Haha! Yerah, I haven't quite got the web-lingo down. :-P

If you're using a pc or a laptop, you should be able to use the right button on your mouse ("right click") to pull up a menu that should have an option that says something like save image as... or save image.  Click on that option to save the picture somewhere you can navigate to on your harddrive.

Once you've got that all figured out, I have to tag you off with permissions to use custom avatars, and then you have to go into your profile, select custom avatar, upload the image you saved on your computer earlier, and save changes. 

I'd actually prefer if the part of the arm on the bottom of the cut off side on that image of Grrrl were cut off as well; it implicates that the image is square more so than other cut off points.  I'll probably just do it myself in a little bit I guess.

Danny, that will look rubbish. Mainly due to squareness issues. I haven't tried to make it, but I've been to the future and seen the attempts and my mission is now to stop people from even trying. The time wasted making the avatar needs to be spent masturbating - you know I'm right whoever you might be who would try it.

The background can be cut out, but since the tube is not entirely in the frame, nor the chair or Fry's right hand, the finished article will still scream "SQUARE!"

Also, it would be a lot to fit in to 64x64.

Next time just resize the picture yourself to 64x64 pixels before even asking for them.

Scan took about 2 hours in Gimp. Perhaps brighter colors would have turned out better. Also apparently irfanview doesn't support alpha transparency.

I actually didn't read any of the posts in this thread.  I just saw the picture and thought what the hell, I'll make an avatar or some shit by making a nice a scan of it.  I probably wouldn't have put the effort into it if I'd have known you asked for it, or especially what you were asking for DannyJC13.  I think your current avatar is rather nice.

Furthermore, SoS and Bend-err are completely right: what you're asking for would look like garbage and show that the avatars are just squares, which is something that I'd prefer we don't do, or at the very least as little as possible.

In fact, just making the avatar I did, and not making it a big square, was still somewhat failurish.  A lot of detail is lost at that level because of our 64x64 rule.  Anything more in the image would ruin its ability to look like a quality avatar.

I probably should have gone with a brighter red, orange, and skin tone though to offset the outline... oh well.  It was time better spent than masturbating I suppose.

But perhaps this may make my opinion on the matter a little more concise.

Edit: More specifically, the non-square avatar guideline has been around for a very long time.  It's a design choice, just like the 64x64 rule, and a number of other guidelines.  Having these guidelines in place makes PEEL look less like eye cancer than other places.  That said, square avatars have not been made expressly prohibited, and I look at avatars breaking the guidelines on a case by case basis.  I don't like banning people for breaking the guidelines, but occasionally it seems some people are insistent to give everyone's vision aids.

If Danny really really wants that avatar, he could certainly make it himself and upload it himself.  For several reasons expounded upon by others in this thread, nobody has a great desire to make an avatar out of what he wants, and I only spent the time making what I did because I didn't read the posts before hand and thought that spending 2 hours drawing an image would be fun.

So I mean, that's it in a nutshell.

I came in this thread to ask what the heck TNUK's current avy was and I am a little disappointed at its origin (which reading this thread, I presume was in retaliation to the no-square-avatar-unspoken-rule). I thought perhaps it was a child's drawn version of the Borg cube, or maybe the box for Shrodinger's cat.
