Well, on the first pages of the first topic, it was fairly easy... Unfortunately, I was unaware of its existance and therefore, I could not pitch in... But now I only recognize a couple in each quiz, and they're always guessed by the time I finally drag my digital ass in here...

This quiz was easier when we had the listening thread, as you could equate covers with the posters listening habits.  Nowadays, it's much more about skill, knowledge, and how much of a music-geek you are.

Considering my favourite book and movie is High Fidelity, I think that says a lot.

Tikka: You don't need a scanner, just grab the covers off of Amazon, or the band's discography on their official website (which it's more than likely that they'll have). Plus, there's always Google.

Then, edit the covers with whatever image program floats your boat (there's plenty of free ones which will do such simple stuff as this) to remove text and re-size them to uniformity. You're free after that to upload your choices to your webspace. Don't have webspace? Get some webspace!

Yeh, my only problem is the webspace one.  It's hard to find space without a bandwidth cap, and you don't want people guessing at little red x's.

Just because you have a 'girlish folk' album there doesn't excuse the excess of heavy 'rock'. To be fair, I wouldn't complain if it wern't for the fact that I hate that type of music. Anyway: I have no Idea what any of those albums are, I'm just gonna wait for the next one.

People post albums from their personal collections a lot.  So there's a theme to most of the lists.  This one seems to have a pretty good amount of variety in terms of genres; I guess it's all vaguely "alternative" from the pop music perspective, and it seems to all be American and from the '90's, but that's what's out there.  Now, if I get my chance, I'll show you variety.  I got in too late on this one, though.

I know, but punk, hardcore, emo-core, industrial, industrial metal, noisecore, metal, and rock are all basically the same thing. I mean I like that sort of music, but I dont know much about it. Indie albums would be nice, maybe folk, some of the less obscure stuff. And I know that Depeche Mode, etc. aren't that kind of music, but the majority are.

I've collected a set of covers, so if there ever is a pass, I can provide them. They are not too easy, but not too hard, and there are a few that Love_For_Leela might get. Ok, maybe not.

The problem though is that I need someone to host them up, as I don't really have webspace with lots of bandwidth. But that's easy enough, hosting up 10 jpg's isn't too much of a stress.

Jeez, 9 hints?  Are these too hard?  I tried to pick some easy ones my first time out.

2 is a discography CD from a seminal early hardcore band from New Jersey.  I've mentioned them by name in the music reviews thread, and the cover contains an obvious visual clue.

3 might be tough, it's a gutbucket Mississippi blues album by a very dirty blues singer, and it came out last year I think.

5 is the debut full-length album by a punk(ish) band from LA with an Irish singer.  Who used to be in Fastway.

6 is by a rock band from Finland, but it's not as obscure as that makes them sound.  One of their songs has been used in a Toyota Camry commercial in the US (the one where it's driving backwards).  These guys have also been mentioned by me in the music reviews thread.

7 is an album I haven't listened to, but it's my buddy's favourite album cover.  They're sort of goth, I think, this guy listens to Joy Division and Morrisey. 

8 is the only one I thought would be really tough.  It's by one of John Zorn's really experimental bands.

9 - come on, people, this is one of the classic Jazz/Funk albums.  It's by an artist who has a piece on the radio in Vice City.

10.  Now you're messin' with a son of a bitch.

12 is not a Pogues album, but that is Shane MacGowan on the right.

Ah.  Well, the latest round of hints contains more than enough information to identify all 3 albums just using Google for a few seconds, but that's not worth any points.  But no one's going to get this for real unless they're a John Zorn fan, and it looks like there aren't any around here, so we can consider that one closed now, unless someone who hasn't read David A's spoiler wants to keep guessing.  The other two are still open, and hopefully someone knows them.  Without cheating.

The cover art for this Zorn album is sort of rare because it was so controversial a lot of stores pulled it from the shelves.  So it only saw limited release before it was packaged in the "black box" with Leng Tch'e so no one would have to look at the cover art for either.  So the art may not be easy to find online, but it would be recognisable to anyone who knew the story.  It's still in the inserts in the black box, which is the version I have.  The black box was released fairly widely; any record store with an experimental section will have it.

This album also has a big punk following because Japanese hardcore vocalist Yamatsuka Eye sings on it.  He's sort of the G.G. Allin of Japan.  He used to have really violent shows; once he cut a cat in half on stage with a chainsaw, and once he demolished the stage with a backhoe. 

Anyway, I'm starting to feel bad because these covers may have been a little too hard.  I thought 7 would go pretty quick, though.  Aren't there a lot of goth/industrial fans around?  I thought that was what nerds listened to.  Still, I'm satisfied with the results.  9 solutions, 8 different people; I think that shows I picked a good variety of albums and genres.  But it's been almost 24 hours since I posted the last round of hints, and more hints aren't gonna make this go faster.  You can't get blood from a stone.  So if everybody gives up, in a couple hours I can just declare Otis the winner and get some new covers.  Unless you want to keep going.

#3 a band coming from tempe, arizona which plays alternative rock. their name probably won't please the vegetarians as it contains the evil word. they toured with nirvana. this is their 2000 album.

Well, techincally, it's eggs's turn. But if he passes, you can post your quiz. What you do is this: go to an internet site like HMV.com, bestbuy.com, or any other site that has cd covers. Then, you photoshop out the names. Then, you just upload them to your site.

I (temporarily) don't have a site either.  SXD hosted my images for my last quiz.  For which I am grateful.  If Mr. MastodonFarm wants to go, I don't mind.  Rutgers solidarity, and all.  Someone offer to host his pics.  If not, I can go, but it'll take me a couple days.  I got pics, but no webspace at the moment.

Plus, my last quiz seemed to be too hard.  People were not pleased.  My new pics are easier (I think) but still eclectic.  No emo stuff...

3. This Los Angeles band features two former child actors of the "what ever happened?" variety. Their acting history includes shows on both early 90's Nickelodeon and ABC's TGIF. The band moved to Omaha to record their latest album, shown here.

4. This LA 5 piece(the usual instruments + keyboards/flute) had a reputation as a Weezer soundalike, an inaccurate label that was laid to rest with this 2003 release. This album has arguably a broader range of sound than Weezer's music ever did.

5. The band behind album #6 is this group's most obvious influence, though this newer band has a more accessible, catchier sound. Songs about soldiers, crooked French Canadians and your mother's secret life as a prostitute are all part of this 2002 release.

6. This band released only two albums, but this particular album has built them a loyal fanbase which has grown over the years, and helped land this on many lists about the best albums of the 90's... and it's my favorite. Organs, accordians, singing saws, trumpets and more obscure instruments like the zanzithophone set the tone for songs about childhood, childbirth, love, Jesus, Anne Frank and the Holocaust. The band, essentially the work of one man, has not recorded since. He might be living in Bulgaria now, recording folk music...

10. This here is this musician's second album, on which he'd switched from the electronic/industrial sound of his first album to a full orchestra. I believe he'd toured on Ozzfest several years back in promotion of his debut album, and received limited radio play in 2000 off this album's lead single. It's not necessarily one of my favorites, but I liked the art... this one may be too hard to guess.

11. This album was a compilation of older tracks and B-sides, released primarily to gain more exposure in America. It never really caught on overseas, and another album later this English band had broken up after releasing 5 albums in 5 years.

Actually I think it's Stormblåst, but Windows sucks at supporting all those characters, and I forget how to use Keyman.

Dimmu Borgir sucks.  I don't like all these commercial whitewashed "Black Metal" bands.  Not that I'm a big fan of Black Circle Black Metal, I just think it's naive to try to commercialise a genre so militantly based on authenticity.  The music ends up all overproduced and stripped of personality.  And the "evil" image just comes off as comical.

I agree Eggs but Dimmu's early albums (For All Tid and Stormblast) are their best ones because they were original back then....they had their own sound that wasn't commercial at all....but then they got signed to a major label and started producing generic metal....  :nono:
I can't stand their later stuff which is a shame cos they had so much potential I think....the songs on those 2 albums are so free-forming, they have virtually no verse/chorus structure they just flow and it's the greatest thing I've heard in a while, and I doubt that something like that will come along again any time soon....

Anyway seeing as how Evan had his turn, all my covers were guessed correctly except number 2 which was Stabbing Westward's self titled last album....  :cry:

Kobayashi are pretty cool, but it would be a real stretch to call them "the" Bremen hardcore band.  He's probably talking about Acme... or Systral, or possibly Carol, since Morser didn't release anything until after 1996.  Or maybe 2 Hours to Doom was 1996... A friend of mine has it on vinyl, but I downloaded it.  It ain't hard to find on Soulseek. 

You could try emailing or calling the label.  The US distributor is Very; I dunno about Germany.  Sometimes the labels still have out of print stuff or can source it, plus you might be able to convince them to reprint it, especially if you have some friends complain too.

Aight, here's some hints:

4) These infamous Norwegian Deathpunks had a rollercoaster career of substance abuse, insanity and being on the edge of making it big.  They broke up in 1998 during the tour of their most acclaimed album. They cleaned up and reformed in 2001 and toured with Queens of the Stone Age in 2003.  Sadly N. America wasn't ready for their gonzo brand of shock rock.  This is their second album.

5) During the late 70's and early 80's female fronted bands enjoyed a fair amount of play on mainstream radio.  Bands like Blondie and the Go-Go's derived their sound from punk and new wave.  This woman, however stuck to a hard rock approach.  Blessed with a killer voice and a good back up band this Heartbreaker enjoyed much success with her first three albums, this is her third.

6) Part of the new wave of British Heavy Metal in the 70's, these perennial Birmingham rockers turned out hit album after hit album.  Though never gaining the success of bands like Iron Maiden, they nevertheless staked their ground as a true force in metal.  Met with controversy about subliminal lyrics encouraging suicide, they perservered and are still seen on the main stage at festivals all over the world.  This is their 1981 release.     

9)Hailing from Washington DC these two DJ's mix up a variety of ethnic styles along with trip hop, jazz and plenty of stolen samples to form a unique and underrated electronic sound.  You may not be familar with theses sonic thieves, but you've most likely heard them.  Their work has been featured in movies, commercials and TV shows like The Sopranos and ER.  This is their latest mix.

Quicky Review:

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia

Their most accessible release to date, although some would argue Lightbulb Sun is.  More song oriented than previous efforts, the dreamy ambient element of earlier, trippier works remains in tact though.  Great songs from beginning to end.  Can't pick any faves, but "Trains", "The Sound of Muzak" "Blackest Eyes" and "Heartattack in a Lay by" are all standouts.

9/10 Solid.

Some of them are a real pain in the arse to get exactly what they are looking for.

I got to 35 without any help, then I started cheating by asking people and seaching the artists I knew to get titles. I'm on 52 now... the first cover on the third row is pissing me off though...

I'm going through that album quiz, but I hate it. It really pissed me off when it wasn't doing things right like they actually are. For example; "Beastie Boys - To The 5 Boroughs" it wouldn't accept. But that's the way it frickin' well is! But instead it made me put “5” as a word “five” instead of a number, even though on the real album it’s a god damn number though! So the quiz is wrong! Also, AC/DC, it just wouldn't accept it unless I took out the forward slash. That’s just plain stupid too. Those utter asshats who made that quiz should have tried looking at what it actually said on the albums they chose…

Actually, I know a few more Chinese punk bands.  There's SMZB, too, and Brain Failure, and Rococo.  In fact, I'm going to guess SMZB, because it's supposed to stand for "bread of life" and judging by my two years of college Japanese, that's what the lower left of the album cover says.  I have absolutely no idea what the album title is, though.

God, I've seen a bunch of these before, I just can't remember the names.

few hints:

#1 is an instrumental post-rock band formed in glasgow.  this is their 1997 debut album, i believe.

#2 is an Illinois-based band, formed around 1990 though not together anymore; this is their second album, produced by Keith Cleversley

#3 a 1988 partial album by a (popular) alternative New York band

#4 is a band led by the infamous Stephin Merritt; this album was released... 1992...ish.

#6 is a 2000 release, part of a three album set. It is by one band, but there are many guest artists and such. Their frontman also assists a certain Mike with another band...

#8 is a solo album by a rather talented canadian singer/songwriter, released in 2003 after his band had become defunct.

#10 is a Washington D.C. based alternative/semi-experimental band that played their last show in the summer of 2003...This is their 2001 release.

As an added hint that'll give them away most likely... all the bands in 1,4,6, and 8 share the same first letter.

You'll have to forgive me though, I was using MS Paint to cover up the band/album names...still, you should be able to tell what they are. Or at least I'll be able to.
