I disliked the books when I read them aeons ago because, being targeted at a young adult audience, they failed to go into details regarding the military hardware being used. Or the identity of the invading country... (I assumed it was China).
And they got kind of silly after the third one... the whole premise - they were evacuated and then sent back to perform a secret mission on behalf of the New Zealand military.
Also John Marsden is a creepy-looking bearded middle-aged man writing in first-person perspective as a teenage girl, including her crushes on boys, and first sexual experience. I think he's a paedophile. He looks like one.

I know, right? Go back to Ramsey Street you stupid no-talent harlot!! Not that I have anything against the girl, I'm sure she's quite nice, but I'll stomp on her throat.
To be fair, the movie actually looks like a fairly high-quality production for an Australian picture without any big Hollywood stars. Last one of those we had was Wolf Creek.

In what way? Do you play a corpse? I played a corpse once. A reanimated one in some University film. Everybody else got pale make-up, but they said I didn't need it.

Yeah, all the stuff pertaining to New Zealand's involvement is cringe-inducingly naive. Same goes for the US sitting it out. In fact, none of the geopolitics in the books have any resemblance to the real world. I realise he needed to do it for the plot to be even remotely plausible*, but has he not heard of the ANZUS Treaty at all..? As for the enemy never being named (I pictured Indonesia at the time of reading), it will be interesting to see how they're going to get away with it in the film. DrT is right, too. I read the books in high school, as they were released, but I didn't see Red Dawn until a few years ago, and it is virtually the exact same story. My opinion of the Tomorrow books went way down after that. Chay, as far as vague involvements go, yours is pretty vague. * - "foreign country invades Australia, USA's treaty obligations are called into play, foreign nation gets its ass kicked into next week by the Pacific Fleet" wouldn't make for a very good backdrop to a teen coming-of-age story.

Yeah, all the stuff pertaining to New Zealand's involvement is cringe-inducingly naive. Now I'm sure they'd be happy to send their one helicopter to make some kind of a token effort. Same goes for the US sitting it out. True. Although... if it were China that might be slightly more plausible than it first appears (only slightly)... although more so today since they've buddied up with Russia. it will be interesting to see how they're going to get away with it in the film. They'll be Asian. That much was at least given away in the books because the kid with Asian ancestry was able to pass himself off as an enemy soldier, on account of him "looking like them".

Aww... well. At least you still have your navy. ie: the motorboat with the shotgun-toting bloke in the bow.

It already has. Just quietly is all. Through economics, corporate investments. Military treaties. Bases and other large-scale deployments... They're here. It's the 52nd state. Half an hour's drive from where I live their warships float around like they own the place... which they basically do.

They fear our spiders more than anything else. Even the harmless huntsman sends them into a shrieking fit. Mwuhahahahahaha!
'Course... they have bears and cougars and stuff.

Well, I must be magic, cause I've seen that trailer. As I said, about a month ago. Also, what's with the hate My "Fuck Off" in the other thread was at the crazy photo, not at you, like a "Shup up!" type thing. Friends again?
