I can't belive I've never looked at this thread before.

I'm only a second-rate shipper. I look upon it with interest, but not in the level that I get completely obsessed with it. I don't really have emotions, you see.

And, from the last page, there are people who know the word Grok, and use it in casual coversation other than me? I don't know enough nerds in real life...

Dude, I was watching Knight Rider when it first came on network TV (1982, I believe).

One of the best-selling add-ons to Firebird back then was the 'KITT lightbar'.  I thought that it cheapened the car's appearance.

Yes, there was 'Evil KITT' (KARR), the evil Michael Knight and even the evil 18 wheeler that kicked KITT's ass.

I can't believe I actually enjoyed watching that show so much, but then I loved 'The A-Team', 'The Fall Guy', 'Simon and Simon' and 'Riptide' also.

Anyway, back to on-topic - One thing that people never seem to notice:  Bender is rarely cruel to Leela (exceptions:  ISTE and APTR.  In "Pharoah, Leela was in the wrong place at the wrong time); everybody else is fair game.  In some eps, Bender is actually kind and compassionate towards Leela (ALOHO, LH and he even tried to kill her in The Honking - remember he was suppose to kill his best friend).

My theory (and any shippy writer is welcomed to use this in a story) - The only emotions that Bender has ever felt is Leela's via the emotion chip.  He is the only cast member who really knows Leela's loneliness and feeling of worthlessness so he moderates his antisocial behavior towards her.  It may even be said that he's rather fond of her.

Of course there may be the fear of her sticking magnets on his head also...

The problem with that is Bender has voiced his emotions before. I forget which episode it was,  but I remember that Bender said something about how he lacks emotions and wishes he had them. "And that makes me sad." Altough the rest of that argument is totaly valid. (If I misread the quote and you mean that Bender has never had empathy for anyone else than just forget I ever posted this.)

Oh man, Ralph, I watched all those, but...Riptide!  Definitely my favorite.  I totally had a crush on Murray Bozinsky.  (What, you thought I was kidding about having a thing for nerds?)

I've waxed verbose on the subject of Bender and his fondnesses elsewhere, so I'll just say I agree he has a soft spot for Leela.  It may be as simple as the fact that she reminds him a bit of himself, what with her "in your face" approach to life and all, but it's definitely there (the chip incident reinforced it, IMHO).   :)

hahahahaha... You giving your age away if you remember those shows - all early to mid 80's.  Knight Rider is available on DVD and is shown sporaticly on Sci-Fi, A-Team is up to Season 4 on DVD (I have them, of course) and is shown late at night on TV Land, The Fall Guy, Simon and Simon and Riptide aren't in syndication and aren't available on DVD - yet. (God, I want 'The Fall Guy' on DVD so bad!  I mean, do you remember how good Heather Locklear looked in a pink bikini?)

I noticed that you did place Bender's compassion to Leela in your latest fic (even if he did it in an 'in your face' kind of way) - which completely surprised and irritated Leela.

Knight Rider and A-Team were a dear part of my young childhood. Granted, I'm talking about day time re-runs in the mid-90's. The point being, a talking car can be a very positive influnce on a kid. I love TV that blindsides you with a moral to the story.

Which is, I think, how he would go about it...but I still got a few complaints on my characterization of him there, and had to point to the various episodes to defend it.  Then again, some people think Bender was OOC in "Devil's Hands," which I don't get at all.  What, he can get all weepy over a turtle, but not apologize to Leela?

Let's ee, Bender and Leela bonded after ISTE, they approach Farnsworth together to get their jobs back in Cryonic Woman, she commanded the rescue mission to retrieve his brain in HHRHGB, Bender protected Leela and Fry from the Robot Mafia in BGM, Leela was Bender's manager in RB, they were very friendly in TROAE and was very protective of Leela when she got upset at the autograph signing in ALOHO.

I'm not quite the fan that you, Venus and Xanfor are, so those are the only ones that comes to mind, but I'm sure there are more instances where Bender was less antisocial towards Leela than the others.

Ah, you're right.  Heather Thomas was in 'The Fall Guy.  Heather Locklear was on 'T.J. Hooker'.  How could I forget Locklear starring against our favorite ham actor, William Shatner?

Either one looked pretty damned good in a bikini to a young 20-something guy.  (Hell, they look pretty damned good to a 45 year old guy...)

@ HS:

Pedro needs help.  I think Pedro is a nym-shifter that has been banned from PEEL at least twice in the past few months.  He'll cross the line and either Nix or Kryten will ban his account (they tend to be the mods that put up with the least crap).

@ Venus:

Danke.  I really need to broaden my computer knowledge horizons.  There are a couple of sites that I frequent that I may have to take over within the next year or so if I want them to continue, so that means learning PERL, HTML and some graphics types of programs.

Kelly knows HTML and Java, but she's pretty dedicated to her Christianity websites (she runs two) and she's not a good teacher (no flame, she just can't communicate how to do things well).

Her staunch religious beliefs are amazing.  She'd get along well with TMC, VF and Nix.  That Irish-Protestant thing she has, y'know.

Hope you get the Dell soon.

"I only meant to annoy you."

Etc.

Hmm, I never noticed all those times. I always thought that Bender and Leela had a special bond simply because they are the only ones in the gang that are from the time period and therefore don't have to have everything explained to them.

I realize I have been remiss in not mentioning that Venus's pictures are Fan-Shippen-Tastic.  They are indeed, Fan-Shippen-Tastic, and in honor of their Fan-Shippen-Tasticness, I shall not even mention that I wonder if it ought to be spelled "Fan-Shippin-Tastic," ain't I the restrained one though.  Their Fan-Shippen-Tastichood is so readily apparent, perhaps I can be forgiven for not pointing it out - rather the equivalent of pointing out the coldness of ice cubes or the fluffiness of a long-haired kitten.  However, it would be entirely inappropriate to forgive me for such a blatant oversight, and hence all thread members are commanded to hold a grudge against me for the rest of their natural lives and at least two eofrastmenoids of their afterlife.  After which, their afterbrains in the afterlife will be too afterbusy to maintain any afterthoughts on the aftersubject of afterlife aftergrudges.

That said, let me point out the Fan-Shippen-Tastic nature of Venus' art in general, which she does on a computer and therefore has no problem posting it to PEEL, unlike her decrepid online friends who work in the outmoded aftermode of pencil and paper and fear that hooking up the scanner that is sitting around collecting dust will cause the Dust Collection Society to issue a contract for their deaths, or immediate dusting, whichever promises to be more painful.  Said aged and bitter friends are blue with envy (having surpassed green several months before) at her obvious stinking talent and feel it's not enough that someone so young should be a Fan-Shippen-Tastic writer AND a Fan-Shippen-Tastic artist AND technologically proficient enough to produce such lovely visions.  Such grumbling, joyless, envious people might possibly forgive her for being so young, skilled, and also a good and friendly person if she would, in fact, not hold the well-deserved grudge the codgerified one deserves and accepts this bizarre rant as the compliment it is apparently intended to be.

Ralph, you are correct, 1982 was the first season's appearance.  :)(goliath is the 18-wheeler) and you forgot about the red Buicks that were radio controlled in season three that had missiles (season pilot episode) that totally destroyed KITT...They henceforth decided one screen was better on the dash... BACK to the correct topic once again, yes, Bender does feel compassion, but I don't think he wants his crewmates to think him a pansy... I think somewhere in that pimp-like lifestyle he lives, there's a Bender that can love one fembot forever until the end of time.

Is this not the great irony of the series? Bender SEEMS to be totaly self-centered egotistical robut. However when push comes to shove, he cares very deeply about both Fry and Leela. Look how far Bender falls when Fry says that he's willing to room without Bender.

Zoidy, you just gave me a great idea for a pun... Thank you!

Now, seeing as how Shiny has written our constitution, I've gone about our anthem:

The Ballad of PEELified Shippers

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
of the fans of a hopeful love.
That started from this modest show
of which we can not have enough.

About Fry, who is not the smartest man,
and Leela, who's brave and sure.
For whom the people of which we sing now,
joined a three hour forum, a three hour forum.

The going started getting rough,
Our dreams were twist and tossed.
If not for the courage of this group of fans,
the 'Ship would be lost, the 'Ship would be lost.

The show's once again setting ground on shore, on cable nonetheless,
with Venus, and the shippers, too,
Hopeless, and Shiny,
PCC Fred,
Xan, Arkan, and Prof. Zoid!
Are here on Futurama's PEEL!

Now this is the tale of our union,
we're here for a long, long time.
We have to make the best of things;
it's an uphill climb.

The Shiny and the Venus, too,
will do their very best
to make details of this peculiar 'Ship
obvious to the rest.

No doubt, no dispair, no depression,
we're as happy as can be.
And unlike for distrusters of romance,
the truth is plain to see.

So join us here when you can, our friends,
you're at least sure for a smilet,
as we count down to the show's return,
the secondary pilot!

And, the shippy pic of the day...

(Leela's face: Priceless)

And finally, the (shippy) quote! (Thought I was going to forget, didn't you?    ;) )

Oh, I'm all for geekdom, even over-the-top poetic geekdom (just check the Futurama poetry thread for extensive evidence against me).  I was just honestly surprised to find that the thread on intellectual shipper discussions had turned into an invariable fan guild of sorts.  Case in point, comparing the ship in this thread to my recommended FDA daily allowance is like slamming the QE2 into a kayak.

Also, I think it's keeping the shippy writers from writing fanfic, which I'm against :p

Hey, we just try to spark discussions. Nodody's brought any here in a while. We had a very nice one not too long ago, about Bender and compassion. But I started this thread sort of in error. It's become more of 'The Official Thread of the PEELian Shipper's Front' sort of thing. Of course, if anyone wants to start or bring over a discussion, by all means do so. In the meantime, I just have a responsiblity to keep this thread from shuffing off it's mortal coil, falling down the summary page and joining the choir invisible.  ;)

It's not an error.  It's just...y'know, hard to be intelligent & long-winded (& serious) ALL the time.

Besides, it's "The Intelligent, Long-Winded Shipper Discussion Thread," not "The Intelligent, Long-Winded Discussion Thread for Shippers."  As long as we're intelligent and long-winded in general, we qualify...yeah, that's the ticket.

But maybe, instead of just linking to long shippy posts, we should copy them over into this one as well as linking.  Then we'd have actual shippy content here more often.

And I guess we could stop getting off on early 80's television tangents... :guilty:

Yeah, I'm guilty as charged  :D Linking is great and so is Xanfor's poem. I'd go off on my own poem, but most of the time, I suck at it... I did however, write one short poem in my Fanfic thread...but it's not incredibly shippy...

I've gotten to thinking about what JBERGES and Shiny said, and I've decided that the main problem with this thread is that it's purpose is to bring in conversations from other threads. And that's hard. So here's what we do, and it's what I've done in the past. If you post something that starts or continues a long-winded shipper discussion, cut and paste the following at the end of your post:

Then, if you can, post a link to the discussion or possible discussion-to-be on this thread. That way this thread can be for our discussion and it's proper use. Of course, this is just a suggestion, all prepackaged and ready to use. But feel free to link in any manner you see fit. It's the 'Ship that counts!
The intelligent part? That was mainly to keep spammers away and the clientele rational.

And my anthem's not a peom, silly people. (Although it is good stuff  ;) ) It's a ballad. Haven't you ever seen 'Gilligan's Island'?

The Ballad of Gilligan's Island

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip,
that started from this tropic port,
aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
the skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day,
for a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
the Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle.
With Gilligan, and the Skipper too,
the millionaire, and his wife,
the movie star,
the professor and Mary Ann!
Are here on Gilligans Isle!

Now this is the tale of our castaways,
they're here for a long, long time.
They'll have to make the best of things;
it's an uphill climb.

The first mate and his skipper, too,
will do their very best,
to make the others comfortable
in a tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights, no motor cars,
not a single luxury.
Like Robinson Caruso,
it's primitive as can be.

So join us here each week my friends,
you're sure to get a smile,
from seven stranded castaways,
here on Gilligan's Isle.

So my version would be 'The Ballad of PEELified Shippers'!  :laff:

Now your cutting deep, I saw it for what it was the first time.

As far as this thread goes, I always saw it as a meeting place for shippers. On the other hand talking about Futurama again would be nice...

But did you have to post THE WHOLE THEME SONG, Xanster?  Now the memory center of my brain hurts...just from scrolling past it. :hmph:

And now, in the interests of upping the ship content of the thread marginally, I offer the following:

There once was a fellow named Fry
Who loved Leela, of only one eye
To his suit, she was cool
And to some she seemed cruel,
But she fell for the chap, by and by.
