Consider this the test thread of the PEELies 2023 subforum. Don't feel like you're allowed to post egregious spam, don't feel like you need to say anything here, and don't lick the walls, the paint is still wet.

But if you've got stuff to say that's more along the lines of suggestion than speculation, or if you have questions*, you could air those here. If you felt like doing so, and recognized it would be a poor use of your time but wanted to do it anyway.

This wasn't on my 2023 bingo card, but a very pleasant surprise for sure! Hopefully there's enough interest to make it worthwhile.

I often tell people that in 2012, some people on the internet collectively voted on me being a smelly gamer that never showers. It's the highest honour!

If you look carefully, you'll actually see I've regularly posted every single day on this forum for the last 10 years.

I said you have to look carefully. Don't hurt yourself.

Apologies for the double-post, but I feel this needs to be clarified.

Are the 2023 PEELies only covering 2023, or are we also making up for the decade we missed since the last one? If the former, "Best Off-Topic Thread", for instance, has very few options. In fact, I believe zappdingbat would win by default since this was the only thread made in 2023 that I could find.

Similarly, during the 2023 window, Svip is the only admin and Tweek is the only moderator (aside from Xanfor's cameo appearance). Although perhaps I'm overthinking things and that's the joke.

The 2023 PEELies are intended to cover 2023, and there have been far more than a single thread active in 2023.

Similarly, we have more than one admin this year, even if only one of them is active, and we have more than one moderator even if only one moderator has been posting regularly.

We can therefore fill up the options on a poll for each of the categories, as long as people remember to nominate, and there should be poll winners as long as people remember to vote.

As with everything else around here, it'll be fine once people start participating and if they don't participate in sufficient volume I'm just going to start making shit up to fill in the gaps.

Point of clarification: Three nominations per category is the max, but not the requirement, yes? In putting together my off-topic nominations I struggled to name three items for every category, and I suspect I'll run into this issue in even more pronounced fashion for my on-topic nominations.

You can make as few nominations as you like, and three would be a good number to stop at, but if your heart moves you to make four, or five, I won't release the hounds.

Not that I'm complaining--I agree that seeing the opportunity appear at all was a nice surprise--but out of curiosity, why is this PEELies process starting now, rather than closer to the end of 2023/start of 2024? Is it just an expectation that activity will have already waned by then?

If you don't cast lots of nominations, you aren't allowed to get a feel for anything. Now, go nominate!

October/November is the traditional time as far as I'm concerned, and leads nicely into the awards appearing in December and the rest of that month being an opportunity for people to leave comments on the affair.

And yes, activity is likely to drop soon so taking advantage of the new episodes airing was a somewhat deliberate thing.

Speaking of which, when it comes time to vote, will you be accepting votes from people for categories to which they gave no nominations?

I'm not actually going to open polls if we dont have a goodly quantity of nominations. I'm going to lock these threads, get myself banned, and leave you all in suspense forever.

That would be an extremely lazy way to nominate, but yes. You may simply concur with the nominations of another, if you so wish.

PEELies news:

Nominations will be closing at the beginning of October.

Please, if you have not yet made nominations, click here and make them now.

This is likely to be the last PEEL awards ceremony, since PEEL's activity is dwindling again and will drop to potentially nothing after the latest run of Futurama stops airing. So, take your chance to participate.

Unless I get lazy and don't actually close the nomination threads until Tuesday or something, this is your last shot at getting nominations in.

Just over halfway through the voting phase, winners for many polls are emerging as likely and we have a few polls that are in desperate need of more votes to break potential ties.

Please, if there's a poll you haven't voted in yet, go cast your ballots now. It's important, you can make a difference, and also it'll make you feel like you participated hard. Like you gave it your all. Don't do it just because I'm asking you and you adore me, also do it for the sake of your daily dopamine hit!

Hey all- we've decided that we want to keep discussion and congratulations related to specific awards in their respective poll threads. So please post there if you want to offer congratulations/condolences, or if you wish to threaten tnuc and I with physical violence for not awarding you something.

OK, no whipped-cream pie fights today. Feather dusters at 15 paces. First to laugh loses!

Voting in all of the off-topic polls isn't something I could have done in good conscience, given that I haven't watched beyond the first new episode, but I'm marginally confident that I participated in the remainder.

Thank you so much, tnuc, for being the mastermind of the PEELies this year. Also, thanks to those of you who actually voted! We know that the number of regulars around here is a lot smaller than it used to be, but we really appreciate the participation we did get.

Mastermind? Me? I am but a humble instrument.

Not too humble though. Mass spectrometer level rather than pH meter.

Thank you Caffienated One for being the person who made this happen, and allowing me to play a part. Thank you Svip, for enabling our collective madness, thank you to all of the secret council members who contributed but will never be recognized for it. And thank you everybody who voted.

I hope that this wasn't the last PEELies, but it certainly seems like if it was, it's not a bad final curtain call for this particular PEELstitution to take.

I think that all things considered, it went decently. And if the board ever really picks up again, I think that future iterations of this event could very well be the best that the PEELies has ever been.

Thank you all. It was a pleasure to do the work, not quite as much of a pleasure to do the bidding of the council (seriously, I don't know why having pictures of my feet were "essential" for so many of them), and it's been even more of a pleasure to write the speeches for the awards and take the photographs of the afterparty for PEEL Ultimate subscribers, then post them to the R-Rated forum.

I wrote some kudos in the test thread but an extra sprinkling sparkling of appreciation likely shouldn't hurt. Too much. Thanks, tnuc and cBot :) And the PEELies likely inspired additional activity from the folks who rarely traveled these parts in recent years, too.

Cheers to these and to many more. Off we head, into the future!

I have decided there will be a PEELie for the best post in this whole subforum before everything gets locked. It will be awarded to the person who makes the best post that is cromulent and contributory. Nothing that's a complete non-sequitur.

Hang on, what happened to this one?

It didn't have the galvanizing effect on activity I had hoped it might,  so it was forgotten. So, uh, feel free to present it to whomever you would like to.

Everybody, Tedward is presenting the FINAL PEELie of 2023. Pay attention to him, and not the slightly-tired-looking middle-aged British lady sneaking out of the back door!

I just wasted a few minutes trying to find a one-word shitpost to nominate ironically, but couldn't find anything that fits the bill. I guess you're all too amazing. I have no true authority here (and I mean literally zero), but I declare

Well, UrL, you do have the [zero] authority that was bestowed upon you when you were declared PotM earlier this year by the [also zero?] authority of winna, so there's that! However, much as I would love to have inexplicably wound up with two special PEELies this year through no effort of my own, I must pass this one on to a better option.

Let's see...an honorable mention goes to tnuc for having come up with unique ways to announce the closing of each one of the poll threads, of which my favorite was probably from Shippiest Shipper:

Quote from: transgender nerd under canada
Alas, the poll was struck by a runaway ship and has died. Stay tuned for the poll results, which will be available once I find a set of poll-bearers to carry the casket at the funeral.

However, although this would already have been covered by zappdingbat having won the Best Nominations PEELie, I must single out this particular nomination he made as being my selection for the winner:
