Fry Region: #1 Philip J. Fry vs #8 Al Gore

In the Fry Region Quarterfinals, we have the eponymous Philip J. Fry versus Al Gore. Fry's coming off of stompings of Michelle and Morris, while Gore easily beat Umbriel and slide past HGB. Who'll win this round and get to the Regional Semifinals? Discuss now and the poll will open at midnight tonight!

Either Gore or Hawking is the best guest star the show has had, but neither holds a candle to Fry (who I would guess is going to win this thing, but perhaps not?)

Definitely Fry, what with him being a main character against a guest star.

It'll be interesting to see how many (if any) votes Al Gore will get. There can't be too many people who hate Fry enough to vote against him, can there?

I think it is unfair to say 'he is a main character, let him win!' rather than debating the characters on their merits.  Because for that money, we are going to end up with a predictable and boring result.

I choose Fry because I think his character is a lot more funny and interesting than Al Gore's.  That is not to say Al Gore is a bad character, but his persona is not up to snuffs.

The whole voting against a main character ordeal seems stupid to me.  If you don't like Leela, then vote for the other one.  It doesn't matter if she is a main character or not.

I had actually hoped Washbucket won his battle against URL, because Washbucket, while with a lot less screen time, is infinitive more hilarious than URL in the ultimate time they both spend on screen.  But URL purely won for having 'more time on screen'.

Yeah, that's real creative, people.

A few people are just contrary by nature, or perhaps bored by a landslide.

I am, too, but I'll be voting for Fry this time.  Because he's the better character.  Though I have voted for some out of sentimental reasons.

Yes, Fry is a main character and yes, he is the driving force after the whole show, but especially some Season 6 episodes he has been a bit too stupid for my liking, though he surely did well for the final again.

Al Gore on the other hand was great every time he was on the show, and for a real life politician who has no problem making fun of himself and his own agenda that surely counts double.


And while I know Fry will easily win this round and I'd normally vote for him here too, I think I'll be going with Al Gore, just to not have him get eliminated in a landslide.

Fry is my second favorite character (behind the oh-so-hated Leela), and though I agree that he has had his fair share of unbearable moments in the new run, I still thoroughly enjoy him. Al Gore has been one of the show's best repeat guest stars, but he's not really a character.

I cannot agree with you more, Svip. Saying somebody is a main character and thus deserves to win is not an argument at all. It's like when Ralph says he is right about everything in the politics thread just because he's older. We're trying to find the best character, not the one who's appeared in the most episodes.

Fry, no question for me there.
Far more appearances, far more "consistently entertaining" work by that character than by Gore.

I'm not a big fan of Al Gore in the show.

It was novel at first because he's quite a big figure for a cartoon to have doing a voice and everything. And you know, he really went for it.

But the fact of the matter is that, going for it or not, he's not an actor. His delivery is never as perfect as it is from the characters played by actors. It's not as bad as some guest stars, but it can be flat at times.

And it often leads to really crow-barred "Hey guys, look we have Al Gore on the show!" and "WOO ENVIORNMENT" jokes that bug me. Not that I have a problem with the enviornment or anything.

Fry on the other hand is a brilliant character. Plenty of depth, heart and humour to be found there.

I didn't vote for him just because he's a main character, I voted for him because he's a main character against Al Gore who, as Gorky said, isn't technically a character.

Even if Al Gore wasn't just a guest star, I would have voted for Fry anyway, because I like his character better (which makes sense because he's the main character and we're supposed to like him).

Fine, Al Gore isn't technically much of a character compared to Fry whom we've seen in every episode and has grown and evolved over the course of the show far more than Al Gore.

I like Gore and I like the jokes that have been made around him. But he's not mach for the complexity, authenticity, and hilarity that is Fry.
