The point of the series finale was that Leela was beginning to see something in Fry that she never noticed before: she was suddenly attracted to him. This is fairly common, I think, when two people who have been acquaintances for years suddenly become romantic with one another.
And "cute as a bug's ear" is just an expression.

Hm, some people may womder now why I do post here, but even being a Lesbian I can say which of the male charcters I find most atractive.

Fry looks really nice and cool, cool in the 1980s meaning of that word. 
Also, in some way, his stupidity is ... well, in some way ... sorta cute. 
Also his humor and his boyish charme.

Btw: Does anyone has a framegrab of young Hermes? If I remember right, he also looked really nice.
And he is so bureaucratic
