In 'Into the wild green Yonder' during the poker match bender gets dealt 5 kings and Leo puts up his hand which has 5 fingers on it but when he is playing mini golf  he lines up the ball and only has 4 fingers on his hand.

Yeah, his having five fingers there is supposed to be a joke. They normally all have four.

It's not a goof, it was intentional, DXC says so on the commentary a few moments after it happens. :p

The five fingers were a joke.

All Matt Groening's characters have always had 4 fingers, and will always have 4 fingers. Period.

Just to clarify, the joke is that he has five fingers for that one shot because there are five kings in play in the game. Normally there should only be four kings in play and normally there should only be four fingers on his hand. Get it?

It's quite a subtle and somewhat surreal gag for Futurama, but it's also a damned fine joke if you ask me.

Huh. I somehow never noticed the fact that having five Kings is impossible. How silly of me.

I think that they did a similar joke in 'Homer The Heretic' when God had 5 fingers...

Yeah, when DXC explains Leo's five fingers in the commentary, he says the same joke happened one time in The Simpsons. He doesn't explain when and I only vaguely remember seeing that episode of The Simpsons, but you are probably right.

Matt Groening is god to The Simpsons and Futurama. So it only makes sense that he has 5 fingers

This seems familiar... Almost like I just read it three posts ago - before yours, but after the post you quoted...

How does the God Entity fit into this?

This is not the first time that they did that kind of joke in Futurama. Way back in the 3rd episode there was a giant squid with 7 tentacles.

I think that's a perfectly fine post.

The underwater apartment Fry and Bender check out in I, Roommate features a giant squid with 7 arms rather than 8 (Ratraccoon simply mistakenly said tentacles instead of arms).

What has that got to do with a Groening-style character having 5 fingers?

The octopus might have been a spoof on the way Groening drew hands:

- A human should have 5 fingers, and is drawn with only 4.
- An octopus should have 8 tentacles, and -using Groening's human hands as a humorous rule demanding a limb reduction by one- therefore will be drawn with only 7 tentacles.

(Of course, it might have been just a mistake on a "What the heck? No one will notice wether this bugger has seven or eight arms anyway, and we are on a budget and therefore will not spend time on fixing that mistake. The seven armed octopus is good enough for our viewers...." basis ;) )
