I was actually thinking seriously... for once.
A thousand years into the future one would assume that sexuality would have become somewhat amorphous in nature. (Let's face it - it already is).
Bisexuality in primary characters (not Fry, as he's from more primative times) would be pretty cool - it works well in Torchwood.
Leela could have a fling with a woman. Bender's already (sort of) had a gay fling with Calculon.

You're all sick freaks, that's what you are.

I wouldn't be surprised (actually, I would be a bit) if Leela and Bender had some romantic tension between each other. Leela was Bender's best friend at one point in the series ("The Honking" ).

Leela and Amy? Leela already has Fry (or Bender), and Amy has made a commitment to Kif. The most action we have ever got of the two would be the wrestling scene in "Jurassic Bark".

With Hermes and Zoidberg, that would be a "love/hate" thing going on.

Last, the Cubert and Dwight gay relationship actually seems pretty plausible. Though they're only kids and have made very seldom appearances on the show, they never shown any attraction to the opposite gender. In fact, Dwight screamed out in "Three Hundred Big Boys" that he wished that he had two mommies. He was probably just too terrified, but it sort of helps support this relationship.

I wonder if there are any closeted shippers for the Randy/his boyfriend relationship?

Hey come on be fair, Amy could break up with Kif due to his commitment to his job and not to her, and Leela never say for definate she was with Fry or Bender, there is a chance. It's not sick.

Well, the two might experiment with the possibility...

Futurama just doesn't seem like the show to destroy two relationships that they have made out over the past five years and create a wild lesbian relationship. If it was a temporary, one episode deal, that might work out, but I'd doubt it. Of course, it's still fun for the episodes to hint towards a relationship between the two. It kind of reminds me of the nasty robosexual relationship possibility between Fry and Bender. Yes, they may silently hint towards it, but anything further just would not really be like Futurama.

By the way, the "sick freaks" thing was supposed to be a joke. As a dedicated Fry/Leela shipper, I find it a bit sick to think of Fry or Leela being with somebody else. However, that doesn't mean that I'm not a sick freak too and look at the possibilities with the oddball relationship between other characters at times.  roll eyes

On this topic, there is a fan fiction on the Leela Zone that is against Fry and Leela's relationship and supports the Fry/Bender relationship. I didn't like it very much- though I do admit that I don't like any fan fictions that much either. But that's just my personal taste. Also, if you search on YouTube, there is a short music video inspired by the Fry/Bender relationship possibility (done to the song "One Fine Day" ). It was actually quite entertaining, but doesn't nearly match up to the quality of Simple Nick's videos. If you haven't watched any of Simple Nick's Futurama videos, go and have a look- he just recently made a Fry/Bender friendship one, too.

I saw a Fry/Bender fic at fanfiction.net.  I didn't read it, so I can't vouch for it's quality, but there was apparantly m-preg involved.

Future or not, I cannot fathom how that would even work.

A bit more on-topic: my stance on slash in Futurama is the same as my stance on it in any other fandom.  If it is not grossly out of character for two people to be paired up, and if they are not thrown together simply because the author wanted to write a story ridden with lemony yaoi/yuri scenes, then I'll accept it (and possibly embrace it, depending on the couple).  I ship a couple of same sex couples in other fandoms, but I honestly don't see the potential for a similar pairing involving any Futurama characters (save for Randy... and maybe Zapp).  That doesn't mean it isn't there; maybe I'm just not looking hard enough.

I do support the Fry/Bender ship because I love slash and I few more reasons I forgot. Also they're already like... supersquishybestbuds <3.

Thanks 1BDI, that happens a lot to me.

I read that fic you mentioned, by the way - it was due to one of Farnsworth's freak experiments on Fry.

Futurama has had more male pregnancies than female. Bender was pregnant with beer in "The Route of all Evil", Kif was pregnant to Leela in "Kif Gets Knocked up a Notch", and Zapp was pregnant with a bunch of aliens in "DOOP the Right Thing" (issue 4). I think that's a bit much... or not. It's all the funner with the males doing a female's job.

It wasn't the idea of a male getting pregnant that threw me off so much as it was the idea of a human reproducing with a robot (Bender doesn't even have DNA... and I'm going to pretend for the moment that "RNA" doesn't count).  I guess it would take one of Farnsworth's experiments for something like that to be possible.

Actually, since I dragged it up: do robots reproduce?  We've heard mention of robot children before, and Bender claims to have parents, but can two robots get together and actually produce offspring without some sort of 3rd party engineer being involved?

With all due respect, JLE, It'll NEVER happen.... The Amy/Leela thing. I would probably riot, only because of how much I'm so sold onto the Fry/Leela thing.

As far as other "possible" relationships you guys have mentioned, it'll only happen in fanfics. Seriously..., any other way is like messing with the laws of the universe. Lets not try to break what is meant to be!

I don't think the Leela/Amy thing would ever happen either. With Amy always insulting Leela. In fact Leela kills Amy in both AOIs just for insulting her, unlike everyone else who she killed for discovering she was the one behind the murders. I'm not saying they hate each other as there have been alot of times when they seem to be good friends. I just think that they wouldn't be able to spend too much time together without Leela jamming her into the clock again.

It could perhaps be plausible in the context of a parallel universe Futurama episode along the lines of the Farnsworth Parabox. in fact the possibility for various 'shipping' themes gay or straight could be accomplished in this context.

Yeah, I know, and I meant nothing by it. I don't know why, but I was just really bothered by people saying that it would be leela marrying someone else other than fry, and it's really affected me in a negative way even when I'm at work, or doing other stuff. So wierd, since nothing else has really affected me like this before. If I sounded mean, I apologize.  smile

Hmmm... Leela and Amy?  That would be an interesting diversion.  I agree that I wouldn't want any serious relationship to obstruct the Fry/Leela pairing but I'd be entertained by Leela and Amy...probably way more than a grown man should be.

My favorite pairing is, of course, Fry and Leela. But if that didn't happen, I'd say Fry and Bender. I don't really think the relationship is romantic, but they care a lot for each other, and do have good chemistry.

Apparently Hermes and Zoidberg solved their differences by the end of the last season, as seen in Spanish Fry and have started a twisted romantic relationship.

Torchwood... Isn't that supposed to be an anagram of 'Ow! Hot Cord!'?

No, wait... 'Crowd Hoot'!

I refuse to befoul any other combination of letters by acknowledging any other connections. No other connections at all. No, wait, hold on... Maybe one...

That's it. An appropriate metaphor, to say the least.

Wow. Um, the writing was nice, I'll give it that, but it was simply the most OOC fanfic for anything I've ever read, and the ending was so forced, sudden, and awful...Fanfics like this temporarily soil the characters on the show completely for me.

1) Canon, you mean. Cannon is what you shoot things out of.

2) Decent chance? Yes, certainly. And Yul Brynner just might be missing a few hairs.

3) Leela and Amy, interesting? You would have to throw far more than canon out the window in order to make that work. Like, say, the dynamics of their enviroment. The dynamics of their relation. Their personalities, to wit. By the time it's all brought together, and assuming they are open to 'bending that way', what you've got left would not be Futurama, and thus, would not be interesting.

This thread needs a reboot...

Two score and one years ago my mother brought forth on this continent a new fangirl(1), conceived in liberty,(2) who became dedicated (eventually) to the proposition that a remarkable ’Ship(3) was conceived for Futurama, and that this ’Ship is the True Love of Leela and Fry.

Now she is involved in a great fandom, testing whether that ’Ship, or any ’Ship so conceived and so written, can be discussed thoroughly into the ground. We are all met on a great forum known as PEEL. We have come to dedicate a portion of that forum as an especial blathering-place for those who here give their valuable free time(4) that this One True ’Ship might be grokked(5) in its fullness.  It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this, who says it isn’t?!

But, in a larger sense, we can not define -- we can not foresee -- we can not resolve -- this ’Ship. The brave creators, Matt & David and all the others who with them wrote the series, have already envisioned it, far above our poor powers to add or subtract.

The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what The Futurama Staff did (and shall now do so once more)(!). It is for us the fans, rather, to be dedicated here to exploring the ’Ship which They Who Created have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored writers we take increased devotion to that ’Ship for which they gave a reasonably full measure of effort -- that we here highly resolve that these writers shall not have written in vain -- that this ’Ship, under Groening, shall have a devoted portion of this fandom -- and that a fine animated science fiction action comedy drama containing Fry and Leela,(6) pairing Fry and Leela, and ’Shipping Fry and Leela, shall not go unpraised nor perish from this ’verse.(7)

(1) “a new fangirl...” Yeah, I think I was born fannish...the first song I learned to sing was the Batman theme(8), and my invisible companions were Ruff & Ready(9)

(2)”conceived in liberty ...” ...or at least while taking a few liberties  flirt

(3) “a remarkable ’Ship...” if you’re tuning in late to the glory that is Futurama fandom, ’Ship is short for RelationShip (10)

(4) “valuable free time....”  Valuable to SOMEBODY... sometime... somewhere in the world.... it could happen!

(5)”grokked....” “It’s from the books of Robert Heinlein, it’s a word in the language of his Martians, and it means roughly “to understand utterly, with all your being.” See here for more.

(6) “containing Fry and Leela,...” No detraction of any other character is implied by this statement! Of COURSE Bender and the rest of the cast are vital to Futurama as a whole; they’re just not centrally involved to the Fry&Leela ’Ship, and that is what we are discussing here.  smile

(7)”...from this ’verse.”  Short for “universe.”  It’s from Firefly

(8) “first song...Batman theme...” If anyone’s interested, I pronounced it: “Loidle loidle loidle loidle Baa-baa!” (Hmmmm....didn’t think so. )

(9) “Ruff and Ready” (on reruns)

(10) “’Ship” in this usage originated in X-files fandom...and I’m not gonna elaborate any farther.  Darned if I’ll do a footnote from a footnote from a footnote!
