How come Leela's orphanarium looks like a prison?  I've always thought it would look like that orphanage in that movie Annie, but more techological.  Also, how come we never saw any alien kids there?

If you ask me, I thought Bender's Orphanarium was better!   :)

That's the joke; an orphanage with metal bars and a high (probably electrified) fence. Unexpected, thus funny.

They're probably dropped off at orphanages on the various alien homeworlds. When there's only a limited number of individuals from each race on Earth it's pretty easy to find the parents again, and that kinda defeat the whole idea of doorbell-babies.

For espresso chugging and beer brewing kids, 'orphanarium' is just a polite term.

Don't forget it's a minimum security orpahnarium. That's a big part of the joke.

As it has been stated, that was a joke. The fact that an orphanage would be a prison just reflects Leela's feelings on the subject.

If youre talking about the orphanarium in the Robot Arms, then yes, u totally agree. Just having the chance to have a bedtime story called "Bender's Police Record" makes me want to be a orphan...

Hahahaha, and the chance to be turned into meat for a Chinese restaurant must also be appealing then?

Well, this is the future, people, things have changed, and not always for the better. Perhaps that's just the way "orphanariums" are then.

Also, orhpanages and foster homes aren't always the best of places. You're assigned a number and are known by that, not your name, young children are often beaten when they're too young to think to tell anyone, the food is terrible, and there are bars on the windows and barbed wire fences surrounding the building.

Cat's are for petting! Not for eating!

Plus it would be impossible to get rid of all of the fur. trust me i'm a cat owner. Fur turns up everywhere. I found fur in my bra this morning and i can guarantee that neither of them were in that location at any point.

I just had a sudden mental image of Bender walking out of a Cat Shelter covered in cats, with a woman calling from the doorway "Come back soon!".   ;)

You all think Leela was probably abused at the orphanarium a'la Charles Dinkins novels like Oliver Twist and the whatnot?

I never read Oliver Twist so i don't know exactly what kind of abuse your talking about here. But we do know for a fact that Leela was emotionally abused, that was revealed in CHR. As for physical abuse, it's never been stated but considering how quickly she can go into violence mode i wouldn't be surprised. People who have been raised with violence are more likely to use violence.

Warden Vogel doesn't strike me as someone who would physically abuse children, and if any of the other orphans hit Leela most children in that age wouldn't hesitate to retaliate.

Her emotional abuse (or teasing/namecalling) is probably part of her will to use physical force, as mentioned in "Raging Bender": "I got to beat up someone who hurt my feelings in high school. Hah-hah!" And she did seem to enjoy beating up the boys in her Arcturian Kung-fu class.  <IMG SRC="http://peel.gotfuturama.com/ubb/wink.gif">

My mental image consisted of Venus' cats sleeping curled up inside her bra whenever she was out of the house. Cats are clever and evil.

I also don't see Vogal as being a physically imposing type of guy. I was thinking something more along the lines of an abusive foster family, or older orphans.

And Leela's emotional abuse wasn't just the teasing of the other orphans, remember Vogal use to tell her often that she was worthless and unlovable. Which is part of my theory of why she tends to date jerks: a subconscious belief that she doesn't deserve better.

And since my cats are much bigger than my bras i really doubt they're sleeping in them. They are both way to in love with my carpet. However i am flattered that you would think my rack is ample enough to hold 2 full grown 6 pound cats.
