PEELies 2023 - Announcements

Hello, everybody. I have terrible news for you all. Due to it being way too late to do anything about them, the PEELies for 2014-2022 have been cancelled.

Yes. Cancelled. I know it's a shock to all of you - it was certainly a shock to all of me as well. Except the parts that have been paying attention for the last decade, of course.

You read that right - it's been ten years since the PEELies were held, and during that time we've seen many gems worthy of awards being posted and then ignored.

But I also have moderately good news for some of you (not for most of you though, since most of you won't be winning anything due to not being here). There will be a PEELies 2023 right here in this mostly-forgotten and abandoned subforum to which I've somehow obtained the keys.

I'm afraid it'll be me doing this, since the usual crowd of usual suspects have all vanished without a trace. And what's worse, I've learned from the two I ran back in 2011 and 2012. I learned real good.

So, expect more of the same, with less of a few things and more of some others, and some things dropped entirely and some things which are entirely new. And I have a new, secret (so you can't bribe or blackmail them) shadowy council pulling the strings from the... ...uh... ...shadows.

There will be awards, there will probably be a nomination period for some of them, and I'm sure there's a possibility that you hoi polloi, wastrels, unwashed masses, and general peasant-level peons will be allowed to cast a few votes to give you the illusion of choice and bring a veneer of meaning to your otherwise miserable lives.

And there will be surprises.

One or two of those might even be pleasant ones.

Anyhow, there's a little bit of time before things really kick off. I'll open some nominations threads for a handful of awards, and I'll do that soon. But not right away - and the nomination period will probably be short, since I expect that you're all anxious to get to the part where I put up polls and half of you rage about not having been included while the other half endure paroxyms of apoplexy due to your presence on the poll.

And some of you will just be begging outright for an award that you haven't earned.

Assuming that anybody's going to participate, that is. I mean, there's a good chance this will be ignored due to many of the old staples having evaporated during PEEL's last few years of dust-collecting.

You can help though. Spread the word on social media, spam Josh's Discord, and generally pester PEELer pals you've kept in touch with to come back for one last hurrah. One final shindig. One big fucking awards ceremony at the end, and maybe the last-ever PEELie awards (because if nobody really cares this time, there will likely never be another such event).

With upgraded graphics to show that the passage of time has indeed occurred, and with a new set of secret council members muttering in an all-new secret place about how best to go about throwing this bash, this will be one to remember. And possibly one that will be worth updating that one website about (when it comes back).

So now that I have your attention (and hopefully excitement), please feel free to share your thoughts and speculate wildly* about what's to come for the next few days, while I hastily throw something together and whip the council members soundly to rouse them from their decade-long slumber.
*Spam and asshattery will be removed (unless hilarious). Dedicated (secret) minions will be monitoring this thread day and night to report said items to the relevant authorities. The post will be edited to say "I did not read the rules", and whoever ends up with the most of their posts in this thread saying so will be fed to winna banned. You've all been soundly warned. Whoa, Bendersfan1221 still exists. I never thought I'd see your sultry purple-wigged, Pikachu-eared self ever again. Also, I can't spam Josh's Discord if I'm not in it, so joke's on Josh! NERD.

Y'know? Even if this is the last awards ceremony, even if this thread dies on the vine, seeing old friends in here in and of itself is pretty special.

I have an announcement: The announcements thread will now be locked, until further announcements are to be announced. At which point, the announcements thread will be announced to be unlocked, the announcement will be announced, and then the announcements thread may or may not be locked again, which will be announced within the announcements thread.

Nominations will be closing at the beginning of October.

Please, if you have not yet made nominations, click here and make them now.

This is likely to be the last PEEL awards ceremony, since PEEL's activity is dwindling again and will drop to potentially nothing after the latest run of Futurama stops airing. So, take your chance to participate.

I have decided there will be a PEELie for the best post in this whole subforum before everything gets locked. It will be awarded to the person who makes the best post that is cromulent and contributory. Nothing that's a complete non-sequitur.

And obviously, I can't award it to myself. But hopefully this will encourage a slightly higher degree of participation!

Nominations have closed. There will be a short counting and deliberation period, and then polls will be opened.

They'll stay open for a month or so, and then will be closed, locked, and the results will not be revealed. You'll never get to know who comes in second. You'll have to trust me as to who won.

And this is being done this way due to both lessons learned from running the 2011 PEELies, and also because with these awards, some may be contentious. If somebody gets really pissed off at being voted "Worst PEELer" for example, I don't want them pointing constantly at the "second worst" and screaming that that person is clearly worse and obviously should have been the winner. Nor do I want the runners up in something like the "Best PEELer" poll to feel like with a huge gap between them and the actual winner, they are somehow unbeloved by this collection of weird nerds.

And it's again thanks to lessons learned from the 2011 PEELies that I'm saying this in advance. If you have complaints or weird conspiracy theories about this, feel free to voice them in the General Discussion thread for this subforum here. Or in the final thoughts thread once that's open.

I probably won't read them, and am very unlikely to respond to them, but you'll at least have the chance that other people might agree with you, voice support for your position, and then also be ignored.

Anyhow, once the polls have closed, the threads will remain open, the awards will be given, you'll be able to comment, and there will also be a master awards ceremony thread which will be locked, but a great place to collect all of the awards speeches and trophies.

We're just past the halfway point of the voting stage, and turnout so far has been low, but that's not unexpected.

Polls will be locked at the end of October. Winners will be announced in early November. Those of you who purchased PEEL Ultimate™ will receive your invitation to the Denmark leg of the international afterparty by drone delivery shortly after that.

Members who have access to the R-Rated forum will also receive their invitations to their own special awards ceremony and afterparty around the same time.

There's a week left before this thing closes down and then there's going to be a brief interlude before awards are handed out.

So, this is your one week warning. Get your thoughts typed out, your votes cast, and get ready to applaud the winners.

I guess this would be a good time to unlock this thread, just in case anybody has anything they want to say here over the course of this week.

The winners will be announced shortly, and a Master Thread for awards will be opened and used to showcase all of the awards without any of the tedious commentary from the peanut gallery (not that anybody is posting here. The place has gone back to being mostly dead. I blame winna).
