Quick question about the space bee episode when Fry gets killed by the stinger of a bee.  Leela starts going mad and finally goes out to find Fry's casket.  When she opens it she sees a weird portal inside and the camera pans in on her eye.  It starts turning different colors in a weird psychedelic fashion.  I swear I've seen that effect originally in some sort of weird futuristic gi joe type cartoon that had some bad guys in it that used some sort of generators to turn "normal" people into their own kind.

I was wondering if anyone has seen or knows what I'm talking about.  I had a vhs copy of that cartoon but lost it a long time ago.  Was this scene in Futurama referring to this cartoon or effect or was it pure coincidence?

Just interested if anyone would know.

The effect was a reference to a similar (and much, much, much, much longer) sequence in the legendary sci-fi movie "2001 - A Space Odyssey".

Never heard of the cartoon, though it might be referencing 2001 as well.

As they say in the commentary for "The Sting"; I love 2001, but that sequence is way too long.

Wasn't that eye thing also in the Simpsons, where Homer rides the Spinemelter 3000?

A Space Odyssey that's right!  I totally forgot that it had an effect like that.  Thus I thought that other cartoon was the first.

Thanks for the answer it was really starting to gnaw at me hehehe.  Thanks Teral!

Still wonder what that cartoon was though...
