Not sure about your second quote Gleno but Aswad were covered by Ace of Base but Googling for some info it turns out it was originally done by someone called Luther Ingram.
I only know as far back as the Aswad version though. Clicky.

Not exactly something I relate to but I think the lyrics are good:

A condemning fear strikes down
Things they cannot understand
An excuse to cover up weaknesses that lie within
Lies
Laying your guilt and pain
On people that had no part in the molding of a life
That creates it’s destruction
Lies
Right before your very eyes
A reflection of the mistakes
To the end you will deny
Your part in the demise of a life
Lack of comprehension
Thriving on your cliche
Compelled by self-resentment

Reaching into the minds of those that created
The depression in which they
In which they drowned their flesh and blood
Lies
So easy to blame the
Everlasting fear on a pathetic attempt
To justify the ending of life
Lies
Right before your very eyes
A reflection of the mistakes
To the end you will deny
Your part in the demise of a life
Lack of comprehension
Thriving on your cliche
Compelled by self-resentment

Snapcase - I.D./Hinsight
We were those people
Created upon synthetic dreams of economic merit
But we are now the pariahs
Recreated upon the nostalgia of a future exile
An exile to an unknown home
We are your savages
The so-called uncivilized
We are the untamed
We are the pariahs
Come watch the stars with me
And so I know that it's been told that I sold my soul
Deny my solitude
I can't make it alone
I admit to you, I can't make it alone
And I need you to know I can't
How I have forsaken you
How I deserted you
Stranded, I deserve to be
With my accomplishments, I abandoned you
Come live to die with me
I can't make it alone
I admit to you, I can't make it alone
And I need you to know I can't
I can't
We can

This is punk rock as I see it most of the time:

You've taken punk and turned it into a fucking joke
Your "honesty and caring" is so fucking fake
A closed off clique, a popularity contest
High school shit, shitting on others not part of your sound
We won't take part, your scene is shit

Well, they were part of the wave, and they stuck with the same formula- they do it well, but today it seems a bit uniform because there really wasn't much variation in that branch of the genre when it formed, and therefore, they seem generic compared to those that followed. Still- they're one of my favourite bands.

The difference is in the lyrics- they are accurate, immensely sarcastic and filled with keen observations.

Fat Mike is a smart guy, even if I don't like his voice, I will admit that much. And they've been around for over 20 years, so I give them credit for that. I will admit I like a few NOFX songs, but I can't say I really like the band as a whole.

A great song from an amazing album:

King Crimson- Starless

Sundown dazzling day,
Gold through my eyes,
But my eyes turned within only see,
Starless and bible black.

Old friend charity,
Cruel twisted smile,
And the smile signals emptiness for me,
Starless and bible black.

Ice blue silver sky,
Fades into grey,
To a grey hope that all yearns to be,
Starless and bible black.

I like NOFX, but I think their older stuff (like Punk in Drublic) is much better than the new stuff (like the War on Errorism). I agree with Pikka Bird about the lyrics - they're pretty good.

Generic? Turn on the radio if you want to hear something generic.

Best NoFX song is: Falling in Love- kind of a fresh take on a love song. An alternate choice would be Lori Meyers.

Lori Meyers is one of my favorites...

Back on subject, this is supposed to be about lyrics. Too bad Red Warszawa's lyrics are in Danish, they are very entertainment (well some of them anyway). "Children are stupid and ugly" - so true!

Aesop Rock - No Regrets
Lucy was 7 and wore a head of blue barrettes
City born into this world with no knowledge and no regrets
Had a piece of yellow chalk with which she'd draw upon the street
The many faces of the various locals that she would meet
There was Joshua, age 10
Bully of the block
Who always took her milk money at the morning bus stop
There was Mrs. Crabtree and her poodle
She always gave a wave and holler on her weekly trip down to the bingo
parlor
And she drew
Men, women, kids, sunsets, clouds
And she drew
Skyscrapers, fruit stands, cities, towns
Always said hello to passers-by
They'd ask her why she passed the time
Attachin' lines to concrete
But she would only smile
Now all the other children living in or near her building
Ran around like tyrants, soaking up the open fire hydrants
They would say
"Hey little Lucy, wanna come jump double dutch?"
Lucy would pause, look, grin and say
"I'm busy, thank you much"
Well, well, one year passed
And believe it or not
She covered every last inch of the entire sidewalk,
And she stopped-
"Lucy, after all this, you're just giving in today??"
She said:
"I'm not giving in, I'm finished," and walked away

Mostly because my name is also Lucy. And I'm 7.

Necro & Ill Bill - White Slavery
Women need to be loved, injected with needles and drugs
subjected to torture and kidnapped, they need to succumb
it's proven, I feed 'em dog food, they prefer human
make them savagely beat each other bloody for my amusement
It's all fun and games, I keep 'em handcuffed and chained
sexually make them do the most disgusting things
starve them to cannibals, make them eat each others brains...

Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely
That there, that's not me
I go where I please
I walk through walls
I float down the Liffey

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here

In a little while
I'll be gone
The moment's already passed
Yeah, it's gone

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here

Strobe lights and blown speakers
Fireworks and hurricanes

I'm not here
This isn't happening
I'm not here, I'm not here....

Blink 182
Don't leave me all alone
Just drop me off at home
I'll be fine, it's not the first
Just like last time, but a little worse

She said I'm not the one that she thinks about and
She said it stopped being fun, I just bring her down
I said, "don't let your future be destroyed by my past."
She said, "don't let my door hit your a**."

One more chance, I'll try this time
I'll give you yours, I won't take mine
I'll listen up, pretend to care
Go on ahead, I'll meet you there
Let's try this one more time with feeling

I used to be able to recite this by heart. I wish I still could, it's great.

Hangin' out in the comode
Listening to Depeche Mode
You look like some kind of toad
Why are you a moron?

Got a skateboard "gnarly rad"
With money from you mom and dad
Take a bath cause you smell bad
Why are you a moron?

Walkin' down old south street
Say "Hello" to the kids you meet
If knowing you is such a treat
Why are you a moron?

Got kicked out of public school
Make a waste of our gene pool
Face it asshole you're a fool
Why are you a moron?

"I'm staring at a wall going nothing at all
Gotta get outta here I could use some beer
Wish I could get some beer
I could use some beer tonight"

In and out of trendy clubs
With a pair of day-glo gloves
You're the only one you love
Why are you a moron?

Tell use you got something to say
Then bore us with your anarchy
We just wish you'd go away
Why are you a moron?

A trendy losers what you are
It's your scene are you're the czar
I'd like to see you covered with tar
Why are you a moron?

Creeps like you should be wiped out
You've got a face just like a trout
Listen to everybody shout
Why are you a moron?

"I'm following the trend 'cause I wanna
have some friends. I want to be somebody.
Don't wanna be a 'nobody'. I wanna be
with someone tonight."

I swear that you are Hitler's clone
Spread disease wherever you roam
Got the brains of a garden gnome
Why are you a moron?

Voted for Reagan not once but twice
And think that Jerry Farwell's nice
Do you keep your brain on ice?
Why are you a moron?

In the end you're all alone
No one calls you on the phone
Got no job you've got no home
Why are you a moron?

Hangin' out in the comode
Listening to Depeche Mode
You look like some kind a toad
You're just a fucking moron!

"I'm freezing up inside. All my brain cells
have died. Gonna get out of here. I'm
gonna get out of here. I'm gonna get out of here tonight."

The Reindeer Section - Your Sweet Voice

Your sweet voice
Lets me know there is a choice
Please me slow
Oh, Much more slowly than that

And when we danced
We danced warm cheek to cold cheek
A sideways glance
I knew you were looking at him

I can't call you a friend
Cause when you left me here
You left me here to die
Don't worry I wont call you again
Cause when I take a hint
I take it pretty hard
And when you broke my heart
you broke it into shards of glass

The telephone yells out
At me to wake
I won't be blamed
For someone else's mistakes
It's your sweet voice
Sounding cheery and warm
It breaks my heart
But I summon up all my charm

Can I call you my friend?
It's been so long
Since we have talked
and I miss you
Don't worry I'm over you right now
So my feelings wont get in the way of it
Oh, I miss the way we talked
about the little things

In this bad times, I can not enjoy a day without listening to this song:

I Can't Let Maggie Go

She makes me laugh, she makes me cry,
With a twinkle of her eye,
She flies like a bird in the sky,
She flies like a bird and I wish that she was mine,
She flies like a bird,
Oh me, oh my, I see, I sigh,
Now I know I can't let Maggie go.

We walk here and we walk there,
People stop and people stare,
Cos she flies like a bird in the sky,
She flies like a bird and I wish that she was mine,
She flies like a bird,
Oh me, oh my, I see, I sigh,
Now I know I can't let Maggie go.

She flies like a bird in the sky,
She flies like a bird and I wish that she was mine,
She flies like a bird,
Oh me, oh my, I see, I sigh,
Now I know I can't let Maggie go.

She flies like a bird in the sky,
She flies like a bird and I wish that she was mine,
She flies like a bird,
Oh me, oh my, I see, I sigh,
Now I know I can't let Maggie go.

The Who - Helpless Dancer
When a man is running from his boss
Who hold a gun that fires "cost"
And people die from being cold
Or left alone because they’re old
And bombs are dropped on fighting cats
And children’s dreams are run with rats
If you complain you disappear
Just like the lesbians and queers
No one can love without the grace
Of some unseen and distant face
And you get beaten up by blacks
Who though they worked still got the sack
And when your soul tells you to hide
Your very right to die denied
And in the battle on the streets
You fight computers and receipts
And when a man is trying to change
But only causes further pain
You realize that all along
Something in us going wrong...

You stop dancing.

Beach Boys: Til I Die:
I'm a cork on the ocean
Floating over the raging sea
How deep is the ocean?
How deep is the ocean?
I lost my way
Hey hey hey

I'm a rock in a landslide
Rolling over the mountainside
How deep is the valley?
How deep is the valley?
It kills my soul
Hey hey hey

I'm a leaf on a windy day
Pretty soon I'll be blown away
How long will the wind blow?
How long will the wind blow?
Ohhhh

Until I die
Until I die
These things I'll be until I die

I first heard this song a few months ago on the radio and i was so haunting. It was written b4 i was even born, but i feel such a connection to the lyrics. Its such a sad and emotional song and it's really humbling. Just thinking about how small and insignificant you are in the grand scheme of things in the universe. Just really makes you think. Download it or buy the CD and just close your eyes and listen. Seriously, it broke my heart and made me cry the first time i heard it.

For some reasons, I can relate to these lyrics a lot, despite the fact that my personal interpretation of this song is different than the original meaning:

At the Drive-In - Cosmonaut

We sample from the shelves
Tore a page out from this chapter
Deface the essays in the books that you're reading
We are the leeches that stop the bleeding
Deficit attention program
By any means necessary
Blare sirens to the library
Whisper instructions to the book-wormed glossary

Is it heavier than air - tell us, is the black box lying?

Aeronautics hacked
The spine of a paragraph
Prepare to indent, a coma that read-
Floating in a sound-proof costume
Here comes the monolith
Brass knuckles for the hissie fit
An abbreviation for the landing of fleets
Incoming

Position the stitches - like miles of torpedos
Permission was hinted
Lungs that hollered in a sleeper hold

Is it heavier than air - tell us is the black box lying?

Eels are great but alot of their lyrics are a bit overly depressing. "No one will no my name until it's on the stone" (from Luckky day in hell) for example.

My all time favourite lyrics are from Bad Days by the Flaming Lips.
"You're sorta stuck where you are,
but in your dreams you can buy expensive cars,
or live on mars and have it your way.
And you hate your boss at your job,
but in your dreams you can blow his head off.
In your dreams show no mercy."

Aimée Mann - Save Me

I think many people want to be saved...

You look like a perfect fit
For a girl in need of a tourniquet

But can you save me
Come on and save me
If you could save me
From the ranks of the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone

'Cause I can tell
You know what it's like
The long farewell of the hunger strike

But can you save me
Come on and save me
If you could save me
From the ranks of the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone

You struck me dumb like radium
Like Peter Pan or Superman

You will come to save me
C'mon and save me
If you could save me
From the ranks of the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
'Cept the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
But the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone

C'mon and save me
Why don't you save me
If you could save me
From the ranks of the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone

Except the freaks
Who suspect they could never love anyone
Except the freaks who could never love anyone
