Basically, i just whipped up this sig to help the newbs, as it is pretty big i will only be displaying it when i welcome a newb, what i want to know is :
a) Is it going to help much?
b) If so, what else should i add, change or get rid of

Remember, this is a 10 minute job so its a bit sketchy, and at the moment not much thought has gone into it. And also im essentually still a newb myself, so ive missed something important, i can guarentee it.

Anyway here it is... So Far (Remember it will be smaller when it becomes a sig)

The info Sig for the newbz

I think it's a great idea, in fact I been trying for the last week or so to make something similar. This is what I got, before losing interest.

What are the ranks on this board?

Take a look in this thread.

Are they all the ranks?

No, the list is old and a bit out of date. The other known ranks are:
• 6667 – Spacepope
• 10000 – DOOP Secretary
There might be others, but only [-mArc-] know about those.

What are those stars under my rank?

They’re related to your rank. See how they corrolate here.

So how do I go up in ranks?

The ranks reflect how many posts you’ve made, and nothing more. In other words, participate on the forums and your rank will slowly rise. Just a warning, don’t spam just to rise your post count. It’s rude and annoying, the admins are known to reset peoples postcount to zero if they think you’re spamming.

Spamming? Spam? What’s that?

On messageboards it refers to posts with no real value, ie they don’t contribute to the topic at hand in a constructive way. Sure, a quick off-topic remark and bad pun is appreciated now and then, but posting “mE 2” every time another member have made a post isn’t. Also don’t doublepost, use the edit button instead.

Why was my “hi, I just joined” thread closed?

It’s nothing personal. “Hi, I’m new” threads all evolve into spam-heavens, since there aren’t any real topic to discuss people just post random nonsense. As a result it was descided that all “Hi, I’m new” threads are closed as soon as the first moderator see them. Don’t worry, once you start posting on the forums, people will note you’re new and welcome you to PEEL.

What are moderators? And administrators?

Administrators runs the board and control every aspect of it, from rules over layout to member banning. Getting on the bad side of admins is not desirable. It’s their place, you and I are just guests here. This means their word is final, and if you disagree with their descisions you’re free to leave the board. They also wield the dreaded Bansticktm. The admins are ][-mArc-] and SlimmyCGEF.

Moderators are explained in the PEEL FAQ. Basically they’re helping the admins keep the board clean. They’re the thin line between a wellmanaged board and utter chaos. Get the word straight from the horse’s mouth here. The UberMod’s wield the just as dreaded BanstickLighttm.

One of the moderators just closed 4 of my threads! They hate me! Why?

First of all: they don’t hate you, they’re just doing their job (moderation). The threads were probably closed because
• a) there’s already a thread about that exact topic on the forum.
• b)The topic were against the rules.
• c) The thread were evolving into a spamfest. Or
• d) The threadtopic were stupid.
Once again read about moderation here.

How was I supposed to know there were another thread like that?

Use the search function before making threads. 2 times out of 3 you’ll find another thread about that exact topic.

Why can’t we discuss episode downloading?

Okay, how about other downloads, like games?

No, take your illegal needs elsewhere. There’s plenty of places for that on the Internet. End of discussion!

What are scans?

Scans are a form of fanart, where you trace a framegrab from the show. Some scanartists trace the figures and leaves it at that, others use their skills with PSP, Photoshop or other imageprograms to add shading, backgrounds and other nifty things.

Read about how to make scans here, here and here

I have some fanarts I want to show you, but I don’t know how to post pictures on PEEL.

Even though it’s outdated (since Netfirms doesn’t allow hotlinking on their free plan), this thread is still a good read. Just find another hoster.

Yeah, but I was going for clarity, rather than technicality.

A simply "NO, DON'T DO IT" on the download topic, would carry the point better, than a longwinded explantion about what was okay, what was not and what was borderlining.

OK this is the new improved smaller version, ive cut out a bit, also just as a test in the smaller one ive eliminated the gaps between each section, this is how it will look as a sig, still a bit (lot) too big i reckon. Any suggestions as to what to get rid of... Or *Shudder* Put back in? Or is there any way to make the gap between the sections smaller, but still noticeable? That would be a Godsend

Looks fine, Rage Dump. Although PEEL slang, such as "shipper" and "TOTPD" would've been neat to keep in. Oh well, you can't have everything.

I planned to make a thread about it, hence why it's a bit more elaborate/ranting than your sig-idea (which in hindsight is better for telling new members).

I wrote a bit about UBB coding (I know it's in the linked FAQ bit, but that's not that good):

UBB Code
UBB is what PEEL uses instead of HTML when you make a post. If you want bold, underlined, italic, strikethrough or small text, to post images or links. It's simple to use and here's a list of UBB codes, they get a bit more advanced near the bottom:

Bold
Underlined
Italic
[s]Strikethrough[/s]
[small]Small[/small]
Spoiler text here
your@address.com - This will give an e-mail link
Originally Posted By Poster here:Quoted Text
http://www.yoururl.com - Post a link

[*] - Bullet Point
Use to type in coding without it buggering a page
To use these you can copy and paste them, replacing the bold bits.
You must close the tags [/small] for them to work.
You must not leave spaces such as:
http://www.yoururl.com

If you want to use this, tell me, because it can't be quoted.

And i'd also like to say to whoever sees this thread that if you want to help out, grab that sig and start welcoming :)

The easiest way to do it is to try and edit my post, that way you'll get all of the UBB code with it.

They way to get the [] tags in and have actual working UBB code, without PEEL encoding it is to use:
[ = [
] = ]
When IE loads, it converts that into the [ and ] tags. When you edit the post (Or quote it), the codes get interprited as UBB.

If you want to use the UBB explaination, go here:
http://www.aoug25.dsl.pipex.com/PEEL/faq.txt

Copy the text from that, and post that. If you edit your post, be careful, or you'll have a terrible concoction of UBB coding on your hands.

It comes from the word "relationship". A shipper is a fan who enjoy/live for the romantic aspect of a show. They like seing Fry/Leela's, and to some degree Amy/Kif, relationship develop.

As for how the word came about; I guess it's just another example of slang, since shipper is easier to say and understand than "someone who like mushy and romantic stuff in a show".

Bah, I just have to jump in here about this one thing. "Specialised" is quite correct, actually. It's only in US English that you can't use "ise" for "ize" (although I do think there are some places in the US where it's acceptable, but I digress). In the UK, the birthplace of English, both "ise" and "ize" are quite correct (admittedly it's a "recent" phenomenon).

Hmm... when you play Banimod in Return to Castle Wolfenstein, you can vote new guys as newbies. When that happens, a message appears on their screen that says they are a newbie and gives a web address. When they go to the web address, it gives them all the rules and the code of conduct, plus the command to get rid of the NEWBIE message. Now, if we could just have some sort of thing like that, where annoying newbs could be branded like that by mods, and the only way to get rid of the branding would be to read the rules, or agree to an extra code of conduct.

That would be both great for us and mindboggling for [-mArc-].

The PEELers' FAQ

It's currently on The Fry Hole, as a nice, linkable page. I'm willing to add more to it.

Nice work, aslate! And you used my text (including embarrassing spelling/grammar errors :D).

You should add a few lines under PEEL slang, covering "shipper" (a bit differnet from shippiness) and "TOTPD".

Added the following:
"Shipper"
"TOTPD"
"What's this "Test Thread" I keep hearing about?"

EDIT: Also spell-checked your text :)

I added:
He just said something i find offensive, what do i do?
That combines open-ness of PEEL, wanking, and being offended.

Why is there a spelling error in the title of the 'General Disscussion' section?
Added that, but without the "Shut up".

Added "noob/n00b" to the PEEL Slang section.

Speli only rapes #fc-ers if i remember correctly.

I feel so honoured aslate. As for Speli, I don't think he's that picky... but maybe.

How about something along the lines of checking out old threads before making new ones?
