I liked the "Battlestar Galactica" movies, a bit cheesy but overall good fun. Haven't seen them in years though.
Starbuck is a woman now? Oh, come on that's just wrong. Dirk "Faceman" Benedict is the only Starbuck there is.
"Battlestar Galactica" followed in the wake of "Star Wars" and wa san attempt to cash in on the new popularity of space movies, so naturally the ships were greatly inspired by "Star Wars". The Cylon footsoldier, the Centurion, is very remiscent of storm troopers as well. The battlestars reminded me of star destroyers when I was younger.

Doesn't sound good, I loved the original series when I was a child, the later series when they reached Earth was pretty lame though... I doubt this new programme will be that bad.

(...x wing bits) Dude, this was designed as a COMPLETE RE-IMAGINING OF THE SERIES. They share the blindingly obvious stuff that couldn't have been changed, but other than that, it's much, much darker, and more thought-provoking. It is NOT like the original at all. One annoyance: They constantly zoom in on the spaceships in the middle of the space battles. Other than that, it's very good. But i must tell you again: It's nothing like the original series. But they're now gonna have a new Battlestar Galactica series, continuing from where the second miniseries episode left off. I guess SCI-FI figures that since they cancelled 'Farscape' (which is coming back, too, whoo! though, not on SCI-FI), they needed a new series about the search for Earth. Either way, the new BSG is damn good. But don't expect anything but the unchangeable similarities to be the same.

Someone must have thought that handheld-style shaky zooms were cool. It would've been okay if they only did it a couple of times, but it happens in nearly every space scene. Here's something I wrote about the movies for another site: It's not so much a space opera as a sci-fi version of The Day After (with some Sept. 11 thrown in, of course). That's basically all the first part is (aside from the first half hour, which is a boring blend of people yelling and sex/makeout scenes), and some of the second. The characters so dull or annoying that I sort of hoped the Cylons would kill them, but I know that if that did happen, it'd be some calculated tearjerking scene. Everything seems calculated for tearjerks: "You see the cute little girl on the ship from Silent Running? Well, she's going to die! Ha ha ha!"
In the whole four hours, we see robot Cylons in exactly two scenes, and they don't do anything. Mostly they're represented by an unexplainedly nymphomaniac woman whose only facial expression is one of amused surprise. Yes, this movie goes for the old money-saving sci-fi trick of having alien/robot enemies who disguise themselves as humans. In fact, they say that you can't tell for sure who's who even with detailed medical exams, so I wonder what exactly makes them robots. Still, I guess it wasn't as bad as that Doctor Who potential script in which the Daleks looked like humans.
And yes, in the end, they head for Earth. Actually, Adama lies to everyone about going there because he thinks it doesn't exist, and appropriately wraps his explanation in religious references. So if this becomes a series, it'll be just another quest show, and we know that if they ever find Earth, it'll be because they're getting desperate for ratings. Also, if they find it, it'll be 1980 and everyone will have bad hair.

*BUMP* Well, seems as the last discussion here happened right after the 2 parts mini-series have been shown. Although there was alot of criticism, the mini-series was successful enough to turn into a full series. After watching 9 episodes of the series, this is what I have to say:
Lets start by saying that the series picks up exactly where the mini-series dropped us. The last remains of the human civilization running away from the Cylons. All the actors, all the details, everything and everyone that appeared on the mini-series (even those with minor roles) continue to play in the series. The show itself is different. First of all, there are none of the sci-fi technical mambo-jumbo. Sure the ships got FTL drives, but the show tries to stay as realistic as possible. No laser beams, no plasma engine fluid thingies or anything like that. Just like the mini-series, there are only cannons and missiles in the fire-fight. Another thing that seperates this show from the crowd is that it's 30 minutes long, not the usual 45 minutes-per-episode for a sci-fi show. Is it good? perhaps. There aren't many moments that should have been left in the editing room but still found themselves into the series to kill time... but on the other hand, the main problem the crew faces (sabotage, etc.) gets resolved relatively quickly. That doesn't mean that there are no turns and twists on the plot, since the main plot appears in all the episodes (much like Stargate: Atlantis). How is the show itself? it delivers. There are dramatic moments, there are action moments, and there are comedic moments. If you decide to watch the show, be advised: The first three episodes aren't that great. They seem bland and tasteless. But if you manage to stay and watch the show, you're in for a treat once the show picks up the pace starting episode 4. Alot of the problems that were in the mini-series were fixed in the show, some stayed. I never seen the original Battlestar galactica so I can't compare, but overall, if you manage to survive the beginning, you're in for a pleasurable ride.

This is a question to the Americans amongst us: are you planning to tune in to the premier of the series (jan. 14)?

Well, according to rating charts the series had superb ratings, meaning a Season 2 will probably be ordered by the Sci-Fi channel. According to an interview with Ronald D. Moore, Sci-Fi channel already asked them to writer 6 more scripts for now in case the new season will get picked up, and on the next season we should expect to see more of the Cylon world and how they function as a society.

I watched the mini-series DVD, and I have to say, I enjoyed it. I agree with Fred, Boomer is hot!
However, there's not enough robot cylons for my liking, and that clunky camera thing on the space battles grates after a while.

bankrupt, where do you base your claim that the show is getting a second season? I've been carefully following internet news sites about it (GEOS, the official site of Scifi.com and Skyone) and no one said anything. Yes, the show had superb rating in the US, so the show will probably get another season, but still as far as I know no new episodes were ordered, the creators were just told to write 6 scripts "just in case".
Melllvar, the mini series really had some poor Cylon-robot action, but in the series you get plenty of it.

With a 2.6 HH rating and 3.1 million viewers P2+, Battlestar staked its claim as: * #1 for cable (8pm-11pm) among P25-54 * #1 for cable (8pm-11pm) among P18-49 * #1 for cable (8pm-11pm) among M25-54 * #1 for cable (8pm-11pm) among M18-49 * #1 for cable (8pm-11pm) among M18-34 * #2 for cable (8pm-11pm) P2+ * #2 for cable (8pm-11pm) among P18-34 * #4 for cable (8pm-11pm) among F25-54 * #7 for cable (8pm-11pm) among F18-49 * SCI FI's highest-rated January program ever * SCI FI's highest-rated 1st quarter series telecast ever * SCI FI's second highest-rated series telecast ever, behind only Stargate: Atlantis' series premiere in summer 2004 Taken from http://www.geos.tv As you can see, the ratings for the premier episodes were pretty damn good... question is how it is doing now after the premier.

I'm still disappointed Farscape got canceled, cause Sci-Fi could've had a killer lineup of Battlestar, Farscape, Stargate, and Stargate Atlantis if they hadn't - but that's another thread....anyways, I cannot wait for January. That season finale cliffhanger topped the first season cliffhanger, which I thought was impossible...

Originally posted by bankrupt: I like those series too, but I find Galactica to be more riveting. It's like Apples and Oranges. They're just too different to be compared to each other. Galactica is definitely more action-oriented and dramatic, while Stargate is much more comedic and is maybe even targeted at a younger, or at least different audience. Both both shows have hot chick stars (aka "Six" and "Col. Carter" ).

BUMPI haven't watched much BSG lately until I watched 'Pegasus' last week. I was drawn back into the series (at least they don't have Baltar rutting with Six like a dog in heat every other scene now). I like the character changes. President Roslin has just weeks left to live and she's let Adama know about her illness. She knows that Cain is a vicious, heartless, souless creature and Roslin is imploring Adama to kill Cain before she can kill him (just last year would Roslin even had entertained such a thought?) Now for next week we have a large scale battle with the Cylon Fleet planned with Cain and Adama hatching plans to assasinate each other. This will make for some good action based sci-fi. My TiVo is warmed up and ready to go!
