To everybody who has family members with problems:

If you love them, if you do for them what you can whilst not impairing your ability to run your own life, if you make sure that they know you are there when they need you, and if you make sure that you only take the course of action regarding their future that intersects directly with their best interests, you are doing everything right, and anything unfortunate that does occur is not your fault. Family members are generally manipulative, so don't let that get to you.

Family members can be reliant, greedy, selfish little bastards. Don't let it jade you.

Family members can also be all you have. They're worth taking care of (usually), if only so that you're not alone in dealing with the various problems the universe doles out to you. Don't let it bring you down.

Of course, all that said, if they're causing you problems you're unable to cope with, then it's OK to back away. Sometimes self-destructive tendancies need to be played through, seen out to the point where the one destroying themselves knows that their ruination lies just around the corner. In a dark place like that, unfortunately, is where some people need to be in order to come around and accept the love and support of their families. Just don't let them get round the corner. They might try, but they can't be allowed to go there.

It is true that sometimes in order to come out of a bad place, you need to sink as far as possible. Sometimes it's only when you've reached bedrock that you are in a stable enough position to tunnel out of the shitpile that you're sinking into.

Self-destructive tendancies tend to get worse once people are in over a certain depth, tend to be recognisable to the self-destructive individual once they're at the bottom, and tend to be easier to resist, to push against from the bottom. So have faith in these people. Have faith that should rock-bottom be reached, maybe they'll have the strength to push upwards, to climb back to level and solid ground. To be a real person again, and to be there for you in turn, should you ever begin to sink into the morass that lies just below the surface of our modern and increasingly complicated lives.

To everyone else:
If you know somebody who has a family member with some form of problem that affects the daily life of said friend, then ask what you can do to help. It'll be appreciated more than you'll ever know, even if there is nothing you can do.

The PEELocalypse will be heralded by the posting of the four Awesmen: iliketowaralot, Famindisguise, Impestilence and Gocad.

The ground will shake, the sky will turn a pleasant shade of blue and the SlimmiChrist will return to wage a 7-year battle against the server that refused to serve him. With the Ontopic posters Raptured into the loving embrace of the real world, all Offtopic PEELers will be left behind to fight the endless stream of trolls that result from under-moderation.

Imagine a page refreshing and revealing the Classic Episode to be Raging Bender... Forever.
I just loved "and Gocad" and Raging Bender's triumphant return.

Guess I'm right.  Just saw the video on thew Comedy Central website of Law and Oracle where Fry and URL were chasing a guy a'la Tron.  Looks like Fry really is the only character in that episode.  No sign of Leela, Bender, or anyone else.

Yeah, and Clamps and Zoidberg are the only characters in The Silence of the Clamps.

Oh, wait.
I still have no idea whether KurtPikachu was serious or trolling...

That's really not a fair assessment

It was really. Just one not steeped in sentiment or convenient half-truths-for-the-sake-of-pointless-politeness.

Quote
I'm not suggesting that you don't have a right to your opinion or that your opinion is unfounded

That is, in fact, exactly what you were suggesting when you said the assessment was "not fair". So you just contradicted yourself. Never a good sign. If indeed you thought the opinion was founded, as opposed to unfounded, then you would have said nothing. But you did say something, so despite pretending otherwise, this IS what you're suggesting. Correct? Just want to be clear.

Quote
life actually is a lot more complicated for people

No it most certainly is not. It is abundantly simple. Black and white. It can be summed-up in a single sentence: Don't do stupid things.
This only appears complicated to the abysmally stupid, but they don't really count as being completely... well... human. Not in my book anyway. Something more like a Chimpanzee or a Bonobo. A Hominid, certainly. In the same evolutionary family as our noble selves, but not strictly part of the linguistically-gifted tool-making Homo-sapiens club.
Life IS certainly complicated for an intellectually-challenged monkey-type creature trying to pretend that it's a human, sure. That is where things get sticky. On the plus side, since stupid people aren't technically human, then there is no moral issue with being completely blunt with them even to the point of soul-shattering, since (if such a thing even exists) only real humans HAVE souls anyway.

Quote
many of us have real moral issues with abortions.

Again, as I said - abysmally stupid.

Maz makes a good point. Certainly a rant-worthy one (it's the rant thread) that she specifically indicated to be directed at society at large. Why are the poor shooting out children at such a prodigious rate? Why hasn't one of them figured out that all they're doing is playing into the hands of the autocratic aristocracy that lauds it over them by continuing to spread their means too thin and idiotically perpetuate their cycle of poverty? Oh yes, it's wonderful, it's beautiful, it's magical - another poor kid growing up with sub-standard education and virtually no hope of ever pulling him/herself out of it. People this stupid deserve to be... cleansed.

And besides... What is this ultimately pointless compulsion to reproduce? We all know it to be an evolutionary manifestation of nothing more spiritual or meaningful than DNA replication. Replicate, replicate, replicate. We are nothing but a chemical reaction that's been bubbling away for four billion years and has now taken the form of six-billion walking piles of organic sludge that are pointlessly continuing the endless process toward absolutely no ultimate goal... and yet these "people" still willingly participate?

Why?
I should think that one, regardless of wealth or intelligence, would be offended by having been so horribly manipulated by one's own genetic code. One ought to be offended, and to do everything possible to thwart DNA's cold design. Instead they embrace it like the servile fools they are. This, by the way, is the same cheerful organic molecule that bestows the wonderful gifts of old-age and decrepitude. What a great thing.

I, for one, am in favour of abolishing DNA altogether and embracing technological posthumanism. But I have digressed. I do this after having not slept for 48-hours.

Quote
speeding isn't stupid... it's something you do when you drive a car

Actually, speeding is a stupid thing one does when driving a car. There is a speedometer, after all. And a man with a liking for speed might well weigh his options and decide the risk is well worth it, unless he happened to have a job which required him to have a licence, and a dependent and infant to look after at home. If that happened to be the case then it goes from being good fun or inattentiveness to being flagrantly selfish and moronic. I say this as a man who's lost his licence twice - no dependents at the time.

Maz used to scold me for starting fights on here. Now she has done so.
You know what this means, of course.

All bets are off.

I don't know much about this FuturamaFF site, but apparently a lot of their members were saying bad things about PEEL recently.  I don't know why they don't like us or what they do on their website, and I'm not too interested because I like it here on PEEL.  However, someone showed me this, and I'd like to share it because this person was very rational and nice about listening to what I'm guessing was Josh's arguments about being banned there.  I really appreciate fairness, so here goes:

Quote from: Unmentionable
I wrote a post on PEEL in that thread EP posted. I'm gonna defend this site. They say they were banned for having an opinion.

Probably getting a nom from me in the next POTM.  He signed up for PEEL recently... so I think this is a valid submission. :)

You're not addicted to smoking. :)

Your smoking habit is providing very minimal damage to your health and to your wallet.  If you enjoy it in this fashion (even after you're done exercising) I don't foresee any problems being associated with it.

As a warning though.... (assuming you don't want to become seriously addicted, and would like to continue the way it is): do not smoke/chain-smoke when you are very stressed; try not to smoke successive days in a row; if you're getting up to a half a pack in a regular interval, attempt to cut back as this the point of no return.

Lastly... the three day chain smoke drink a thon is absolutely fine.  Smoking cigarettes while getting drunk negates the cigarette smoking as far as addiction is concerned. :)

Oh, winna...

I wouldn't personally say that any religion is retarded. Even if you believe deeply that there's a superintelligent shade of the colour blue who lives in your sock drawer, created the universe from a fart seventeen thousand years ago, made mankind from a rock that he carved with his toenails, and shaped mankind for the purpose of having somebdoy create dick jokes for him to laugh at, you've surely got your reasons.

Of course, if you believe it after examining certain pieces of that and finding them to be provably false, that could be classified as retarded. A sensible approach would be to revise your doctrine at that point.

Y'see, religion might have been responsible for wars and intolerance and a lot of hatred over the centuries, but it's always been based around a central idea - the idea of understanding why.

When the vikings saw lightning strike the ground, they devised whaty was to them a perfectly reasonable explanation. The magic guy who lives in the clouds was angry, and he was throwing bolts of supercharged magic at the Earth. It's not exactly science, but it's more than making shit up for no reason. It's an explanation of events that have been observed. Religion grew out of this mindset as much as anything else. Fast forward to the beginnings of the modern Church, and you've got a bunch of monks who guard the knowledge of generations, starting to realise that there's a bunch of stuff they don't know, so they'd better make stuff up to fill in the gaps. Fast forward some more, and some of these monks start to think about actually looking deeper into what they don't know. Gregor Johan Mendel was one such monk. He decided to turn his patch of the abbey's garden into what was at the time a sophisticated scientific research facility, and discovered the science of genetics. Of course, the ability to put up a greenhouse and interpret data were quickly surpassed by the abilities to put up universities and feed data into computers, but that's not the point. The point is that many of the first scientists were deeply religious men who sought answers. Had any of them come across something that screamed out to them that their God did not exist, they were the kind of men (educated in religious institutions and funded by the Church in many cases) who would have announced this - and announced it loudly.

Galileo was persecuted by the Church for the heresy of saying that the Earth went round the sun rather than being the centre of the universe. Now, there was nothing in the Bible to say that the Earth was the centre of the universe. It was one of those things made up to fill in a gap. Galileo was still a religious man, but he'd seen the evidence that the Church of the time was wrong about something. Rather than say "religion is retarded" Galileo suggested that perhaps there was an error in the way the Church had arrived at this conclusion.

It's not that religion is retarded, Danny. It's that there are powerful people in control of organised religion who have direct stakes in saying whether something is true or false, and who seek to protect their own vested interests above the advancement of human knowledge.

Personally, I believe that God would want us to question the framework that we have in place for our decisions, rather than to arbitrarily say that a particular decision makes no sense. Look at the universe around you. Not at the Bible. Not at the Church. Not at what Man says about God. Look at the entirity of existance, and if you can find a single shred of evidence - a particle of potential proof that says God does not exist, then you can start to call religion retarded.

You may find it interesting to note that Darwin, Galileo, Einstein, Newton, andf many other well-educated men considered the fathers, grandfathers and great men of science were all Christians and believed in a God who was not incompatible with their scientific beliefs. Are you willing to stand up in front of PEEL and claim that most of their personal heroes were retarded? Can you really with your hand on your heart state that you believe Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein to have been retarded?

Take a look at the universe. Decide slowly. It may take you your entire lifetime.
