Awesome work, love how you used flat colors and contrasted them for texture and volume   ...

Excellent as usual TV, the paths tool in photoshop drives me insane, you've got some great results out of it.

There's something different and extremely cool about the shading in that picture, it looks great how you didn't use many gradients, and built up the highlights with different layers of colour.

Thank you for all the great comments!

Okay, something new I'm going to try..

Basically the sketch of my idea (Usually changes quite a bit).
Sketched in Photoshop CS with a 3 pixel hard brush, set at 75% opacity (1% spacing!) for the rough shadows I used a 25px hard brush and set the layer opacity to about 40%.
Don't ask why it's in orange, because I don't know. I just prefer to draw in orange or blue rather than black. But everyone has their own preference.
And yes, Fry is poking his navel.

The next time post I will hopefully have gotten further on with the picture.. Who knows someone might find this informative (maybe interesting!). When the picture is finished, I might make some kind of walkthrough which includes various programs and tool settings I use.

How gorgeous! o.o I assume you used a tablet for that. The orange colour makes it looks very pretty and pro-like. The characters are spot on, I especially like your Leela--although she seems a bit alarmed, doesn't she?

And a step-by-step walkthrough would definitely be great to see. Also, looking forward to the final product.

Dear Tom, you may call that a sketch, other people out there may call it artwork.

Anyhow, it's good to see that even the experts start to create their artworks with basic sketches like other mortals, too.  :D

Can't wait for the sketch turning into a colourful artwork.  :)

A work-in-progress drawing with notes and pointers from the best fanartist around?

Hell yeah!

This is going to be great, and really helpful to nearly every artist on this board. Its looking good so far, I can't believe you do the initial sketching using a tablet, are there any benefits to doing it that way rather than sketching it out on paper?
EDIT: *goes off and tries something similar*

The result? "Seductive Leela"
It was a little bit weird using a tablet, I normally rotate the page a lot while drawing, so there were some awkward hand movements going on. I guess its better for correcting mistakes, and building up the sketch with a low opacity brush.
I envy your sheer awesomeness at sketching the characters accurately, it takes me ages to get them looking right, and then sometimes I look at the drawing a week later and hate it.

I second what everyone else just said!

Seriously, this picture's only been up a few hours and everything I was going to say has already been said by someone else... Even your skecthes are incredible. Bender's eyes look a little strange, but other than that, it's completely spot-on. Really looking forward to the final work.  :)

That looks great TV! The characters are in character and look great. A sketch? Nah, that worthy of being tatooed on a fat man as is. Keep up the good work, and can't wait to see the finished version. Second everything else everybody has said!

I'm looking forward to your walk-though, Tom.  I'm interested to see how you work step by step.
This is spot on Greoning style, just so you know.  Leela looks like she has fleas...  in a good way!

It's down to personal preference. I prefer drawing with the tablet (Although I'm going to contradict myself in a moment) it makes it much easier to modify, for instance, I can move around parts like an arm if I don't like it, scale it, rotate it.. delete it. Unlike paper. It does take some getting use to though, it's like learning to draw again, almost.

Cool, I wouldn't worry to much about the characters design, as you practice you kind of 'tighten' up the designs. Which helps for when you try and draw a new character as-well.

Okay, I didn't get much done because I've had loads of college work to do, I was hoping to have the whole thing finished this weekend, but my sub conscious obviously has other plans. Which is bad because on Monday I'm off to Barcelona for 2 weeks.

Click to make bigger!

I decided to go with a different style, so I redrew the pic on paper and scanned it in, I left the sketchy stuff behind it because I thought it looked cool.. or something. Done on basic A4 size paper with a 2B pencil (Down with hard lead!) I scanned it in Grayscale at 300dpi. Coloured it orange using 'Hue & Saturation' in Photoshop. And set it to 'Multiply' on the layer options, saved it as a .psd and chucked it in Painter 9.
Once in Painter I use a custom brush (Pic!) with Acrylic, Then I made a layer underneath the lineart and started to paint in rough blocks of colour, just to get an idea of light sources. Very important! Everything has two or more light sources so put them in (unless it's like a torch on someone's face in the dark or something..) it's what makes shading and painting look more realistic. If your going for realism that it.
And that's about as far as I've got.. yes I'm slow..

Wow, TV, that's a breathtakingly great picture! The hand-drawn version looks just like the sketch. And as a less experienced artist I find the information in your little walkthrough very useful. Have a great time in Barcelona, by the way  :)

I should really do some of the work on my own pieces using Painter as well, but I get lazy.

Well, Barcelona is a fucking awesome place, I wish I was still there..

Here's the bigger version of my new avy (When it gets uploaded)
I drew it while I was sat outside the Sagrada Familia, waiting for my friends who were going up the towers. (I was to scared of the height   :nono: )

This is the speed painted version, click the image for the pencil one.

And now for something bizarre, but also Futurama related:

I drew it this morning.. I have no idea what was going on inside my head at that moment. I think it's got something to do with leela dancing to benders music.. and bender is really huge.. I'm gonna try and finish it one day, Leela came out quite good though.

Nice pic there Tom. But let me say you are a fool for not going up the Sagrada Familia, you get a great view of the city and you get to see parts of the Cathedral that you would not usually see.

Did you visit Gaudi's park adn the Dali museum?

oh and congrats on winning another Peelie
