I'm just asking, because I got way
too much time on my hands during the summer.

Welcome to PEEL, fry2006!  :)

Where does the number 2006 come from?

I'm not sure if I should say this but uh... best quality futurama episodes on kazaa are around 225,000 kb, dunno how long it would take to make the flash that big. I have no idea how it works =/.

It all depends on how good you are, how long you want the episode to be, and what kind of quality (detail, animation, backgrounds, etc.) you're going for. Also, don't get your hopes up looking for voice actors - if you make a Flash episode, it will have to be silent (with subtitles or comic book-style speech balloons). That said, the best estimate I can give you right now is "a damn while".

Oh, and Fryvilous, the size of decent quality mpeg-encoded episodes has nothing to do with the size of a Flash file. A 20-minute Flash file wouldn't be bigger than 10-15 megs tops; even smaller if the animator knows what he's doing. You'll notice a slight difference in MPEG quality and Flash quality as well.

Uh, you might want to look around PEEL a bit. You aren't the first to come up with that bright idea, and I believe there's currently an active Flash episode project starting. The more animators you have, the less time it will take. Personally, I'm not holding my breath on this, but we do have fanart (of various degrees of complexity), fanfiction, and fan-made music videos, so if you guys are mosachistic enough to take a stab at Flash episodes, go right ahead.

Hah! If you're talking about a highschool computer programming class, you won't learn sh!t about computers, and you'll only learn the a little arbitrary code if you're lucky. If you want to learn about computers, do it on your own time. You're sitting in front of one right now; why not explore a bit?

EDIT: ACK! Sorry for the dobule post. It was an accident! I swear!

the website for that Insomnia movie (the one with pacino) had a 10 minute flash intro...you'd have to make it into a downloadable file for the modem-using people...

The hardest part is making voices that match the real actors'. But, anime knowledge to the rescue! Why not just dub in any Japanese voices and subtitle it? It will look like they're really speaking, but in a language that we don't understand.

Even if you did manage to get a team of animators together - almost everyone would have a noticeably different style of drawing and/or animating.

The main problem with using Flash as an animation package would be that it's based on vector graphics. Flash has evolved, but it mainly relies on vectors.

If you are drawing the Futurama characters and backgrounds in a vector format, then it will probably take much less time to animate, because simple movements can be accomplished in a very short space of time. As said above, problems occur with lip sync, mainly down to Flash's architecture.

If you're using a Flash file with a large number of 3D graphics and bitmaps, the file size will be large. Even a ten minute Futurama flash animated episode will be a long download, so you'll probably want to render the animation into a video format.

it would be very hard, but then again if you look at the quality of some of the newground's videos (not the stick figure ones) it is possible to make something look good in flash. but like sheep said it would be very hard to get the voices right.

No flash file is going to be bigger than a movie file ever.

Anyway, it wouldn't take as long as one would think, if you're smart about it.

Oh and for voices, try to make everything said a quote from the show. Then all you need to do is a lot of sound editing =P

In that case, we would need someone else to be an expert in sound editing software. Something like Cool Edit or Soundforge.

But the Japanese voices was a good idea. But then Japanese people would translate it, and find out it's anime dialouge.

make everything a quote frome the show would be a good idea, but hard to write an episode like that.
I don't think the Japanese thing would be good, it just seems pointless.
I wouldn't have a problem if ppl did voices themselves, I know they wouldn't sound like the character, but I could live with it.

This would be awful, espacially for people who have seen every episode so far (and a fan-flash project would aim at these people I guess).
No matter how good the animation would be, it would be flat.
There wouldn't be room for any new jokes or storylines.

To find voices that match the real actors voices will be very hard but I could live with that.
So, make thoses flash-episodes!!!!  :D

Forget it, I already joined a Flash episode project, but I think later on, I'll do a spinoff and any of you are welcome to help.
