So apparently this user managed to register a new user.  So I looked into it, and technically we hadn't blocked new registrations, it was more that the templates were broken.  I am not sure what alternative ways there are to register a user through SMF, but this user found a way.

So instead, I decided to fix the templates for the registration process, and so now you can register again.

We'll see what happens.

I still used the regular registration process; it was just a much more difficult task full of deduction, guesswork, the Internet Archive, knowledge of PHP and HTTP, and the source code of SMF 2.0.17.
But huzzah, no-one else needs to go through the same process!

Yeah, it's tough to filter out bots whilst trying to be accommodating to less technical folks. Without having a person spend hours each week to do manual selection. Good luck, and welcome aboard, vivivi! Have you lurked for years or are you just now discovering Peel?

I just created a user to verify that the registration flow worked (it didn't, so I actually had to fix it).  So don't get too excited about this new user.  It's just me, but it also affords me an opportunity to see how the forums look when a user doesn't have admin powers.

I'm fully in favour of this. This is one of the last shining relics of "old internet" before everything spoiled and it's nice to see it begin to thrive again.

And hell... Futurama could be on the air for years now... it's good to have somewhere a bit more robust than Reddit to discuss it.

Well, my fears about bots flooding through the gates have been squarely dashed.  Sometimes it's good to be wrong.

My recent familiarisation with both SMF and the PEEL theme in particular is also allowing me to move forward in a quicker fashion.  I feel like PEEL is now stable enough to permit new members, without me worrying too much.  There are still a few bugs, but they feel minor.

I will make a proper announcement once we get closer, but just giving you a heads up for now, I will be taking the server down for maintenance on Wednesday.  Hopefully, it should only be like 15 minutes.

It might not be necessary yet, since we're not exactly busy, but do you think new moderators would be a good idea? Tweek is the only one with recent activity.

I wish those guys would make a surprise appearance. They're as much a part of the proverbial portrait as the rest of us. I always had a particular fondness and respect for Xanfor...

It'll be super weird to see new mods if we end up with any. It's not a bad idea to ponder over such things though.

And I reckon you're underselling yourself since humans are supposed to be more-or-less like pork. Just maybe a little longer.
