I've been watching a lot of early TNG episodes lately.  The first two seasons almost seem like a different show from the later seasons.  A lot of the episodes attempt to ape the style of TOS, to varying degrees of success.  There are a lot of Wesley heavy episodes as well.

I very much prefer the later seasons, but I stand by what I've said before: there are a few gems scattered throughout the first two seasons that are still worth watching.

I'm firm in my belief that Home Soil from Season 2 is genuine hard sci-fi, an almost complete rarity in the Star Trek universe.

TNG is uneven, but if you look at the symphony of its last episode, you realize that episode only exists because of the combined effect of all the episodes that preceded it. The fully realized characters, and their relationships, and the universe they lived in, both moral and physical. Picard Season 3, especially its last two episodes, feels very much like an epilogue to that episode.

Star Trek Picard: Season 3

It is, for me at least, the true ending to the TNG series - 7 seasons, 4 movies, and 1 epilogue.

Help a poor confused tribble out: does "Picard Season 3" = "Picard The Final Season"? I went to put S3 on my wish list, but it's unavailable outside of a couple of listings on ebay. Wikipedia/Wikimedia did not enlighten me.

Though I figuratively threw S2 into a back closet, now that I've finally realized that cable is just Soma for boomers and dumped it completely I expect that I'll give S2 another go, perhaps while inebriated to a significant degree.

This show/season:

Edit: I didn't watch too much of season 1 or 2 of Picard; I was turned off by the violence (and degradation of the Federation) in the first episode of season 1. I should watch it at some point, though.

I looked at that link earlier. When I search everywhere for "Picard - Season 3" it's listed but completely out of stock, but "Picard - The Final Season" is being sold on Amazon and Best Buy (online), at least.

Is it just an item title issue? Are there differences between the discs? As far as I can tell, there are three and only three seasons total.

I would guess it's just a marketing thing. Season 3 is (by all accounts) the final season of the show. The proof would be in the episode listing, if it's available.

I think that I must have missed that one this time around, but I did watch "Evolution" which has a similar plot, except that it involves Wesley accidentally creating intelligent life as part of a science project.

TNG is uneven, but if you look at the symphony of its last episode, you realize that episode only exists because of the combined effect of all the episodes that preceded it. The fully realized characters, and their relationships, and the universe they lived in, both moral and physical.

Well, the show did run for seven seasons.  It might have started as an attempt to replicate the success of the original series with a new cast of characters, but it eventually grew into something else, something very different from the original series, but still great in its own way.

Agreed. Each of the Treks have their own charm. I had assumed that S1 of TNG was meant to project a kind of innocence or naivete as a baseline, to show growth/development in the second and subsequent seasons, starting with Riker growing out a beard. I had no idea at the time that it was coincidental. Thank Satan they dropped the idea of having Patrick Stewart wear a hairpiece.

I had  put off Voyager forever and might never have watched more than a few episodes if it hadn't been for my friend pestering me a few years back. He's a bit of a fanatic for sci0fi and Trek and Star Wars in particular. He owns a couple of dozen 35 mm prints of various films, and at one time had 10 or 12 LaserDisc players and hundreds of discs.

He kept bugging me to give Voyager another shot. So I watched a couple more episodes, then bought the series and binged it over a month or two. In the unlikely event that there is anyone here who hasn't watched more than a couple of episodes of Voyager, I caution you not to do any deep-diving into the production and cast beforehand, lest it sour your enjoyment.

And in that spirit I will set aside the crushing disappointment I felt when watching S2E01 of Picard months ago and give it another shot, starting with S2E02 tonight.

I'm not remotely as sophisticated and discerning as you guys when it comes to movies and shows. I just like to enjoy the characters and the emotional notes.

The only part of Voyager that I liked was Robert Picardo as the holographic doctor.

He was a guest on at least one episode of The Orville, along with Enterprise's John Billingsley. Doctor vs. doctor.:)  It's been so long that I can't recall which was the hero and which played the murderous psychopath :)

I enjoyed almost all the cast--Garrett Wang, Jeri Ryan, Tim Russ, etc. and even grudgingly came to enjoy and respect Kate Mulgrew. Back in the day I watched several ComiCon panels with several of the cast members.

If I want to see Jeri Ryan in a sci-fi show I'll watch Dark Skies.

If I want to see Tim Russ I'll watch ICarly.

I bought the third Picard season and am working my way through S2 at the moment, with a combination of FF/lightspeed skipping, subtitles/mute, and watching interesting sections at normal speed.

I don't remember Oppenheimer appearing on Star Trek.

Movie review thread is two threads down.

another season of Lower Decks another happy viewer

Still hilarious how aninamted satyrical series seem to grasp and understand more the trek universe .. and not just that but also build on the existing lore the other series did instead of burning it all down and doing something else cause nobody would had expected it ha!

I would say that even of Prodigy wich surprised me for good.. its actual good.. not "good for a cartoon" but good.. and its a kids show..

Its my new example of making something "for kids" doesnt mean making something dumb (ajam Star Wars resistance) and also it keeps building over the lore Voyager and other series did before and shows interesting stuff like what happent to all those Federation attempts to go to the delta quadrant to rescue Voyager? aparently all those ended up closing the gap to the Delta quadrant and there is a huge expanse between here and there where the Federation has lesser pressence the farther you go but still reachable by modern ships..

Funny enough both shows keep the federation as mit was portrayed in the classic shows instead of making them a bunch of corrupt despot arses... who would know..

Really enjoying the final season of Disco so far. Pairing its progressive themes and fantastic visual design with this season's lower stakes storytelling, greater focus on the ensemble characters, and a much lighter tone does wonders for the show. Too bad it took them so long to figure that out.

ST-DSC is still a thing? I almost dropped them at the beginning of S2 when they dumbed the show down to a ridiculous extent, presumably due to network mismanagement, but they managed to recover. I think I made it to S4 before bailing.

Lately I've been watching the extra material from ST-PIC S2, and just put the first S3 disk in the player last night. It was late, though, so I stopped partway through the intro and will start again sometime this week, probably.

Disco's vibe changes a lot after Season 2, mostly for the better I think. I'd recommend continuing to work your way through it.
