Has anyone else noticed how many times Fry is dissected and/or butchered in Futurama, much more than anyone/thing else  :p e.g. His head being gruesomly ripped of his body in 'Put your head on my shoulder', Fry's hands being eaten by a T Rex, Fry's arm having been chopped off in Claw Plaque, Fry's head and limbs again being dissected at the end of WMIBACIL, Fry's hands being cut off and swapped for the Robot Devil's etc!

Have the Futurama crew got something against 20 odd year old males, a general passion for killing or what  :D??? When will they leave the poor fella alone, however hillarious  :)  :)  :).

What are your thoughts and feelings on this subject?

I think that Fry get the worst of it because its easier for them to ppick on a dumb guy from the 20th century then say, a cyclops that could kick their asses or a robot that could bend them, so on and so forth

Also, remember when Fry wants gills instead of lungs, and they almost do it but Leela saves him?

Fry's pretty much an easy target when it comes to danger and trouble.  I agree with jle1993 with the fact that since he's from the 20th Century and he's dumb as well.

In one writers commentary they said that the rule was, Fry looses his limbs, while Leela looses her senses (sight, hearing...)

Maybe something will happen like, Fry loses a limb defending Leela, and she loses her senses and starts dating him.

Or is that she gains her senses?

lol, nice jle1993, I like that theory!  Or just about any theory that ends up with Fry/Leela living happily ever after.

I think it's just that getting things chopped off is funny in a cartoon.  Matt Groening said he liked that (for example) the T Rex eating off Fry's hands, and a scene later he's exiting "Handcrafters", is like old Warner Bros cartoons where Elmer Fudd or Daffy loses an extremity, but a scene later its back - only in Futurama there's a technological explanation rather than it just being "Toon logic."

He also lost his teeth (Fry & the Slurm factory), hair (Luck of the Fryish), nose (Spanish Fry), and spleen (The Sting).

Yes, Fry's a little like Daffy Duck getting his beak blown off by a shotgun at point blank range and then putting it back on with a sour look on his face. He's that pissweak-yet-indestructible cartoon character who can get the living crap blasted out of him and keep getting up for more.

Bender has been a bit bashed up himself - he had his head knocked off in 'Love & Rocket' he had his arms fall off in 'Space Pilot 3000', 'Bender Gets Made' and 'Bendless Love'. He also Fell to peices when the people from the cryogenics lab beat him up in 'How hermes requisishioned his groove back' He was beat up a bit in 'Raging bnder' too. That's all i can think of but i am sure there is more  :)

Something of Bender's falls off or is damaged in nearly every episode.

But Bender is a robot and so his parts are detachable so its a little more Ok for it to happen to him, but Fry a human being "wrapped in a greasy T-Shirt" is a lot more fatal if things happen to him hence why I called it an 'unhealthy' obsession when the fatalities occur to Fry.

Also @ coldangel: Oh yeah his nose! How could I forget about that one its like the entire orientation of Spanish Fry... Doyyy lol   :p, further proving Fry is Matt Groening's animated punching bag   :D

Perhaps because Fry is so easygoing he's almost comatose most of the time, it takes something like amputation to shake him up and get some emotional angst going.

Plus, a limb hitting the ground with a splat like a dropped rib roast is unexpected...and therefore funny (in animation, anyway).

But I don't understand "p!$$-weak but indestructable."  Resilience IS a form of strength.

(Or are you saying his p!$$ is weak because he drinks American beer?  :p )

No, because he gets hacked to pieces easily and frequently, as opposed to being the one doing the dismembering.

I blew Zoidberg in half in my first fan-fiction.
He was okay though. They taped him back together.

Just like in RTEW. What happened to Zoidy in that ep was way worse then what happened to Fry.

Did any1 find it a bit odd the when zoidy fakes his death after leela saying he missed an organ that no-one cared?

That was the best gag in the whole film, it's the most hilarious gag Zoidberg's ever done intentionally.

Oh, and it's not always Fry that cops it. In Anthology of Interest #1 in Leela's section alone, everybody else gets 'got' except Fry, who more or less scores.

But my point is that everyone but Fry got decapitated.

I loved  it how Hermes was screaming but no-one else in the building noticed, not even Zoidberg  who was in the next room and saw Leela grab an axe. Weird huh?

What about the Shrimpkins?

you can get your hands re-built in 30 minutes and your head brought back from the dead, doesnt realy matter if you loose a limb or get killed in the future.

An observation:

The Futurama staff are concerned with sending up all aspects of Science Fiction, particularly the stuff on television. There are so many films where there's danger all around, yet the hero survives virtually unscathed (a notable exception is Luke Skywalker). Examples include Star Trek and Buck Rogers. This may be a deliberate attempt to "correct" the assumption that you can just walk blindly into a dangerous situation and become a hero.

Or it could be a message: The future is a dangerous place. For your safety, keep out!  :p

Yeah that could be it, to add a bit of reality to those situations and make fun at what the movies blaitently leave out.

This just shows that the humour in Futurama is much deeper then just simply thought up jokes, as it actually has reference to what other shows in the genre have left out...
