I know I'm referencing an ancient post here, but, oh what the heck I'm curious too - Originally posted by fryfanSpyOrama: Well, I read about in at tvtome.com a year ago, saying that aparentally the whole series was building to the final episode. When it was certain that TDHAIPT was the final episode, it mentioned that Matt and David did the right thing in making this episode. Matt and David made this episode for insurance, because they feared the show would be cancelled. Now, if FOX was to renew the show, then Matt and David could go into what they had planned with the newly developed relationship of Fry/Leela. However, if FOX cancelled the show, then Matt and David had ended the show with a happy note to fans that Fry and Leela would be together, since it is what Matt and David have planned. Is this what Matt and David actually said or is this tvtome.com's opinion? I can't find the original article on tvtome's site, presumably because its age. Its fairly obvious where this relationship is headed, theres enough hints/clues within the eps themselves but I'm still curious as to what might have been if there had been a production season 5. I wonder if it'll be resolved in the movies. Back to the original topic of this thread: Elzars. It's expensive but hey he's trying to impress the woman he loves here, right? If he goes on a cheapskate date she's not going to be impressed.

This romance is over the entire world! Why not after they go to Elzars, they could spend the rest of the night at a romantic dock until their minds spread out. Until the next night...

Chug a Bug, that's pretty much what I recall Matt and David (if I may talk about them on a first name basis) saying on the DVD commentary to TDHAIP. As I recall, though with non-robotic accuracy, they pretty much knew the series would be cancelled after that season. They wanted a touching, hopeful, spectacular final episode, but they didn't want to tie all the plotlines up in one grand finale in case (and I can still hope) future episodes or movies might be made. So they split the difference, and made one of the sweetest, singingest, and funniest episodes ever, with a very touching ending in case Futurama never returned.
And, as for their "first" date (I mean, they did get married once, and there was the teenage episode, and the worm/holophonor seduction, and probably more that I'm forgetting), why not just a night at O'Zorgnax's Pub, or a day on the Moon? Neither Fry nor Leela have expensive tastes. They care much more about the person they're with. (Ask the Mayor's Aide, if you doubt that!)
