I've seen these things on other message boards, and I was wondering if it was possible for them to be implemented here.  They're threads that never leave the top of the thread listing page.  I would think these would be useful for say, announcements, rules, rank listings, etc.  You know, stuff that gets asked about a lot.

I was actually thinking the same thing the other day.  Though I think "Sticky Threads" is generally a trademark of phpBB 2.0.0 and above.  PEEL uses Ultimate Bulletin Board 5.45b.  Though maybe [-mArc-] can rig something up.

What's that song at the end of Leela's Homeworld?

(Tries to run, but entire ass and one leg already shot off by the time I said Leela's.)

No, really, if this can be implemented, it's a great idea. It will reduce PEEL posting by about 40%, though.

Only Moderators and Admins would be able to use the Sticky function (which is generally how it's ran).  If that's what you're getting at.

Yes... and people who've seen the same question asked a million times wouldn't be as annoyed.

In other words, I'm all in favor of this idea.

Downsides:  The sticky thread(s) could be weeks old with no posts, and active topics would be under it/them, which might take some getting used to.

But I'm in favor of it.  If [-mArc-] can do it.

Why not just place links to these specific threads on the PEEL main page?

I don't like Sticky threads because instead of the posters choosing the current topic, it's like the board is controlling us and taking away our freedom. That's the way I look at it anyway, I'm sorry. It is a good idea though, if done correctly   :)

I like this idea. While we're at it we could also extend the "first page" so that there's still the same amount of topics visible. I dont know why I used "we", because I wouldnt be able to help at all with this.

You could have a section at the top for 'Sticky Threads' and then below it another table for the normal topics. Useful stickys:
FAQ
Ranks
Rules
There could also be a 'request sticky status' button on the page so if you think it should be sticky, you can ask for it.

This sounds like a good idea. I don't think it'll cut too much into the active threads. Mods and admins will be the only ones that can make a thread sticky, and I'm sure they'll select sticky threads very carefully.

[-mArc-]'s thinking about it, but it's still kinda iffy.

Nah, if mArc has to do the whole thing from the ground up, he should have last say.

And sticky things are always iffy, just ask Wanker.

Just one at the top of each forum would do (entitled: Read Me Now), just to lay down the rules to all the little newbie gumbies that wander by, without so much as two brain cells to rub together for warmth.Maybe restrict it to Aministrator posting only, that would keep out the moderators in their little moments of madness.

Examples of sticky thread types:

The 2002 PEELies
A generic newbie-welcoming thread
An explanation of the ranking system
Any others?

Regarding questions that always get asked, why not get the most helpful threads about those questions and send them to a locked-down forum much like the Museum, only a Futurama FAQ.

Also, and I've seen it at another UBB board, their possibly could always be a Announcement Forum that only Mods can post in.

Just my view. I still think Sticky threads are actually a good idea, but rather than have them clog up busy forums maybe send them to dedicated forums?  :)

Well, FAQ's, ranking system, rules, how to be an accepted PEELer (unlike sex_blah) should be in locked stickies at the top of this forum (or the information booth), and after registering the Newbies get forwarded to those.

Well, so far it seems as though the topics that would inevitably be Sticky can all fit into The Information Booth.  So maybe the Sticky option could be dedicated to only that forum?

That could work.  And I also like the idea of automatically sending a new registration to said forum.  And maybe make it mod/admin post only?

Just the one sicky thread would do. Include in it the PEEL FAQ and some rules of good conduct, the ranking system and anything else that needs saying in one large post. Call it Read Me First, close it and stick it.
If it is all in one easy to find place, it doesn't clog up the threads and newbies have no excuse for misanthropic behaviour.

I'm not sure if I understand it fully since I read the first 6 post then scanned the rest looking for dirty words, but if the thread that is deemed sticky appears as the latest post all the time, I say no, thats stupid, I fear change. If it simply means that when you look at the topics in a certain section for example the wish void, and the topic is always up top, I can live with that.

I don't know ...
I dislike sticky threads myself. If a thread is currently important, it will be near the top all the time anyway. If it's not important, then it shouldn't be there.
I don't want the top of say the info booth to be clogged with "what are the ranks" and similar things. This all only makes sense for fast paced boards (offtopic/general) which have threads with a long standing importance (info booth). The interection of these two sets is empty.

I'd rather put links to 2 or three threads in the "announcement" header of that board.

Besides that it's a pain to implement on the old UBB data structure.

Sticky threads are Ok, but seeing the same topic on the head again and again is annoying, unless its an important announcament.
