So, after 3 years I feel like it's probably time for a change. Especially seeing as 'The Silence of the Clamps' has tainted the Space Pope for me.

I'm pretty sure this is to acceptable standards:

How do I go about actually making it my avatar? Does a mod have to do it?

Best way of getting rid of the white is to have the image you want to keep, cut out on a separate layer, then turn off the layer/background behind it. That should give you the background transparency. Then make sure you save the file using the Save for Web and job's a-good-un.

It faces the right way, it's more-or-less the same as the grab (I had to play with the colours to get some of the background to be more easily removable), and it's Bender's glorious golden head, complete with antenna.
