Pauly Shore wasn't necessarily needed for this episode, but he kind of helped it instead of damaging it.
Fry: You know, now you can live in an actual biodome!
Pauly Shore: An unappealing prospect. While researching for the part, I ran computer simulations proving, incontrovertably, that the whole bio-enclosure concept is fundamentally flawed. Be it expressed via dome, sphere, cube, or even the stately tetrohedron,...Bu-u-ddy.
That was such a great line in a not-so-great episode. I know that everyone hates Simpsons/Futurama comparisons, but I would like to make a point. In The Simpsons, celebrities show up in Springfield for no reason. They seem to be there only due to the fact that the crew can say something like, "We had Blink182 on our show." This kind of makes an episode seem less believable and that particular show loses something. But, on Futurama, celebrity appearances are actually justified. I mean, there's a head museum, so someone like Leanord Nimoy ("Space Pilot 3000" ) showing up makes a reasonable amount of sense. In the case of Pauly Shore, to justify Fry and Michelle eventually ending up in what they think is the year 4000, the crew needed a guest star or at the very least a cast member imitating a celebrity. In this case, the guest helped move the episode along and wasn't just brought in as a gimmick.

Al Gore man! What other show could you possibly get a vice president on? And as John Dimaggio pointed out in the commentary, his screaming as he's being sucked into the portal is huge! A vice president who does better voice dubs than most people who go in the studio? Man, if I was eligible to vote that election, I would have voted for him. Actually, I still won't be eligible for this one(I'll be about 17 and 6 months or so) so do me a favor and don't vote for George Bush.
Also, I don't know who in here's familiar with Maddox, but in his "interview" with Brendan Fraser, he sums up the feelings of Pauly Shore that I felt from watching the Cryonic Woman:
Ruler of the Universe: Anyway, about Encino Man, what the hell were you thinking? Why did you ever decide to work with a bitch like Pauly Shore?
Brendan Fraser: Well, I hate to admit it, but the truth is that Pauly Shore is my brother, and since we're both such shitty actors, we decided to give the audience a mega dose of super suck by being in a movie together.
Priceless. Also, Rosanne sucked.

Go Gygax! Pauly was just unecessary. I knew Fry had no taste but.. a Pauly Shore fan? I think I'll strike that from his record. Dan Castellanata is a favorite of mine. Interesting to note is that he plays the Genie in the second Aladdin movie and didn't do at all a bad job of it. Dan has the power to take a mediocre song["Nothing in the world quite like a Friend"] and make it fun. You see how he's vastly improved songs that were great already in Futurama!

It might make me sound like a nerdy trekkie, but loved seeing all the old Star Trek cast on "where no fan has gone b4". Seeing Johnathan Franks roll down from behind Nemoy in the head museum was f'n hilarious.
