I think you brought this up SoS...but it is interesting to note tht of the 8 posts I made on this page 7 were gray and 1 was white. Kinda opposite of your dilemma there.

BTW I notice a lotof the old avatars, like Dr_T's and SineWave, have the white outline around them. Hm.

It's because they weren't made quite as well.  Furthermore, we can use pngs now, and you can get a much better transparency effect with alpha blending.

Actually spira was somewhat correct... apparently when the discussion of a new format to replace .gif came up, one of the usenet users suggested PING (PING is not GIF), and the name sort of stuck and evolved.  Recursive acronyms are kind of neat.  I also have to add that at first I forgot what PNG stood for and had to look it up myself.  I was like.... woah.... png is recursive!?  The more you learn I guess!

I was going to make myself a new xmas avy, since this old one is kindof ... meh. But instead, for some reason, I made this.

I'm annoyed, I spent a bit of time making the text along a path so it looked nice, but the hat is far too small, so there's no way to scale it down and have it stay readable.


heh. bend-err picked the same picture; I took half an hour and did a quick scan art toonification though.

:edit: after comparing post times, I realise I must've spent at least an hour on that, actually. The f*** is wrong with my priorities.

:Edit2: the tassel was too dinky. In for a penny...

Xmas sucks. But there are good things about it. Turkey, for one. Actually, that's the only one I can think of right now.

Having lost the original high-res version of my avatar (which was made by the illustrious avatar wizard germanfryfan) several laptops ago, I decided to take a stab at making a new one from scratch.

This is the initial attempt, but not happy with it yet. Don't really like the sombrero at this point, but thinking of going a different way from the current one. Something feels out of proportion with Fry, too, but I can't quite put my finger on what...


(I will DEFINITELY have a sombrero, at least for the standard (non-seasonal) version, but just felt like sharing the hatless version)

Usually I prefer thicker lines, but with fry squinting like that, it might be helpful for detail purposes if you made the lines slightly less thick.  Just a little creative criticism I suppose.  You might still angle the hat upward too; I don't think people really wear sombreros like that.

Yeah, the angle on the hat is definitely off, not sure how I feel about the design of it in general either. Was playing with other expressions, as the squint isn't translating that well to the tiny scale needed to accommodate the hat. I might try thinning just the lines around the eyes to see if that helps with the squint, but I don't want them to disappear.

I agree.  At the store I work, we also have numerous "alternative" meat selections for your holiday feast.  People constantly ask me, "What tastes better, the tofu turkey or the Match meat turkey?"  On the inside, I say, "Fuck if I know...I'm sure they both taste like shit."  But then I gather myself and get one of the other workers who is a vagetarian vegetarian/vegan to help them out.  No, I am never going to eat this fake crap for the customer's sake so I can tell them which shit stinks slightly less.

I love Gopher's Xmas av. It is wonderful.

I think if you thin the lines on the eyes in the new one, you should thin them everywhere. They are a little thick, that's the first thing I noticed about it.
