...and there was no last minute call from the governer to save it.

On Monday, USAToday.com released it's yearly "what's renewed and what's been cancelled" list. And, as many of us feared, "Futurama" is offically cancelled (or 'near death', which means the same thing, I guess.)

I knew we all kinda saw this coming, but at least now we know for certain. Oh well, it was a good run while it lasted. I honestly doubt CN or any other network will commission new episodes, but I guess we can always hope.

For the whole list of cancelled and renewed shows, click here.(credit, AICN)

But has there been an official statment by FOX about this?
I mean so far it's the same situation like last year.
And yes, I know it is a weak argument, but this is better than nothing.

I have a feeling that FOX is never going to release an 'offical' statement. Unless, they release it right before "Devil's Hands..." This is probably as clear as we're going to get.

Sooner or later they have to make a decision, after all, CN bought the rights to show all episodes of Futurama, but it looks like that they are only allowed to show the one that have been aired by FOX.
Therefore I doubt that FOX won't get far with their "Don't ask, won't tell" policy.

Hey, when FOX cancelled The Tick live show, I'm pretty sure there were a few episodes left they never aired.  Let's hope this isn't the case.

Maybe they'll make them DVD only.  Europe could yet see them before the US...

Look on the bright side.  Futurama has finished with 72 truly great episodes.  At least it didn't linger into the kind of living hell where the Simpsons finds itself.

Better for it to die and be missed as a classic, than live and grow stale and pallid like The Simpsons is.

Actually a lot of the newer Simpsons have been pretty good, the show appears to be rising again.  And while some of the recent seasons haven't been as great as before, there have been a loooooooooot of good episodes.

While everyone else is bashing the Simpsons noone is mentioning episodes like HOM'R, Trilogy of Error, Hungry Hungry Homer, Behind the Laughter, THOH 11 (the dolphins and ghost dad most noticbly).  These are some of my favorite Simpsons eps, and I've been watching since season 3.

While I'd say Futurama is my favorite show, Simpsons still remains the best show on TV, like Futurama even the worst ep of Simpsons is a million times better than any other slop you'll find on TV.

Well, isn't that the same position as Futurama was before? I know Futurama is dead, but i want FOX to announce it.

Anyway, Futurama has reached cult status really, cancelled way before its time, and it appears that the best episodes written of Futurama will come too late to save it from FOX.

We've had over a year now to accept that Futurama is near dead. The writers have split up and they are on other jobs, they are not all magically going to quit to re-start Futurama, as much as i want them to!

CN could still pick up Futurama, and there's the Sky discussion (unlikely though). The problem is that it may never be the same Futurama that we loved.

I'm reading the list. I'm glad some of the other shows are cancelled. The Pitts are cancelled and only 2 eps have even aired! Oliver Beene is on the Bubble too. Good. And Wanda at large, before its even aired. Heh heh.

Hopefully the Grubbs crash and burn too.

Im at the point where Ive ridden FOX off as a waste of air space. I just hope they do the right thing at this point which is declare to everyone that yes its over. I dont want to see em try n pull some B.S. that would prevent us from seeing the last eps ever made, or that would make us wait until late 2005 to see em/buy em DVD.

I for one believe that CN will order more episodes if the ratings continue to climb. After all, that is what they did and continue to do with Home Movies.

i wouldn't count on it. Home Movies doesn't have complicated 3d shots and is way way cheaper to produce then Futurama

Oh really, and in what way should I take that comment.  I'm not interested in a flame-war, which would be very childish, but I grew up with the Simpsons and am complete out and out Simpsons dork, not some kid who just started watching it.

Post Groeinig simpsons suck, ive only ever seen one that i enjoyed. And it wasnt something that Matt would have produced. It was Groeinig and his team that made the simpsons funny. Now its just all lowbrow and Aimed at Childeren. The simpsons was supposed to be a Adult show, But now fox has control its just another Mass Marketing experiment.
And this report doesnt seem to tell us anything new.

My understanding is that MAY is when FOX (and most networks) officially announce cancellations.  The USA Today article is an annual thing that is pretty accurate, but Futurama is not cancelled until FOX releases the memo saying it is.  No, I'm in no way thinking it won't be cancelled, but as of today, it's still  a part of FOX's line-up, in the loosest use of that phrase possible.

Also, I think it's interesting as one poster noted above that the overall quality of the Simpsons has risen this year.  Makes you wonder how many of Futurama's writers, animators and other personnel moved over there.  I know if I was producing an animated comedy, I'd want to hire as much of the Futurama team as possible.  While not every episode was an A+, how many other television comedies, animated or not can claim 72 excellent episodes with even the "weakest" providing some really good laughs.

Give me a break, Fastlane and John Doe on a bubble, there ratings are so bad I am supprised there is someone advertising on those shows. Futurama has been a loser twice this season, once because of NFL overrun, Fastlane and John Doe have been a loser since Jan and lost to the WB, not even Futurama loses to the WB Network.

Lots of people refer to Futurama as "that cartoon with Peggy Bundy with that one huge eye that (Fox/cartoon channel) shows.

Damn straight, Fastlane's ratings are bad. And look at all the promotion it gets. I swear, I see one of their dumbass, shameless ratings-stunt, "look, you almost get to see a girl take off her shirt! Oh wow, now two girls are kissing!" commercials every five minutes.

Futurama has lots of sexy female nudity...why isn't FOX promoting the hell out of that?

Sorry. I'll try to bash those episodes more often in the future.

(although to be fair, most of those episodes were amusing when I first saw them. But they don't have much in the way of re-watchability. And aren't they kind of old now? You're talking season 11, and we're about to finish up season 14, right?)

Or, your brain has turned into a soft mushey goo as a result of watching too much Simpsons, and now you can't tell what's good from what's bad.

I'm just throwing out possibilities here.

Ok well yesterday i was in the futurama chat in CGEF and as we talked we all realized that most of us are nerds, that means futurama has "intelligent humour.
This theory (if you agree with it) might have something to do with futurama having almost no audience (apart from no advert and cheesy schedules).
I want to hear your comment 'bout my theory.

Despite the gloom and doom, I still hold out for any bit of hope for Futurama returning.  Seeing most the other crap Fox and the other networks show, how can they possibly cancel it?  I think it directly points to the dumbing down of America in general.

As for The Simpsons...The show is still great.  Yeah, I'll admit there haven't been as many episodes that I'd classify as classic, but it's still my favorite. Would you rather watch King of the Hill, Fastlane or Teen Idol?
