Title: For the record...
Post by: TheLampIncident on 05-24-2004 15:07
...does anyone in here still own a record player? I got one back in November with speakers at a Salvation Army real cheap...it's obviously outdated, but I still think it's a good medium for music. Especially because you can play the stuff at the wrong speed. Also, there's plenty of stuff only available on vinyl(especially when you're into the crazy stuff I like). I have a few split 7" records I like to blast when I'm doing homework or something...very cool.

No, but my parents do though. they're thinking of getting a Minidisc player to record them onto...

I have one! I love it so much, it's very cool. It also includes an 8-track player, and cassettes, and a radio, and... well, it has most everything.  :D
I have a few Beatles records I like to play on it too, I have a vinyl copy of Abbey Road.

I still carry my boom box to school on and off.

It's kinda heavy because it runs on 8 9volt batteries or something.

But it's awsome, I use it at home to sometimes when I'm not at my computer.

My dad has a jukebox that takes singles. It is one fine piece of audio equipment!

My father used to have one, but he gave it away to one of his friends when we got a boombox.  :p

I use my parents' one on the hi-fi   :) We've got a lot of records, and my mum still buys LPs now  :D I do plan on buying my own one someday though.

I recommend it. My whole system only cost me 12 bucks at the thrift store! Hot diggity damn, that's the best deal I ever got.

My collection's not too big so far though:

Toxic Narcotic/A Global Threat split 7"
Minor Threat's first demo tape(7" )
Tragedy/Totalitar split 7"
Strong Intention/Solid Decline split 7"
Botch - An Anthology of Dead Ends(10" )
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Altered States of America(10" - white vinyl: only 100 pressed!)
Capitalist Casualties - Disassembly Line(LP)
Bad Brains - s/t(LP)

As you can see, I mainly like to use my record player for the small stuff. I have the Dropdead/Totalitar split on CD and it's only 9 minutes long. Looking back, I should have gotten the 7" instead. Also, if you look in page 12 of the "What did you buy today?" thread, I've got a few more records coming.

I'm a big Thorens fan.  I have a TD-150 mk II back in New Jersey, and a TD-280 mk II here in California, that I found through an ad a few months ago for just a hundred bucks.  It sounds great but it needs some work.  I don't have the money for a real classy setup right now, so I'm running it through a crappy kit built solid state amp and some OK speakers, but it's just sitting on a table.  I need to build a plinth for it.  I also have a DD turntable, a Technics or something, in the garage.  Someone gave it to me.  I need to fix the ground, but I'm not gonna use it because it's not as nice as my Thorens.  Real rumbly.

I have a real big record collection, built on my father's collection going back to the '60s.  And I pick up two dollar records at the used place just all the time.

I have 2 old record players down in my basement. One of them i actually have hooked up and play all my parent's old records from the 60s 70s and 80s. I swear, its so much fun.

I've got two players near me. I own a "normal" Pioneer PL225 player and my parents have a Thorens TD318. Every now and then I play some of the old records from my parents (60's - 80's).

Although we had one in the house, I only ever used the cassette deck on it.
It's gone now and my parents have a dire taste in music.

I have 11 of my all-time favourite albums on vinyl, most bought from this awesome record trading shop in Byron. However, they're all up at my parent's place, seeing I don't actually own a turntable myself.

Records? Now this is a thread I will love!
I have an record player: A new one, since my last one - a some decades old record player - got damaged.     :hmpf:
The new record player is good as well, but he has not the charme of the older players.

Beside of that I own dozends of old-styled casettes, 45rpm records, 33rpm records and even some oldie old-old 78rpm records.
I guess by now I own more than 80 records (vinyl and shellack).
I have some CDs as well, but just because it's not a good idea to carry records around all the time. Broken CDs are easily to replace, but old vinyls or even shellacks - ha! - not!
Most of my records collection is by Herman's Hermits, Armanda Lear, John Lennon, Frank Sinatra and Schneewitchen - na, not the fairy tale "Schneewitchen", but the feminist band     :p.
There are other bands as well, often very rare records. (Not realy worthful, but rare somehow.)

Edit:
"You may call me a dreamer, but ..." I think old vinyl records do smell far better than CDs. Really.
Title: Re: For the record...
Post by: TheLampIncident on 05-24-2004 17:57
Strange as this may sound, I don't think I've smelled my vinyls. I don't think the CDs have a smell...it's all in the booklet. New CD booklet ranks up there with new T-shirt as one of the best non-food smells ever. I'll go give my vinyls a whiff...

And the winner is...my Bad Brains LP! Wow that one smelled good.

I have one (or rather, my parents have one). It doesn't seem to work as well as it used to. Lemme tell ya, listening to 'O Fortuna' in alternating slow motion is one of the funniest thing I ever heard. My parents have dozens of records up in the atic. I had a look through them, but alas, many of them suck. I did find In-a-gadda-da-vida, though! Awwwww yeah.

My parents have one in the basement that we tried to get working not too long ago. We bought a new needle and everything, but sadly, it is stuck on high speed (forgive me for not knowing the specific speed), and the knob to change it was broken.  The box full of records is still down there, though (lots of Beatles, and others along those lines). It's too bad, I would have loved to listen to the classics in their original format.  Not enough to pay to have the record player fixed, though.

High speed? You mean maybe 45 rpm? In that case you could still listen to 45 rpm records with that player.
(The 45's are mostly the smaller vinyls with just one song on each side).

Not only do they smell better! In comparison to CD they also sound much better!
I know that a CD has a better quality, but a good old LP puts you in a complete other mood.

As I said before: My (parent's) collection (about 80LP's and 150 Singles) are from the 60's up to the 80' containing early albums of the BeeGees, Beatles, Stones, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Kiss, ... , Boney M., Baccara, ABBA, more Disco sounds of the 70's, ..., AC/DC, Dire Straits, ..., ModernTalking (http://www.k-hausmann.de/webspace/smiley/barf.gif) and much German stuff like Peter Maffay, or Marianne Rosenberg.

Schneewitchen mostly sings in German. Ballads and rocks. Their most popular song is "Der Mann der ist ein Lustobjekt" (= "The Man' is a Lust-Toy" ).
They are feministic, but have found a good way to make their songs hear-able for women and men.

Random question: Anyone else ever did listen to the beautiful sound of an old 78 rpm record? Those which were made from "Schellack".
Or do you even own one?
I guess I have at least 8 of them. One of them is from Mantovani, another one from Duke Ellington.

Yep! I got a record player for my 21st birthday from my Dad. I have been collecting vinyls from my favourite bands for some time now, and most of them are usually rare pieces. Unfortunately for me I have to decide whether or not to play them should I ever want to re-sell them. But I doubt I will. Is it cool to say Records are cool? I think so!

I just dug all my dad's 33s and 45s outta the attic today.  There is a lot of OLD stuff, but some 70s rock also.  I don't have a record player though, I'm gunna need to invest in that one.  My dad also had a lot of really good 8-tracks.  I dug that out too, but the player doesnt wanna play, so I'm gunna have to see about getting it fixed.

I run a Grado ZF3 cartridge on mine, because I can't afford a Shure V15VxMR, but it sounds really mellow.

My record collection has a lot of jazz from the '60s like Thelonius Monk and John Coltrane, and Modern Jazz Trio, some fusion with Jaco Pastorius on the bass, plus a load of old classic rock like the Rolling Stones and Crosby Stills and Nash and the Doors, plus current stuff I've bought like the Hellacopters, plus some old bay area hardcore and death metal LPs and 7"s that my friend gave me because he used to run a label here, plus all my cheapo used acquisitions, which is mostly old metal like Nazareth, Saxon, AC DC, Rainbow, etc.  It's a good group, I think.

I've got my trusty old Sansui SR-525 direct drive.  It's from the mid 70's, but my cartridge is a Shure M-44E that dates back to the late 60's.  Amazingly I can still get stylii for it.

Yeah, I have a turntable. It's a Sony something something. It's a pretty good quality turntable, but no nifty 'DJ' features. It's pluged into my computer at the moment, which means I can record stuff off it, though I rarely bother.
I have about 50 LPs and about 15 singles, most of which are battered and smell of cigies and weed (i.e. bought of a nice guy in the student union for very cheep). I do have a couple of nice colectables, e.g. my Kraftwerk (~£40) and a white stripes single that is worth unmentionably too much, as well as a set of flaming lips picture disks.

I've got a nice Dual 502 from the late 1970s that's in great working condition.

I also have a Gerrard from God-only-knows-when that accepts stacks of records to be played one after the other.  It even plays 16 and 78 RPM as well as the standard 33 and 45.  The thing still works like a charm too (though I never stack more than one record on the platter at a time, cause of the vinyl on vinyl scratching that occurs).

My neighbour has some really old turntables - one is an old hand-crank job with a brass horn for the sound.  It's a real beauty.

I just checked the bill of it. They bought it in the end of 1986, in addition to a yamaha A-1020 ampilifer, a Denon DCD 1500B CD-player, an onkyo TA-2330B Tape-deck, an Onkyo TI-4250 Tuner and Denon Hi-End Speakers complete for about 6000 DM.

I think when it comes to high-end products Thorens record-players are famous in Germany. Isn't Thorens a German manufacturer with factories all over the world, I don't know

I’ve got a Technics direct drive linear tracking something-or-other. It’s tacked on to a cassette-based system that I intended to upgrade, but never did. The speakers really don’t do it justice, but they have sounded a bit better after I replaced the bass/midrange drivers (necessitated by an unfortunate incident involving an ex work colleague’s experimental amp and a Eurythmics CD).

My late parents’ auto-changer is still sitting around too, but they never got the add-on speaker to make it stereo. I think that plays just about every speed, including the old 78s tucked away in the loft.

My record playing system(a whopping $12 at the Salvation Army):

Some colored records I have:

Nice player. And nice coloured vinyls. Nothing beats a good coloured vinyl. I have this a red copy of U2's Under A Blood Red Sky, but I'm scared to play it. Not much need to anyway, as I own it on CD and on regular vinyl.

And what's up with the 6" baby? Nice.
Title: Re: For the record...
Post by: TheLampIncident on 12-26-2004 18:57
The 6" plays at 33 speed. Side A has two songs, side B has just one. Both sides play for about three minutes.

It's a good way to release something if you don't have enough money for studio time, and it's a good way for the broke fan to buy something.

Of course now I feel retarded because I got some CD by the same band that had those three tracks on it...

I'd also like to note that the white one is a 10", and I think there's only 100 pressed in that color(unless they made more).

We moved to a new house, so I put some effort into setting up my system so it sounds better.  Isolate the turntable from speaker vibrations, put the speakers a decent distance apart... it sounds great.  Now all I need is a tube amp.  Give me money.

We've got an old Panasonic something or other. And I've got a whole slew of old punk vinyl. (Pistols, Clash, Crass compilations, GBH, Social D and craploads more) Plus I've got all my Dad's old Herb Alpert records and a bunch of my Grandfather's old Guy Lombardo records.
My fave piece of vinyl right now is a sci-fi theme music album with the likes of The Revenge of the Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Mole People, This Island Earth, It Came from Outer Space, The Incrdible Shrinking Man and others on it.
I've also got some pretty cool old children's records (Peter and the Wolf, Mary Poppins, Treasure Island, Horton Hatches the Egg and Other stories, etc)
Neil Young sez there are some nuances and bits of grunge heard on vinyl that just aren't captured on the ultra clean production qualities of modern CDs.
I've even got some vinyl that I had a hand in myself.

Apparently.

Face it, we were around when the first wave of Punk came along; that doesn't exactly make us babes in the woods.

What's really cool are some of the old 78s I inhereted from my grandparents and from my dad.  The music isn't cool but it reminds me of folks I miss.

Believe it or not, there are some "purists" that think vinyl albums sound better than digital CD's.  The analog "records" have a "warmer" more robust sound that the sterile CD's comprised with ones and zeros.
AND... you can't play a CD in reverse to get all those subliminal messages... "Paul is dead"

Instead you just rip it and reverse the track in any media editor, plenty of free ones (Or even Sound Recorder i think).

I definitely have to agree with mom on this one.

I think the sound of records have a much fuller and warmer sound that CDs. Not to mention the little pops and scratches add so much to the listening experience.

I just recently picked up "Chutes Too Narrow" by the Shins on Vinyl (which I also have on CD) and I like the sound of the record MUCH more. Some bands and songs seem to fit into the vinyl catagory better than others, and the Shins is one of them.

In theory, I would agree with Mom Rules. In theory, Vinyl sounds better (it's because there is compression or digitalization a on vinyl and thus no loss).
But: Unless you have extremely good HiFi-equipment (read: hilariously expensive)and scratch-free records, the difference is hardly noticable.
What I like about vinyl is that it looks a lot better, the packaging is usually nicer to look at and it's cheaper too (at least here).

Plus you can get some sweet deals there, like 1000 Hurts by Shellac. If you buy the vinyl version - which is the same price as the CD version - you also get a digital accessory. That happens to be the CD of 1000 Hurts.

I think we covered this issue on the first page(s) of this thread, and everyone agrees, unless they are ignorant convenience-whores.

By the way- I own a perfect, scratch-free vinyl of Roxette's Look Sharp. Oh yeah!

What they say!

But even if the equiptment isn't that expensive and produces a lot of these scratching sounds, vinyls are still nice to listen to, in my opinion.

Compared to any digitial media like CDs, DVDs or mp3s, records as well as movies and photos on traditional 35mm films are superior for historical and longvity reasons.

No one can tell if CDs or mp3 are still readable in a not too distant future.
The technology will be much further developed by then and it could happen that digital media like we have today isn't readable anymore, while all you need to play an old vinyl is a spinning plate and a needle, or to watch some 35mm films a light to hold it against.

I can't tell whether vinyl sounds better or not. My record player cost me $12 at the Salvation Army, turntable, speakers and all. It sounds like shit. I always end up downloading mp3s of stuff I own on vinyl. Hopefully with some new equipment, I could tell the difference. I just like the concept of it. It fascinates me that vinyl + needle = music. It's also a lot more collectible. Colored vinyl owns everything(see earlier on this page).

All mine are black, apart from one:

Probably not the sort of thing many people here would collect though.

A picture disc, eh? I've seen those before. I don't care for them very much.

Do they sound any different from normal records?

It’s hard to give an objective answer based on this one, as it’s a recording of an interview and there’s a lot of background noise (talking etc.). At times it’s hard to make out what Kate’s saying: don’t think it’s due to the medium, just the live recording situation. But it is a bit of a ‘fan only’ item, I admit.

I saw an E.T. picture disc once.

I have some cool coloured vinyl.  I have the limited white vinyl of Guitar Wolf's UFO Romantics, the transparent red vinyl of the Hellacopters' High Visibility, and North of America's Brothers, Sisters, which is some weird pink marbled shit.  By the way, that record sucks because it's on like 90 gram vinyl and it's so thin I have to put an extra felt mat under it or the tonearm hits the lifter when I try to play it.

Vinyl is popular nowadays, but it's hard to find good pressings.  Especially for the kind of DIY shit Lamp listens to.  I got a box full of Bay Area hardcore 7"s and the pressings all suck ass.  That's why I'm so pleased with the Devil Dogs Saturday Night Fever 180 gram vinyl reissue I just got.  Crypt is a label that knows how to press a goddamn record.

Despite the fact that it's only a 90 grams pressing, the sole fact that you have a North of America album already rocks (and so does the album).

I don't know anything about quality of pressing, all I know is...

Armageddon Shop (http://www.armageddonshop.com/)

Specializes in vinyl. Rare vinyl. Oh yes.

This thread motivated my lazy ass to finally get that new stylus and balance the tonearm.  Now my turntable sounds much better.  Whee.

Spiff: that album does rock.  What the hell time signature is the chorus to "Wet To Dance" in?  7/4? 13/8?

Have you ordered from this place before?  Are they reliable?  Because I found some hot shit on their search engine.  Stuff that goes for $40 on eBay for like eight bucks.  Is it for real?

The way I play it, it's actually a 4/4 (up to the chorus, which has those strange pauses (I wish I knew the correct term for this)), but bass drum and snare are mostly 1/16-notes, so it sounds kind of confusing. But just try listening to the cymbal and count it, it works.
Also, because I'm curious now, I'm gonna try and tab it (partly) once I get home.

And: Being what could very well be the board's number one North of America fan (I own all of their releases, including a limited version of Elements Of An Incomplete Map Pt. II, yay), it's always cool for me to see that other people have actually heard about them.
Also, if you like North of America: Pay attention to your local clubs, NoA have split up or are on hiatus (nobody knows, apparently not even they do), and two of them have formed a band called The Holy Shroud which seems to be awesome. I think they're touring soon, so if you have the chance to see them live, do it. If they're anything like NoA on stage, you'll be in for some fun.

I've never actually ordered from the site, but I've been in the store and bought stuff a couple times, they have a very good selection. As far as shipping? I have no idea.

You know, I think I can actually find out your answer. Give me some time.

The chorus is what I was asking about.  The weird pauses are because the time changes to 7/4, but it's weird phrasing.  It goes in and out of syncopation.

How often do you go to the brick and mortar store?  Pick me up those Sonic's Rendezvous CDs and I'll pay you.

Oh, in that case I misunderstood...
Actually, I must admit I never actually tried to find out what beat that actually is, because when I play it, I just play by heart and it sounds okay, I never bothered with tabbing it in the first place and thus avoided the whole beat-issue.
But after having tried it, I would rather say 13/8. At least tabbing the toms in the chorus and then finding out the speed of the song matched the song it when played along, and the tabs even made sense.
However, that probably wasn't very precise, so I'm not sure whether I'm correct here.
Up untill now, I was too lazy to listen to the hi-hat, which might be a great help here. I just listened to the toms and counted.

My parents' version of Tommy has sides A and D on one disc and sides B and C on the other.  Is this arrangement normal for a double album?
Title: Re: For the record...

That’s the legacy of auto-changers: play side A, then the second record drops down and plays side B. You turn the stack over, and repeat with sides C and D.

email me and I'll send you that Devil Dogs lp.  I finally remembered the title, it's Big Beef Bonanza.

Done and done.  The record I bid on was the 1998 issue of Sonic's Rendezvous Band's "Sweet Nothing" on red vinyl.  Only 500 pressed.

So I ordered some stuff via the form on their website, and I never heard from them.  I guess it's not for real.

I've been too busy to listen to records lately.  I like to play them when I'm alone in the house, so I can turn up the volume as loud as I like.  But I'm out of the house most of the time nowadays.  I need to get up to San Francisco and buy some records.  That'll motivate me.

Here's my small vinyl collection. I play them on my parents vinyl player, and record them to minidisc. They're all rare Prodigy vinyls, nice collectors items...

So I want to get a tube amp to run my turntable through.  I'm looking for an ST-70.  Anyone here into tube amps?  I'm sort of over my head, and I don't really know how to avoid getting ripped off.

I got this in today.  Man, it's awesome.  Now I finally can listen to "City Slang" on my turntable.  The record is cool transparent red vinyl, but it's very thin, like 50 gram or something.  At least it's not warped.

I was this close (::holds fingers close together: :) to getting the self-titled album by The Stone Roses a few weeks ago, but alas, it had been snagged by some turdburglar while I amassed some finances.
