Thank you Kryten for coming out of retirement.  It's a shame that I retired from doing fanfics.  I've been busy doing original projects and I don't have time to write Futurama fanfics.

Like I said, I blame my lack of cable, not your writing.  And, yes, most of the time, I forgot to put transitions or something indicating the end at the bottoms of the chapters.

I have been enjoying the heck out of Craig Williams' "The Fifth Season" and recommend it to everyone. He has done a great job catching the feel of the series while adding some more serious plot elements.    :)

He has also done a good job of portraying the characters - so much so he reminded me why I hate Quebert so much!!  If you haven't read it, do yourself a favor and check it out!  ;)

I don't know what i think about that fanfic. On one hand it's well written and fairly interesting, on the other hand we know Leela got her hearing back, Angela has the potential to become a Mary Sue if Craig's not careful, and the Amy side story was a little preachy.

The one thing that I really don't like about this story is how Leela is really just a supporting character not so much as a main anymore. And I wish she wasn't.

It was well written, but I must second what Venus and spacedal11 have said.  ME WANT MORE LEELA!

That said, it is certainly not the worst fic on TLZ by any means.

I did have a giggle at the "How to write a shippy Futurama Fanfic" though- great!

Leela is a supporting character (so far) but that doesn't bother me so much. Venus, pardon my ignorance but who or what the heck is Mary Sue????

Mary-sue is a term for a new made up character that is the ideal person. This person has had a bad life but is really nice and is really smart and pretty and all this stuff. Mary-sues aren't wanted in fan fictions.

Thanks Spacedal11! Sorta like a certain female character from an epic fan fic from last year?  ;)

Mary-Sue's are also thinly veiled representations of the author of the story.

Mary Sue's aren't always thinly veiled author insertions, but at least some of the time they are.

Alesia from UoM walked a fine line between being a Mary Sue and not being one but a few times in the story she did have her Mary Sueish moments. But she was supposed to have flaws which is something most Mary Sue's don't have. On a side note, male Mary Sue's are called Gary Stu.

Funny, she doesn't look Sueish.

Seriously though, I agree with both Venus and Teral.  It's probably easier for fanfictionists to superimpose their own conscious/subconscious motivations onto an original character than a canonical character even if they don't say something like "Mary Sue is going to be just like me if I had a Ph.D. in awesomeology," or "I'll change my name to 'Gary Stu' and become Leela's new love interest," or "Jack Havoc is me with a beard and a gun."

Can anyone in the fanfic-know tell me where the name "Mary Sue" came from?

Evidently the term originated in Star Trek fandom where someone published a fanfiction they wrote in some sort of fan magazine and the original character of the fic was named Mary Sue. Somehow or another the term got adopted to describe any original character who was annoyingly perfect at the expense of all off the canon characters.

EDIT: Found a little article piece:

Although storytellers have been rehashing Mary Sue since the dawn of time, she did not receive her current name until the early 1970s. The original was Lieutenant Mary Sue ("the youngest Lieutenant in the fleet -- only fifteen and a half years old" ) as immortalized in Paula Smith's "A Trekkie's Tale," which she wrote and published in her 1974 fanzine Menagerie #2. (According to Katherine Langley: "Paula is still active in fandom and, to be sure, suitably bemused that Mary Sue lives on." )

Yes, it figures that as soon as I had posted that, I decided to look on Wikipedia.  Wouldn't you know it?  They have an entry for "Mary Sue Fanfiction."  I guess I should've guessed they would.  I already knew about their articles on "Stormtrooper effect" and "redshirts*."

Frankly, I had no idea fanfiction had such a long and illustrious history.

* They note that Zapp Brannigan refered to "redshirts," but through the entire run of the show, I can't think of one reference to them.

Just a quick FYI...

Alesia in UoM was actually intentionally supposed to have several Mary-Sue stylings to her in the sense that she tried to be perfect and that Fry sometimes saw her that way, though at the same time was supposed to reflect how the very idea of perfection is absurd and cannot be. I tried to illustrate how even somebody's apparent perfections can be a weakness as well, though whether that got across... dunno... that's for the readers to have decided. However, saying that, if I were to go back and rewrite UoM, there are a few factors here and there that I would definitely change about her. Nothing major, just the odd little things here and there.

Continuing on our Mary Sue topic, i found this comic. It's for a different fandom but it sums things up quite nicely.

I know this is like so old. But I just read the latest chapter for Rye Guy's The Other on TLZ. And though I haven't read all of it and I just barely could remember what the last part was on.

However,

I totally called it.

Posting after a 4 month drought, I would like to say that my favorite fanfic is Krieb's Best of Times and Worst of Times. Here is a preview:

This work is set three years after the final episode, The Devil's Hands are Idol Playthings, with Fry and Leela happily married for two of those years. In this period of time since the final opera scene, despite being happily married, they've had to endure both wonderful and, unfortunately, tragic events. However, it's Leela's 31st birthday, and Fry has organised a special party for her. What Leela yearns for, though, is a present that means more than mere money, which only Fry can give. Will he lighten up their lives with something more treasured than gold?

This fanfic can be found here:  http://www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/fanfic/indexk.shtml#kriebs
I honestly hope no one minds me direct linking..., if so, I'll get rid of it, but yes, it can be found in the fan fiction section of TLZ. This is without a doubt my favorite fan fiction. Please keep in mind that Kriebs is not finished with it yet, but I have been keeping in touch with him through e-mails and he intends to finish it. Real life comes first tho   ;)

Hi WAVer,

That was my question--if Krieb was going to finish. I do like that story, even if it sometimes brushes a little close to "Star Wars" for me.  The scene with Zoidberg I actually found pretty moving.

I still highly recommend Layla's "Fry's Choice" even unfinished.  I'd also try Kif White's "Chronitons of Frynia" since it doesn't seem to get as much press as some of the other good fictions.

I've read some of Layla's "Fry's Choice" already, and also Chronitons of Frynia as well. I just, personally, perfer fanfics that are post-DHAIPT. Know what I mean? I am also a star wars fan too. Go figure lol. But I dont just like Kriebs fanfic because of the Star Wars references, but because of the overall story in general.
