I'm pretty sure the comics are not canon. For the most part they aren't even written by actual Futurama staff writers.

And Leela's expression at the end of the sting wasn't happy, but it wasn't unhappy either. It was rather solemn. She was relieved to find that Fry wasn't dead and was touched that he would stay by her side when everything looked so hopeless.

No, I don't think of them as canon either. I don't have all of them, so I don't have proof either way, but do they actually reference TDHAIP or any of the other later episodes? 'Cause they could just be set before the end of the series still.

That is indeed very pessimistic, Mr I'm-the-world's-biggest-shipper! I noticed that before, too, and the thought crossed my mind... But I quickly dismissed it! Of course Leela is thrilled to see Fry alive; she's just exhausted, and probably in a fair bit of shock as well, I should imagine.

I swear, Xanfor, you're the most pessimistic shipper I ever met! You really need to work on your blithe, oblivious certainty in the infinite power of True Love.   wink

Honest and true - it never occurred to me that anyone could think Fry&Leela's expressions at the end of "The Sting" were un-shippy at all. In fact, I consider the way they look in the hug to be one of the shippiest parts of the episode!   No, they're not "happy - " nor should they be.  That was entirely too intense of an episode - and too profound a moment for both of them - for happycheerysmiles.

Think about it - Leela thought Fry was dead, and Fry thought Leela was half a step away from death.  They're both relieved, but bone tired (physically AND emotionally), and they both know just how close it was.

Fry in particular looks...ravaged, and terrified, like a man who's been dragged halfway across the gates of Hell but managed to claw his way back out again.  You can't come away from that without feeling a bit of the "it ALMOST happened, oh my God..."  That's how Fry looks to me.

Leela...well, "tired" isn't the way I'd put it.  I get "tired" helping my friends move.  She's just been laying there for two weeks - her muscles have begun to atrophy (not in any permanent way, but still), she's only eaten what the IV could put in her, and she's no doubt weak as a baby (literally). She has no energy reserves, and I mean none - zip, zero, nada, bugger all.  Ever had the flu so bad that walking to the bathroom left you weak and shaking and covered with cold sweat?  That's what Leela's feeling, I'd bet anything.  Watch her - she lays there in the same position from the moment she wakes up, her hands crossed on her chest, only turning her head. The only time she moves is to hug Fry, and I'm pretty sure that was all the strength she had at the moment.

In fact, I'm pretty sure she was so tired that she couldn't even feel the full force of the emotional impact from that moment - when you're physically run down enough, your body kind of "shuts off" your emotions, because you don't have the wherewithall to handle them.  Otherwise, I'm utterly certain she'd be looking as tortured as Fry.  To Leela, it wasn't just "close," it was all the way over into the red zone and time just sort of rewrote itself to cancel out the consequences of her mistake.  She's going to feel like she's "on borrowed time" for a while when it all sets in....both in terms of her own life, which she nearly lost, and Fry's, which she believed she lost for a substantial amount of subjective time.

If Leela had looked "happy," I'd've been sorely disappointed.  The fact that she's solemn indicates to me that she knows how close a brush with disaster she had, and that the only thing that pulled her back was Fry not giving up on her.

See, now, why I said Venus was the Queen of Shipperdom?  In one sentence, Venus explained Leela's expression perfectly, while I shoveled great gobs of words up to do it half as well.

And I thought you distilled the essence of Leela in that scene perfectly...I knew there was a word I was looking for to explain the impression I got from Leela's expression, and I had read your post, but it was before I went back to pg.1 and read Xanfor's and so I hadn't "context'd" it properly, so I ended up meandering around the mulberry bush while you had already picked the right mulberry.  Leela looked like she was deeply touched by what Fry had done for her, that's actually the word I was looking for.

In comparison, I thought I did much better describing Fry's expression - two sentences for him, vs. three paragraphs for Leela (and I actually cut out about a quarter of what I'd written as being repetitive or redundant.  Why is it so easy to ramble on in posts and so hard to write story narrative?  roll eyes ) Although I guess the stuff about just how tired she was wasn't really redundant, and I've been wanting to point out how motionless she was right after she woke up for a while....

I still think yours is better.  But I thank you, my Queen.  love

Don't worry about that until AFTER you finish the whole first draft (it's waaaaay too easy to get detoured into minute adjustments to the first bits than get on with the much harder work of generating new prose...don't ask me how I know this).

(Sounds a bit cryptic, doesn't it? Okay...let me just say that I have more highly-polished first chapters to unfinished long stories than anyone I know.... *sigh* )

(And I'm doing my best to tune out the early chapters of the current tale going "tweak meee!  tweeeeak meeeeee!  you knoooow you waaaant tooooooooo!" all the time.  Do they always have to sound like the Chimpmunks?  Oy... )

Also, have I mentioned how glad I am you're back?  It's so nice to defend ship with you again...  smile

Hey, do you just realize that I made you say something that Ralph actually listened to? Thank me, and only me!

Now, see here, I don't believe in any of that pessimistic stuff I said, or any pessimistic stuff I say at all. I knew Leela was numb and tired and I agree with Shiny and Venus completely. All I'm trying to do here is provoke everyone into giving their full interpretations of certain events. My next movie is going to go deep into the characters and I want to know if there's anything I missed about them. I may notice expressions that are off, but then again, I missed Fry and Leela hanging out in 'Three Hundred Big Boys', and the probable highly likely obvious tie-in with 'The Farnsworth Parabox'.

As proof of my optimisim, see here at my future avatar:

Leela doesn't break off this kiss right away! Of course she's slightly shocked, but in that case, does that mean that she's thinking slower than Fry, who realized what was going on right away? Probably not, because Fry has probably rehearsed that scene in his mind hundreds of times, while Leela, well, hasn't. But Leela knows when somebody is kissing her against her consent, and, as a result, Fry got the flowers in his mouth. But Leela hesitated, and for this brief framegrab, seems to be enjoying it. See, her hand is even embracing him back! And we, of course, due to the timing of the next time skip, have no idea exactly how long this kiss continued before the entire picture of what was happening conglomerated in Leela's mind, causing her to return to rational thought.
But when Fry impulsively kissed her, did Leela become temporarily swept away? YES![/b]

And concerning the comics: I believe that there is reference to 'The Devil's Hands are Idol Playthings' in 'Xmas Time is Fear', concerning the fact Nixon left with the Robot Devil.

And I agree with JBERGES. Defending ship is better than abandoning ship.      big grin

Now, seeing how as this is a new page and all, it's time for my signature.

Don't ever forget who I am.

I, too, often look to that moment in times of utter despair and depressing pessimism as a clear display of what is meant to be... She's definitely kissing him back, isn't she?  love

But then again, if you look just after the time skip (can't find a framegrab, sorry), whilst Fry has a slight smile on his face, Leela doesn't (yes, Xanfor, I analyse expressions too!  big grin). Fry is smiling before he realises what's going on, because he then looks shocked, so I'm assuming that their expressions were 'left over' from the bit that was skipped over. So...why isn't Leela happy on their wedding day?

No! Think of the kiss! Think of the kiss! There's still hope! There always is!

I've requested a framegrab in the framegrab shop for us to goggle at. But it doesn't really matter. You see, she's not not happy (note the double negative), she's staring at Fry while lost in romantic thoughts. Perhaps about how Fry wrote the love note... Perhaps how she felt when she first saw it... Perhaps the declaration of love from Fry that followed her finding it... Perhaps what was going to happen later that night... All of these things could have been making her think. And of course, Fry's not thinking, he's staring at Leela, mesmerized.

And for you real pessimists out there, think this: Fry is so enchanted by Leela right now that he acidentally fumbled with one of the vows. So, Leela got a little annoyed, but she knows how Fry can act around her. So everything's fine. That's the worst that could have happened.

Unless, of course, Fry got Leela pregnant...

And concerning the 'Futurama' comics. I'll ignore them. I've decided to wait and see what these 13 new episodes say happens. All power to the shippers...

The Queen is ALWAYS thanked before the Crown Prince...

 eek

...Okay, okay! (please don't hit me with a stick)

*ahem*....Thank you, Xanfor!  I couldn’t have done it without you!!

Which is true...and actually, I WOULD have thanked you, if I’d known for sure that you were just being the Robot Devil’s Advocate...at the time I was too busy slapping my forehead and wondering how to ask you politely if you’d ever talked to your doctor about antidepressants....  wink

Seriously, I had a *suspicion* that you might be just chumming the waters, but there was enough lingering doubt that I wondered if you were reading or listening to some heavy anti-shippers on a regular basis. And you don't want to go there. I’ve been there, done that, got the T-shirt, wore it out, got another one, wore it out as well, got a third one, wore it till it had bare patches, used it as a dustcloth, let my dog sleep on it for three years, and finally wadded it up and filed it under “N” for “Never again!”  It’s a stone drag, and I don’t advise anyone to follow my example.

So I’m glad you were just being a gadfly.  cool

**(Xanfor):
...My next movie is going to go deep into the characters and I want to know if there's anything I missed about them.**

Okay, but I may have to bow out of the discussion at times...I don’t want to use up all the character insights I’ve been saving for the latter half of my current epic tale!

**(Xanfor):
As proof of my optimism, see here at my future avatar...when Fry impulsively kissed her, did Leela become temporarily swept away? YES!**

I totally agree - the hand on his shoulder is a dead giveaway.  love

I suspect Leela’s thoughts went something like.... “Hey, what?! .... Oh, wait, this isn’t that bad...surprisingly...actually, to tell the truth, it’s really pretty g...HEY, wait a MINUTE!”

And then, the clobbering...

And while I’m at it, I may as well answer Arkan on this subject:

But then again, if you look just after the time skip...whilst Fry has a slight smile on his face, Leela doesn't...why isn't Leela happy on their wedding day?**

Maybe she’d just finished saying the vows she wrote that nobody was bothering to pretend to be interested in....  big grin

But you get extra credit for using “whilst,” and correctly, too!  It's been a long whilst since I saw that, yessir...

~~
On the subject of comics being cannon: IMHO, it doesn’t matter if the comics reference the cannon...it only matters if it happens the other way around.  I’m pretty sure we’re safe in considering the comics to be just a high-budget series of fanfic stories....
~~

**(Xanfor):
And I agree with JBERGES. Defending ship is better than abandoning ship.**

Jberges’ logic is unassailable.  Particularly since he’s always armed with a pun, and he’s not afraid to use it!  big grin

**(Xanfor):

Absolutely not!  No need to worry about a thing, Xander. Who could ever forget YOU?

Also, I'll take your explanation.
I think this is another of those 'solemn/moved rather than happy' moments, like at the end of The Sting.

Ahh, yes, the world will never forget this 'Xander'.

But perhaps someday, they will forgive.

I think we shippers should make that our logo framegrab. At least 'till a better one comes around. On the test thread they have the tradition that on every new page, a picture of someone called Phillip Seymore Hoffman is posted. I have no idea why, but still. Having visual proof is better than just quoting dialogue!

And now it's time for the shippy pic of the day!

This is, of course, where Fry axes Leela if she's jealous, and she says 'What? No... No, of course not.'

Not shippy enough? Ok then.

Excuse me if I have to stop now. Gotta save some for the other pages.    wink

Oh, and just out of sympathy, I erased this entire message and rewrote it.

Hating a fictional character because he's attempting to form a relationship with another fictional character that you've decided you're in love with is incredibly lame. Unless of course you don't realize that it's physically impossible for you to be with her, in which case it's just sad.

It gives (and will give if the rumored episodes and the movies are made to have them in relationships) us shippers something to look at and say "aww" to... No, it's only half as lame.

What puts you over the lameness bar is not hating Fry or wanting Leela, but spamming all over the board like a wind-up troll about it.

So let's do a breakdown...

Shippers - 25% lame (and aware of it)
You - 100% lame (and apparently too lame even to realize... )

Now, when you post again, I'll wager that you won't provide clever arguments, or even lame arguments, nor will you respond with a joke (let alone an actual witticism) or anything of value, but will probably just continue with your well-thought-out strategy of knee-jerk contradictions, loud denials, finger-givin' smilies, insults, and other tactics which would be lame at the average day-care center - which will confirm your position as the Lamest Lamer in Lamedom, once and for all.

Just watch.

That should be an award. I know there's the "worst PEELer" award, but I see a new potential rising here....

Because she isn't. The only person who can legitimately claim that Leela is 'their woman' is Greoning himself since he created her. You're just a fanboy with little grasp on reality.
