I've never bought the fact that she's an alien. There's some proof of the mutant theory in "I Second That Emotion" her parents are possibly seen in a scene, in the sewers. In "How Hermes ..", there's an x-ray shot, and she looks pretty much haman in that. ------------------ Click me!

::Crawls out from under the big pile of stones:: Originally posted by DrThunder88: I think Leela's mutant heritage could be a downfall for the show. Perhaps "anticlimactic" is a better word. I mean, she's been searching for her home for her entire life, and all of a sudden someone says "Silly girl, you don't come from a distant planet, you come from a shit-hole on Earth!" I agree. If Leela was a mutant it would ruin her character. Well, it would ruin her character for ME. How can she be an outsider, if she isn't alien. If she is a mutant, well that's just another kind of human. Besides, she haven't searched that extensively for her homeplanet yet. There was "A Bicyclops Built For Two", and a third of "AOI II", but that's it. They haven't emptied that well yet, and I would like some more episodes about it. For what it's worth: IMO, she is an alien. She said so herself, and her physicals would have picked it up, if she was a mutant.

I think Bender just recognized her shape as being human. If he was programmed to recognize Cyclops, he'd probably have loaded that language. IMO, ofcourse. Hmm, ruined may have been a bit too strong, I can see that. But it will make her character a lot less intriguing. Part of Leela's fascinating character is her outcast/outsider-status. Being the only member of an unknown species, who lives on Earth gives her some nice traits for future stories, and alternate points of view. Discovering that she is just a twist of nature, well lets just say that's not my idea of a good character development. And I don't think they've made enough stories about Leela's search for her homeplanet, to actually make her find it already. :: Ducks:: Hey, who threw that snowball!!

The aliens we've seen on Futurama is widely different in build and size. An explanation could be the programmers at Moms Friendly Robotfactory simply programmed Bender with shape- and size-recognition. A shape/size for every known memberspecies of DOOP, various animals, etc. As Leela is the only one of her kind on Earth, they wouldn't be aware of this option. When Bender saw the shape and size of Leela, the closest match was with a Human, and he loaded the appropriate language. Apparently the only thing separating the Human species from the Cyclopian species is the eye thing. But I could be wrong about the whole thing. Future episodes will show.
