Great drawings greythinkywhale. Graph paper is really helpful sometimes, I use graph paper for my drawings too sometimes but it ends up uneven anyway. Enjoy your stay here!

Question: If you're someone like me, with absolutely no natural artistic ability at all, and you want to learn how to draw something that doesn't look like it has a severe congenital deffect, what's the best way to go about it? Can drawing be learned or am i doomed to stick-figures forever?

It can be learned. I'd show you some of my craptastic darwings from last year, but my scanner is weird and I don't want to blind people who did nothing against me.   ;) Just practice and stuff. Also, one of thoe how to draw manga books helped me. proportions, how to make it not look crappy...so...yeah
And CrazyFanGirl, that scan looks nice!  :D

A young Leela looking for direction in life. She'd probably find much more direction looking at the floor than all those god damn stars above her head.

I am in awe.

Short answer - Yes, drawing can be learned.
The whole 'natural artistic ability' thing is overrated, like any skill (e.g. playing the piano) artistic talent can be learned, it just takes a lot of practice, and a little bit of reading. I think a lot of people just get disheartened by early attempts being totally dire, which is the problem with art. If you fuck up a note while playing the piano you can just forget about it and move on. With a bad pencil drawing, you have something in your face reminding you how bad you are. Never mind stick figures, try something ambitious that you don't think you could pull off. It helps to be totally naive when starting out.

Hope that helps  :)/ made sense    .

As everyone else has said. Yes, drawing can be learned, and it don't matter who you are.
I find one of the best things to do when "sketching" is to take ones time in doing it, constantly go back and look at your reference picture and ajust yours acordingly.

When I first stated out it would take me along time to do a half way decent picture, but everytime I did one, I'd learn something new and be able to cut down on the time it would take me to do another.

That might not help, but thats the way I started.  ;)

Warning in advance, the linework sucks cause i am just now learning photoshop and i have not yet mastered the Pen Tool, so i had to trace the image by hand. Plus this is my first attempt at fanart ever and i can't really draw.

Ooh..bloody

That's actually pretty neat Venus. Definitely excellent for your first time with photoshop. I've got no artistic talent (I think) so I would never post anything I've done. Doing that makes you a great artist. I definitely think you've got some talent. A pretty neat concept. Has the blood dried? It's a weird color  :p Other then that, Neat!

it's a weird color cause of the color of the surfaces it's resting on/mixed with. Blood does neat things depending on what it's on.

I was watching this pic load and thinking, nice pose, good colouring, and then the rest of the pic loads up and my mind just goes, Disturbing disturbing disturbing.....

But its a "Bloody" good piece of work you got there. Keep it coming.

I don't know why you were asking for advice on how to draw, Venus.  Clearly you can already draw better than most of the people posting fan art here.

Leela getting her leg bitten off by a shark, though?  Wouldn't Leela be the one more likely to win that fight?  I mean, we're talking about a woman who owns her own harpoon.

Oh well, I guess she's off to Leg Crafters, then.

She was swimming and the shark came up from behind. She never saw it coming. You would think a 20 foot White shark would be hard to miss, but enough people get their asses chewed off to suggest otherwise.

And i'm really not that great of an artist it took 4-5 trys while scrutinizing the dvd tutorials to produce a passable Leela.

Well, hard work can obviously make up for a lack of natural talent, then.  Keep at it, Venus.  Like anything else, to get better at drawing you just need to practice.

And I thought my love of Futurama and my love of graphic disemboweling would never be combined in the fanart world.
It doesn't help that I have a budding fascination with amputees. Maybe I shall post more of my Fry In Robot Hell drawings.
there are.. too many.
Until then.

Also, Grey Thinkey Whale, your drawing almost made me crazy. It took me a  while to realize that it actually was blinking at me

I agree with Kloudes, Fry has a boyish thing about him in that picture. Again, a bit angsty, but he looks really cute and Nibbler too.

winna, what sort of wizardry is that in your pic? The background in the thumbnail is black, yet the fullsize pic gray. My poor self gets confused.

L'edite: How could I forget to comment on Venus' new pic? There you went, saying you couldn't draw and wanted to learn--lemme tell you something, this is so much better than most of the fanart out there. A bit disturbing, but in a good way. Of course. Nice PS'ing, too  :D
