Just so you know, uploading the site to the new server will take some 10 hours. Some sections are already up and you can see them by entering the full url (like http://www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/fanart/ for example) but others aren't up or are just partially up.A major D'OH in this move: we forgot to back up the news items. Our backup dates back to January 10th :P We contacted SmooveNet and they might just graciously send us that file, but if not, there's going to be a big gap in the news items database until I reconstruct it using the archived HTML files and Google's cache :P (Edit: heh, Very-Tired-And-In-Need-Of-Sleep-TOTPD) [This message has been edited by Leandro (edited 10-24-2005).]

Good News, Everyone! We've just heard from Mr. Madhouse himself! OK, Leandro and Company, skip on the Valium, more beer! I just took a look at the site - Fan Fiction and Fan Art is up and running - the new server seems to work a little faster than the old one - but then that just may be my imagination. Here's hoping Jaguar gives Leandro and company fewer headaches than the previous server(s). [This message has been edited by Ralph Snart (edited 10-24-2005).]

Done I'll write a news update shortly, gotta mess with the scripts first. We got a copy of our old news database, so nothing was lost. Sounds and Framegrabs are back up Videoclips to follow.

Captain Leandro, a job well done. You deserve some R&R - a certain robot has built a park with Blackjack and Hookers - lots of Hookers. I'll meet you there!

Great to see the site back; nice work.Should people hold off on sending fanfic/art submissions until everything's going smoothly again?

I just spent several hours programming our new Update Center that'll replace all the old update scripts. I honestly tried to fix the old scripts so we could update as soon as possible, but no such luck. Most of the changes in the script will only be seen by the webmasters (for example, checking that all the fan art files in the server are actually linked from the fan art section; that already saved us 23MB of space in over 600 'orphan' files), but some things will be noticeable for visitors, including scrapping the Rank system in favor of the 'last update' sort mechanism, which is already coded. I expect to finish the Fan Art section of the update script tomorrow; so start sending over your art. Fan Fiction will be next in the list, and that one will probably require a MAJOR recode, even worse than Fan Art. So... let's say Fan Art tomorrow, Fan Fiction on the weekend.

By the way, all major praise in this move should be directed to Graham -- I am mostly taking care of the programming side, but he's the one who put up over 35 thousand files in the new server and put the Framegrabs, Sounds and Videoclips sections back in order.

Let's say I'm taking feedback on this. There WAS cheating in the Fan Fiction section too. I can do one of three things: 1) Leave the current system alone. Cheating will still be there and easy to do. 2) Require votes to be email-validated. You vote, an email is sent to you with a link, once you click that link your vote is added. One vote per email address. Cheating will be annoying and boring to do, since you have to create a new email account every time you vote. 3) Use a comments system. Along with your vote, you have to enter a comment. Cheaters will have to write different comments each time, as short comments like 'this rocks' and 'good job' will be rejected. Now, I'd rather NOT go with option 1. Option 2 is the best, but I imagine lots of people will avoid voting just so we "don't get a hold of their email address" (even if the script would just send a email to that address and never store it, people are paranoid). Option 3 is also good because it forces comments that would also be valuable feedback for writers, but people with nothing to say probably will not vote to avoid thinking too much in something, while cheaers can still try to come up with 100 ways to say their fic rules. I think I'll implement Option 2.

yay for option 2! Although option 3 would have also been acceptable.Or another possible option, could you make it like the polls here on PEEL where after you vote once it just won't let you vote again?

Venus, that works on PEEL because you gave PEEL your email address when you registered and you're logged in. Asking for people to register to get a username and password just to vote will most likely end up with nobody getting registered.

Much as I've been wanting a comments system to completely replace the ranking system for years, I guess Option 2 is probably best. I suppose if anyone has anything serious enough to say about fan-fics or fan-arts they can take it to the message boards...Anyway, great to see the site back up, and immessurable kudos to you all

The 'last update' sorting method is up in the Fan Art section, though I *seriously* don't like how the index pages look now. I plan to put some random images in the wasted space to the right, but the table's nagging me. I'll add headers and maybe shade the contents later... I need sleep now.

Leandro is having problems with getting his scripts to work. Also the holidays are putting time constraints on him. If anyone has knowledge about Perl and can assist with writing scripts, I'm sure that Leandro won't turn down the offer of assistance.

Uh, see the post above your post. Leandro has a life, and his job is more time consuming this time of year. If anybody on this board has some programming experience, Leandro may appreciate some trouble-shooting assistance with the posting scripts. I would be glad to help, but my computer programming is limited to Fortran, Basic, Pascal, C and Turbo C. In other words, my knowledge is at least a decade antiquated and I'd be no help. ------------------

For those of you interested, the Futurama Voice Actors page has been massively updated. Errors fixed, and every single speaking role for a Futurama character in the series has been covered and assigned to a voice actor... Phew! http://www.futurama-madhouse.com.ar/voices.shtml

You idiot, "D'oh" is a very common word in society, it's not exclusive to The Simpsons - that's just where it originated. I mean, come on, it's even in the dictionary now.And stop posting that awful signature.

As a programmer, there's NOTHING I hate more than a 'random error' -- which means you follows the same steps, and one time it works, and the second it returns an error, and then later it works again, and so on.So when a script of mine does that, I get _really_ pissed off :P Time to rewrite the scripts again, and I really hope I can get everything working before everybody declares the site a lost cause...

Ah, the joy of programming; debugging. Been there, got the t-shirt, sold it on ebay. Scripting, eh? I got told I should learn Perl. "Because it will look good on your resume." Heh, yeah maybe. Hope you get that script sorted without to much aggravation.

You can send them to anyone of the webmasters, it really doesn't matter who. We all perform fanart, fanfic, poems, songs, crapart, wp, younameit, updates. So pick a name and send.Though if you send in fanfics, you'll have to be patient, it'll be a while before it will be posted (plus we all have a rather big backlog of fanfics waiting in the pipe).

Actually, until Leandro has done battle with the Script Monster and won, can you send them to him. Eventually, once things are working fine, then you can send them to any webmaster you choose. It'll probably get announced when you can do so. Still, if you forget, our webmasters will direct the work towards the ever eager Leandro.
