A thread similar to this was posted by some guy on The Hip Joint. No one really paid attention to it but i found it kinda interesting. Some people don't believe Leela is a mutant and some people don't believe that she isn't. Regardless, if it turned out that she was a mutant how do you think she would react to the news? How do you think the others would react? And just in general how do you think the ep would go? Would her parents (if she actually found them)accept her or regect her? or whatever else any of you can think of to post.

I've never bought the fact that she's an alien.

There's some proof of the mutant theory in "I Second That Emotion" her parents are possibly seen in a scene, in the sewers.  In "How Hermes ..", there's an x-ray shot, and she looks pretty much haman in that.

A) I'm not committing myself to either viewpoint just yet.  I'm staying with my wait-and-see approach.

B) Paul, being stoned doesn't involve alcohol.  Being stoned involves Pot, weed, Mary Jane, whatever you call it.

I think Leela's mutant heritage could be a downfall for the show.  Perhaps "anticlimactic" is a better word.  I mean, she's been searching for her home for her entire life, and all of a sudden someone says "Silly girl, you don't come from a distant planet, you come from a shit-hole on Earth!"

It depends on which part of the world you come from Nixxy, over here stoned means/meant drunk, although your meaning is probably correct in this day and age  ;)

I agree.

If Leela was a mutant it would ruin her character. Well, it would ruin her character for ME. How can she be an outsider, if she isn't alien. If she is a mutant, well that's just another kind of human.

Besides, she haven't searched that extensively for her homeplanet yet. There was "A Bicyclops Built For Two", and a third of "AOI II", but that's it. They haven't emptied that well yet, and I would like some more episodes about it.

For what it's worth: IMO, she is an alien. She said so herself, and her physicals would have picked it up, if she was a mutant.

But in Birdbot of Ice-Catraz, Bender identified her as Human after his second enforced reboot.

It's not so much "ruining" her character as it is nullifying both her outsider status on Earth and removal from her birthright-society.  Fry is permanently removed from his normal succession in society by 1000 years.  If (and when, god forbid) Leela turns out to be a mutant, it'd be like Fry realizing that he was actually born in 2900's but was sent backwards through time only to find a place (and time) to call home 1000 years later.  That's how I see it, anyway.

My feelings exactly - maybe not ruining the show but definitely an anticlimax.  :nono:

Wow you people are stubborn. Look there has never been evidence that she is an alien. Just cause she has one eye does not make her an alien. As for her being a mutant ruiniung the character I do not think so, some seem to believe this wold degrade her as being a lesser species but the point of mutation is to provide an adaption to survie better. Lets face it more and more computers are being relied on now and you do not need depth perception to read the sceens. Thus she may be a higher evolution than humans.

Another point cyclops' are interwoven it to the mythology of practically every race on Earth from the Greeks to the Japanese. So we might be able to assume she is a more ancient race than humans , that could mean she could still search out her heratige but stay on Earth.

Well if you don't agre that's your opinion but be warned I'm a crack shot so if you try to hit me woth rocks I'll get you back 100 fold.  :finger:

I think Bender just recognized her shape as being human. If he was programmed to recognize Cyclops, he'd probably have loaded that language. IMO, ofcourse.

Hmm, ruined may have been a bit too strong, I can see that. But it will make her character a lot less intriguing. Part of Leela's fascinating character is her outcast/outsider-status. Being the only member of an unknown species, who lives on Earth gives her some nice traits for future stories, and alternate points of view. Discovering that she is just a twist of nature, well lets just say that's not my idea of a good character development.

And I don't think they've made enough stories about Leela's search for her homeplanet, to actually make her find it already.

I don't get it she'll be less of an outcast because she is a mutant  :nono:  people stair at her it the streets because she has one eye, they have no idea she is an alien or a mutant unless she tells them.

Oh and just so I know am I the only one who supports the mutanat theory

Well actually, except for a select few, the humans on earth don't accept her at all. To them she's nothing more then a circus freak. Remember in The Cyberhouse Rules right after she got her surgery? "Nobody stared at me, or avoided staring at me, or tried to burn me." So if she found out she was a mutant and instead of being alone in the galaxy she was actually alone in the universe she would feel very cut off. As an alien she could at least console herself with the thought that somewhere she was normal, but as a mutant she's shunned by her own people. Her status as an outsider would grow not diminish.

That being the case, shouldn't the word Humanoid have been shown and not Human, especially where Leela is concerned.

The aliens we've seen on Futurama is widely different in build and size. An explanation could be the programmers at Moms Friendly Robotfactory simply programmed Bender with shape- and size-recognition. A shape/size for every known memberspecies of DOOP, various animals, etc. As Leela is the only one of her kind on Earth, they wouldn't be aware of this option.

When Bender saw the shape and size of Leela, the closest match was with a Human, and he loaded the appropriate language.

Apparently the only thing separating the Human species from the Cyclopian species is the eye thing.

But I could be wrong about the whole thing.  :) Future episodes will show.

Well, as long as we're theorizing...Bender's operating system might have recognized Leela and remembered that she speaks "Human".

Well that don't help noe since omicronions, Trisolions and practically every species met speaks human (which since the are from New New York will be English but I suppose it will vary if your watching in another country.)

Where did you hear that Teral?

I kinda go with the Mutant camp here but alien is good too, just as long as the females of her species don't eat their mate after fertilization.

She's perfect either way.

Ahhh Leela
