Sil, this is taken from the official Red Dwarf site: Originally posted on Reddwarf.co.uk: The cinematic ambitions of the series became immediately evident when it was decided to remove the studio audience from the equation. The demands of the live performance had done little for the cast's nerves, and the effects that the show demanded were increasing every season to the point where almost half of series VI was pre-recorded. Though it does seem I was wrong about the actual canned-ness of the laughter. According to the site, the complete recorded episodes were shown to an audience after filming. Woo! TOTP qoutey dance!

That was the case with Bodyswap, which (nod to PCC Fred) was the only ep prior to series 7 which was not filmed with the live audience. You can hear Craig Charles laughing at himself on the track - they were present at the screening. Also, in the infamous 'Wilma Flintstone' scene, unless I am much mistaken, you can hear Chris Barrie go 'Ha!' very loudly - presumably from out of shot waiting for a cue or something - in response to 'well, I would go with Betty. But I'd be thinking of Wilma.'

In case anyone hasn't seen it and doesn't want to know. Lister sets off the ship's self destruct system by mistake from a vending machine (one of the scutters has rewired it) and Kryten transplants one of the senior staff's hologrammatic personality into Lister's body so that she can deactivate it. Later, Lister and Rimmer swap bodies so that Rimmer can get Lister's body fit while Lister does nothing. Rimmer pigs out while he's in Lister's body because as a hologram, he can't touch or taste anything and eventually Lister forces them to swap back. Later, Kryten (under Rimmer's orders) chloroforms Lister and swaps again and does a runner. You can watch the rest of it yourself! Thing is, their voices swap too, which meant the entire episode had to be redubbed with Chris Barrie and Craig Charles trying to read in their lines matching the lip sync of the other actor performing as the other. Geddit? (Hence the absence of a live audience at the time of filming). Chris Barrie's acting in that episode is absolutely phenomenal - he gets Lister and the Cat down perfectly, including the way their mouths move respective to their accents. However, because Craig Charles speaks so much faster than Chris Barrie, the latter didn't quite get it as polished as the former because he had to say the lines quicker but still as Rimmer. Equally, Craig Charles admits that he wasn't doing as tight an impression of Rimmer as Chris Barrie was of Lister. It's one of my favourite, if not my all time favourite episode of RD.

Yeah - that's not Bodyswap, love. I think the one you mean is in series 4...? I'm not sure either.
February 16th.

The lift one is Stasis Leak. Another early split screen nightmare.

KRYTEN: Let's face it - you humies believe any old crud. RIMMER: Whereas there is, of course Silicon Heaven where all dead androids go. KRYTEN: Sir, I know it's tough for you to take that while you have all the advantages in this life, mechanicals have them in the next. But that's the way it is. RIMMER: But I could show you the page in your manual where it explains you've been fitted with a Silicon Heaven belief chip to give you succour in adversity. KRYTEN: A page planted by non-believers to test our faith. =================== Absolute brilliance. This scene was in Ian Symes of Ganymede & Titan's original script for The Inquisitor. A real pity it never made it into the actual episode.

The Australian release has been delayed until march 10! this is quite odd as we have always been within a week of the british release, and it seems that the US are getting the discs at the same time as the rest of the world, the used to be 6months behind.
damn I hate waiting

I'll second that!
If you watch the ep-by-ep comments, Craig Charles' argument for why us fans don't like Meltdown as much is due to the fact that the set looks like a park in London. Because it is one. A fair enough comment, but I don't think it's the most hated - just not hugely popular. The scene with Winnie the Pooh has got to be a classic, no matter your view of the rest of the ep.
Lister: They seem to be lining up in some sort of firing squad. Hang on they're bringing someone out (A beat). It's Winnie the Pooh! They're tying him to the stake. He's refusing the blindfold (gunshots). That is something no-one should ever have to see.
Also the Caligula scene. Hooray for Tony Hawks.

I want to thank all of you in this thread for introducing me to Red Dwarf. I've only seen three episodes so far, (on PBS) but I like what I see.

Watch Red Dwarf. You will join the devout!
aslate: the S4 DVDs let you choose between the animated extras menu and a plain text one. Did someone say that already? Well, who cares?

Originally posted by fryfanSpyOrama: Thank you SLackJawedMoron, but what about Red Dwarf Omnibus is that the fifth? I heard that the series has gone up to eight. Is that true? No. There are four Red Dwarf novels: 1. Infinity welcomes careful drivers (Rob Grant/Doug Naylor) 2. Better Than Life (Rob Grant/Doug Naylor) 3. Last Human (Doug Naylor) 4. Backwards (Rob Grant) The Omnibus was simply 'Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers' (also known simply as 'Red Dwarf [The Novel]') and 'Better Than Life' complied together with a bunch of bonus material. There have been no further Red Dwarf novels, and the order of Backwards vs. Last Human is based purely upon release date, given how each occurs in a seperate "universe/timeline/dimension/whatever". The television series has gone up to 8 'seasons' (as it would be termed in America), but the continuity of the novels is completely different to the TV series (despite a number of similarites).

Yeah, it apparently is not highly rated. I gotta say, it's not one of my favourites, but there are a couple that are worse. I didn't enjoy Confidence and Paranoia or Parallel Universe as much as I did Meltdown (prepares to be shot twice through the lungs).
