I like that it's a reference to the sci fi author who came up with the term robot (that's one of the many sci fi trivia bits I learned about through the show).  Chapek is a fun word to say.
And to think it was actually not him and it was a spur of random moment... As he had problem how to call artificial humans, because he simply didn´t like his original term "labors". So his brother, while painting a wall I think said "Just call them robots..."

Not sure if it's generally known, but the Russian word for 'work' transliterates to 'robota', with 'worker' having the same root. That's (I always assumed) where the inspiration for the word 'robot' comes from (after some Russian conjugation, presumably...). Didn't know about the brother, though, that's neat.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I read somewhere that it means "slave."

Its not conjugation exactly. Robota is pretty much Czech word for corvée but it has secondary slang meaning for work in general and as you can see, it has these connotations across many Slavic languages.

Now THAT'S what I call Futurama. Episodes like this are what I'd hoped for from the entire season. If not for the gravity of plot, at least pacing and characterization. This was damn near perfect, and definitely a high note to end the first bit of Futurama's return on. It had funny moments, and heartfelt ones as well. If I was new to the show, and somebody told me that this was part of the OG run, I'd buy it.

Like... it would have been a great middle-season episode of a previous season. It also would have been amazing had Rick & Morty not done a thematically-similar episode years ago which was riotously funny.

It just feels... behind? Like considering many shows like the aforementioned R&M have been heavily inspired by Futurama, the writers just have not kept ahead of its new contemporaries. It was a sad reminder of that for me honestly.

Now that all is said and done, I can't say I enjoyed this revival much at all. It definitely put a bad taste in my mouth after the sweet note it ended on.

I don't think Futurama should have to avoid any theme already covered by Rick and Morty which got to do 60+ episodes whilst Futurama was on hiatus. Rick and Morty actually won an Emmy for copying the time button from Meanwhile which was clearly a concept taken directly from Futurama whilst the idea that we are living in a simulation and each simulation has another simulation going on for infinity wasn't invented by R&M and I thought the Futurama episode was quite different to the R&M one.

It started off poorly, got a little better, and then ended well. 7/10. But hardly an original premise, and hardly an original treatment of it.

It wasn't spectacular.

But neither was it the total garbage that we've been shown is possible. So I suppose that overall, it deserves a little begrudging praise.

And there were some moments I truly enjoyed. Although there were just as many where I groaned and felt some of the enjoyment and appreciation I started off as having for the series slip away.

Which has been a fairly consistent thing for this run, TBH. Here's hoping that it picks up with the next set of episodes.

If I recall correctly, they straight up mention Futurama by name in that episode so the inspiration was very deliberate.

I don't think they directly took an idea from Futurama so much as they probably landed on an idea, a member of the writing staff said "This is kinda similar to something they did on Futurama" and someone else probably said "Eh, who cares? Let's just namedrop them".

It was an alright episode, and I think they could have done so much more with the premise.   But it was alright.   Certainly an improvement over the genuinely awful episodes that made up this season, along with the Santa episode.
