They look like they're about to make out.

Also, wtf is up with Leela's armpit?  C'mon animators, you can do better than that.  no no

Those outfits look at bit too "pinky-tame" for a supposedly agressive sports.

I do assume the "I don’t know the rules of Butterfly Derby, but judging by this new still from the episode, I’m guessing it’s sort of a cross between curling and chess." is meant in an ironic way for a sports that seems to resemble "Roller Derby".

Or did anyone find another still that shows a chess-board-like playfield, or curling like activities?

Well...for a Leela-centred episode, that's more than good enough tongue

Yeah, it's probably just a joke because I don't see how one could come to that literal conclusion from this image and I haven't seen any others to suggest otherwise.

Well, yesterday we've got the plot description:
Quote
"Word around the campfire is, the episode finds Amy and Leela becoming addicted to "Nectar", a nutritional supplement that boosts their performance in the future sport of Butterfly Derby."
There may be some lesbian nasty side effects, you know smile.

Here is a nice interview with Matt Groening.

"I guess what's different this summer is Fry and Leela's relationship is progressing, and people who care about that will be delighted"...

Don't want to sound negative, but just cannot resist that one:

Quote
"I guess what's different this summer is Fry and Leela's relationship is progressing, and people who care about that will be delighted,"

Translation:
"We used to put them 95% together before undoing it. But this summer, it will be different. We will put them together 97% before undoing it...isn't that great" big grin

(Na, to get serious: Do not wish to sound negative, but Groening calls himself a satirist, so he just has to be ridiculed himself from time to time big grin )

"We have a disturbing episode in which Zapp Brannigan starts dating Leela's mother. It inspired the animators to do a scene with Leela trying to seduce Zapp that will get a certain demographic hot under the collar."
Yep, it already made some people (including me) hot under the collar big grin.

Neat article.  They certainly like to toy with that certain demographic, that's for sure!  However, I am sure they are smart enough to know that alienating a very vocal group like that is not a smart business move.

@ Inquisitor Hein:  You said you don't want to sound negative twice...  are you sure?  tongue

That article really contained some juicy bits!

"We have a disturbing episode in which Zapp Brannigan starts dating Leela's mother. It inspired the animators to do a scene with Leela trying to seduce Zapp that will get a certain demographic hot under the collar."

"I guess what's different this summer is Fry and Leela's relationship is progressing, and people who care about that will be delighted,"

"We chop more body parts off in this season -- maybe as much as ever," he says. "So yeah, we haven't lost that."

I think Matt was talking about "The Six Million Dollar Mon" episode, which is written by Ken Keeler. The best Futurama writer in my opinion. smile

I'm guessing Butterfly Derby is some sort of erotic wrestling organised by lesbian performing arts students who watch too much My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

I'm trying to get over Leela's armpit, but it's proving difficult. Leela is 30, not 50. And with the beauty procedures available in the future there is no excuse for such grotesque armpits.

I think it's just a small animation error. She's probably flapping her arms, too, so there's movement there.

Yeah, wasn't going to allow a dead thread to stagger around for 3 weeks past its expiration date for the sake of sentimentality. That way lies madness. And zombies. And PEEL crashes. And old potato salad.

In that case, they're both probably in mid-blink, so nobody get their hopes up for Martian-on-mutant action.

They have played up the homoeroticism in that picture for all it's worth.  They're probably just blinking, but the way the image is, makes it appear as if they are gazing at each other with barely disguised lesbian lust.

Leela looks very muscular, must be the affects of Nectar.

Anyone else predicting a bedroom/sex scene where Leela accidently hurts Fry due to her strength? laff

Hm...for some reason, I think some "Strong arms of the Ma" remake (or at least incorporated/recycled elements) might be possible...
