Avatars from comics and cartoons, such as Futurama, Family Guy, Ren & Stimpy, etc. should be scanned (the lines traced with black and recolored) instead of just cutting it out. The results are much clearer and sharper, a big advantage for the quality.

hey mongoose,

since you already shrunk that, it's quite hard to get it into a descent quality again. Do you still have the bigger image? That would make things much easier.

To the only problem with that picture you posted is that the filesize is too big. However, the only way of decreasing the filesize is to use lesser colors, and since homer and the background are yellow it can happen that you won't recognize him anymore.

Well here's a big a it gets, and even then it ain't that great.

If it would be easier, could you make the background transparent? Or does that take up even more bytes?

I don't really get what you want. The link you offered is a still picture, not an animation and it hardly can become an animation. Beside that animated avatars are not allowed on PEEL anyhow. 

As for the second one, what exactly do you want there? 90x90 isn't that small, in fact PEEL avatars are only 64x64.

Animated avatars aren't allowed on PEEL. Animated images in posts are. There's a difference. I believe it's something about PEEL's software that doesn't allow them and they make loading very slow and kill older and slower computers.

That's not the point. It doesn't matter to a webpage if a picture is animated or not - beside that animated files a re bigger and cause more traffic.
The real reason is that animated avatars are annoying. It may be funny for a while, but if you see my head spinning Fry as an avatar 5 times on every page, combined with a moonwalking Leela and an apologize dancing Zoidberg it gets damn well annoying. After all, it should be about what you say and not how your avatar makes it look.

There were 2 people on PEEL, both among the first 50 members and both not positing for like 5 years, that had animated avatars. Back then the decission was made.
