That early music video (for its time) had a chilling but true prediction; the ability to combine pictures and sound has probably made the music itself less important these days and now it's mostly about marketing and image. And 'pop music' is oxymoronic; many people hate it.
I see modern radio music as more of a showcase for top 40 music these days more than ever. I felt like chucking out the car radio when it came to that 3 supposedly distinct radio stations played the same Eminem hit song. I think there's hardly much variety in the radio these days, so for me it's usually downloading or CDs.
Do you think the radio's still worth listening to a lot (at least where you're from)?
-
I love my local radio station :D it rocks. Apart from the weekend, then i hate it :(
-
i don't listen to radio.
-
Not a big fan of the radio.
-
I listen to rock stations, my local one is very very good, and doesn't play crap music. I have very limited ways to hear rock music- only radio and Fuse, so mainstream is what I get, but nevertheless there is some really good mainstream. I know many people here aren't all that fond of mainstream rock, or mainstream at all, but some is actually worth listenign to, it's where I get a lot of my music, and regardless of what anyone says, I know what music I like and I'll listen to it if I like it. Also it plays indie rock so I can hear some little known bands too. :)
-
Most of the time that anyone lsitens to the radio, they're either driving in a car or working in a cubicle. Since I do neither of those things, I hardly lsiten to the radio.
When I do listen, it's usually to streamed internet radio, anyhow.
-
Good old Lyric FM, for classical music to soothe my inner savage beast, i.e. at 8 in the morning when it would freeze a brass monkey.
Other than that, Strawberry Alarm clock for funny morning antics would I listen to and the odd good recent song.
There's not a big selection of Irish radio stations anyway, we mostly have pop stations only, not many music specific stations. :(
-
I stopped listening to the radio the moment I could afford to buy my own music. I pick up new music from watching MTV2/Q/whatever, stuff my friends recommend, or just going to gigs that I think I'll like.
If there was radio with no announcer, no ads, and there was some magic way I could change the song if I didn't like it - then I'd listen to the radio more.
-

Why don you try changing the station????
-
I've vented my feelings about radio before, most of them over here suck....If you like Top 40, annoying ads every 5 minutes, stupid shameless self promotion then you'll be fine.... :hmpf:
There is one radio station here that has a metal show every Tuesday night though and also the music they play is quite varied through the day....
-
I don't listen to the radio at all, aside from maybe some college stations. All hard rock stations sound the same, all classic rock stations sound the same, all 80s stations sound the same, etc. And all the bands are starting to sound the same, too.
That's why I have K++.
-
College radio is good. There are some shows that play underground/indie rock or rap. Too bad it's not 24/7. The rotation is daily, and it comes only one day per week. And they used to showcase some cool DJs spinning club music without all the cheesy stuff. But one day, the station shut down. Godspeed, Energy 88.7 :(
-

Well that would require effort... plus what would I change it to - how many 'good' stations are there anyway? I am just too lazy to change it all the time even if I knew there was another good station. :)
My solution if I want a more random selection is (having my entire CD collection as MP3's) play winamp on shuffle.

Fair enough :p
-
Get an iPod with a car kit dude.
-
everything sucks.
radio
tv
other stuff
Yeah. I like music, but the mainstream radio blows and I'm not near any good college stations now. I listen to the news station a lot, because I'm like 80.
-
Radio is only good if you have the right station. I'm a geek rocker, and I don't have a station to listen to, which makes me sad.
-
I don't like music, so I voted that. But I would like to know what Victrola is...
-

I hate radio! They mostly all play the same 50 shity songs over and over and over again.
-
I never listen to the radio, except in the morning as I have my alarm set to the Oldies station.
As far as I can tell, modern commercial radio blows worse than it did in the 90's.
-
My favorite radio station, 106.7 FM, has this crazy gimmick where they play ten songs in a row as part of their "shut up and rock" campaign. I used to like the station because it played a lot of classic rock as well as rock from the 80s, but now they're including so much 90s and new crap that it's no longer "shut up and rock," it's more like "shut up and rock, rock, rock, suck, suck, rock, majorly suck, rock, rock, suck, and suck".
What I really hate about radio is the talk. I've come to the conclusion that all morning talk shows fall into one of two categories: 'two dumbasses and their dumbass entourage' or 'one dumbass and a big group of perky dumbasses'. I heard a promo for Bob and Tom (Group 1) stating that they were "...different from everyone else..." and that "...they have their own schtick..." Neither could be farther from the truth. They were making the same crude jokes, laughing the needle off the meter like an uncontrollable jackass' braying, and talking with their bimbo posse. As far as I can tell, every single morning radio duo does this. What sucks to the same extent but in a different way is the second group, and good god, they're everywhere. Maybe it's because I'm coming home from work at eight in the morning, or maybe it's because they genuinely suck ass, but I don't want to hear Captain Perky and the Perk Patrol playing idiotic games with each other and going on and on with pseudo-sexual banter. I also can't stand the frequent traffic reports (often from someone claiming to be in a helicopter). If someone is listening to the radio on their way to work, it's too fucking late to be telling them that they should attempt to avoid the traffic jam they're already mired in.
Of course, daytime radio also sucks. One of the so-called shows features a moron, his moron co-host, and his alter-ego. The guy, Tom Ryan, doesn't realize just how unfunny he is, nor does he just how obvious it is that 'Art' is just him talking through his nose.
I have been developing an increased interest in NPR (national Public Radio). Although it's pretty much all talk, they don't try to be funny (and fail) or interrupt my music listening with their jibba-jabba. I am particularly fond of "The Connection", "Talk of the Nation" and "Talk of the Nation: Science Friday", and "The Todd Munz Show".
-
I don't listen to commercial radio ever. I actually stopped going to my gym because I couldn't stand the radio they played in there. the talk kills me, and the ads are my least favourite thing in the universe. I listen to a public radio station in the evenings when I'm at my mother's house, and I listen to an internet radio station that is very specific, but otherwise, radio sucks, especially since deregulation here in the US. That killed it worse than video. Now every radio station is the same, because they're all run by Clearchannel. But nobody plays the stuff I listen to anyway, so I'd be stuck listening to my own pointlessly obscure collection even if radio ads didn't exist.
-
Stations around here all play the same, tired, shitty old cack on a loop. Which is Puddle of Mudd, POD, Nickleback, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a lot of Creed, OVER AND OVER AND OVER and nothing else. They throw me a bone with the occasional Alice in Chains song, but then they smear turds all over it by playing some disgusting punk-pop caca. If I listen to the radio, it's because there's a game on I want to hear, my bf is listening to sports radio for the talk shows and I'm in his car, or I find some politics station and listen to it for 3 minutes before geting angry because all politics radio around here is comprised of raging morons.
I'll stick to my CDs.
-
Internet radio used to be ok. Because it wasnt all commercial. But now the RIAA has killed off all the independant ones.
-
I Only listen to Talk Radio and Classical stations. When I want to hear Music I like I have CD's. Like right now I'm actualy listening to the Buggles tune refrenced in the topic from the Time Life 80's compalation. I could have turned on my 80's, 90's, and today FM station but all I would have heard is shit like Nervana and F-ing sugar ray. All that hideous nutrasweet rock shit from the 90's on.
(And if I offended anyone who likes that crap, Tuff. Not every body likes what you like)
-
I don't really watch music TV, or listen to the radio that much any more, but I am a fan of The Buggles - I urge everyone to go out and buy Age of Plastic :)
-
Radio is great, although I listen to BBC Radio Four (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio4.shtml?lw) which has little music on it.
-
i think i listen to radio five or six times a year
-
I listen to the radio in the car where I go places and as long as I'm listening to music and not some radio announcer smacking their gums I'm ok... I have to agree with the morning show take. The "Bob and Tom" are everywhere, every station locally for anyone has one, either that or they have the "Bob and Tom"... Anyways, I listen to it in the car and that's about it, tasty... fine...
-
The only time I've listened to the radio in the past 2 years was when my friend's band was on a local station. I'll stick to my CD's, thank you very much.
-
Depends on the station. When I'm driving I mostly listen to FBi and Triple J if I'm not listening to a CD.
I can't stand radio advertising.
-
Triple J is good at months at a time but alot of the time its crapmundo, But it still beats commercial radio, I listen to the cricket on ABC which is always good.
-
I don't listen to the radio much, but If you know what shows to tune in for it can be very good. I listen to John Peel's Radio 1 show (occasionaly), which is rather good as it's pretty much all stuff that I havent heard before. If I'm driving then I like to listen to Radio 2, usualy Steve Wright which has plenty of oldies mixed in with the best of the new stuff.
Oh, and if you include digital radio then 6 Music if a damn fine station. Now if I only had that DAB reciver...
-
Stuff like Muse, Travis, Coldplay and Radiohead struggle to survive in the pop shite radio world today. I demand we burn and elminate the genre of pop with cappilist hip hop for good!
-
I don't listen to the radio much, but I enjoy the talking between the songs when I do. I prefer cd's.

I like all those bands, and I agree with you, except for Coldplay. They seem to get a lot of air play here. Whereas Travis don't get any, and there new album entered at number 40 in the charts, where there last one was in the top ten. There new single has been ignored by radio completely.
-
Travis are rotated quiet well on Triple J, There new single is good...
-
But nobody listens to 'The J' except freaks like you and me. Wait until there 4th single for this album, 'Peace The Fuck Out', is released. Truly a great song.
-
Actual youth aren't supposed to listen to the J's. Only people in their 20's who remember when it was good.

Or people who were brought up listening to it when it was good, Listening to their sister's radio and hottest 100 CDs, and seriousley, how piss poor have the last 2 hottest 100's been..
-
what do i vote for if both radio and tv suck?
the invention of college radio doesn't exist in germany, we only have mainstream radio stations. therefore, listening to radio means listening to a mixture of britney and other assorted pop shit of these days combined with the most horrible songs from the 80s.
not that mtv or viva is any better (apart from one single show on viva, which focuses only on alternative music).
-
Everything sucks, except for the stuff I buy.
-
In my first year of university, I was called and asked to partcipate in a survey to see what radio I listend to. One week later, I sent them back thaeir survey booklet completly blank. A bunch of my friends sat around one night thinking up bands that would never get played on the radio to list in the "suggestions" page. And they gave me two bucks for the whole thing! :D
-
I'm mired in the music of the 70s and early 80s so the local classic rock station isn't that bad for my personal tastes. If it came down to just about anything else, I'd say that there isn't much to listen to on radio any more.
-
I don't listen to FM radio on my own. The only time I hear it is at the gym where the newest crapcore farts out of the speakers and assaults my ears. In my car I listen to AM as there are a couple of good sports talk stations in the area.
-

You mean the stuff I buy.
-
The only thing worth listening to is Chris Moyles. :D
The nearest we get to an alternative station is Virgin which plays sort of 80's and 90's mainstream rock, but it beats anything else by a mile. I just wish all the middle of the road stations would stop pretending to offer all great variety and own up to what they really are, mainstream conservative pap.
-
Did I mention I like electric 6, The Darkness and Tenacious D?
-

excuse me, but: the darkness? aaargh!
also, i wanted to vote for "no, it's all crap these days", but i somehow ended up voting for pat buchanan. i have no idea what the fuck happened.
-
The good radio stations around are:
WLNK 107.9 The Link (Charlotte, NC)
BBC1, BBC6Music (London, UK)
Virgin Radio (London, UK)
Red Dragon FM (Cardiff, Wales, UK)
Virgin gets really repititious, though. And The Link is going a little bit more pop-stream than they used to be. The Link would usually be playing now the songs that are going to be super-major-hits in a month or so, i.e. Matchbox Twenty's "Unwell," Jason Mraz's "The Remedy," Dana Glover's "Thinking Over," etc. They also have the best radio talk show that I've ever heard The Matt and Ramona Show. When I was in England, I didn't miss much from the States, but I missed my friends and I missed The Matt and Ramona Show.
BBC1 plays stuff that isn't mainstream in the US quite a bit (i.e. the awesome Welsh band Feeder, and the even better Scottish band Travis), and BBC6 plays some random stuff.
Red Dragon FM has a spectacular mix, in my opinion, the little I listened to it for the two days I was in the Cardiff (Caerdydd) area.
EDIT: The Darkness rocks! They just released Permission to Land in the US - now I don't have to order it!
-

I've heard both of those bands (both who are excellent bands) on the mainstream rock radio here (which I'd proabably say is K-Rock- a station which isn't too bad.)
-
I've never heard either on WOZN, WLNK, WEND, or WKZL.
WEND is the least mainstream of them all, but it's also the only one run by Clear Channel. (Clear Channel is icky.)
I have to somehow find a copy of Echo Park by Feeder.
-
If you're tired of the mainstream, there's gotta be more stuff behind it. These days, the spoon-fed stuff isn't gonna cut it. Like many suggest, go download.
And doesn't the UK and central Europe have the best techno music scene? The US hasn't seen stable success in that kind of music, but most of the world has. Take advantage of that. Techno is REALLY popular in Europe, tons more than pop. But I dunno why many of the Euro-Peelers don't seem to reflect that :hmpf:
-
I like techno. If I'm allowed to include Internet-only radio stations, I'll include Digitally Imported (http://www.di.fm).
-
Internet Radio is sometimes cool. I sometimes use Lauch when I'm at work. BBC Six-Music is good (no playlist, a policy I wish Radio One would employ).
Local Radio pales into comparison with national radio. They should never try to compete. They were better when they never bothered, but better shows.
-
I live in a hole where schedualing includes the four sides, nashville country music, popular oldies, butt-rock, and even worse country music.
There is a college station that sometimes gives good reception here. Last years it was all electronica, good electronica, and showcasing local talent of any variety. Now its a total request, so I don't listen to it much anymore.
Since most here have commented on the blandness of most radio, I won't.
Except that it's B L A N D
-

Hey! I love techno, listen to it loads.
German and Dutch radio is best for live and recorded mixes though.
Also there is probably a hundred and one internet radio stations for the genre too.
And any other for that fact! So I rarely listen to the radio, what with most jocks being a bunch of muppets and every other radio one DJ who all have an uncanny ability to bore me half to death (especially Jo Whiley).
-
Used to listen to triple J, but now, only classic FM for me. When this music great, it's great, when it isn't, it's easy to tune it out. I've become incredibly out of touch with modern music. I know that there is some good stuff, but frankly, I got all I need riiiiiight here.
-
Jo Whiley doesn't incite the desire to grab a 2 by 4 and beat certain people haklf to death anywhere near as much as Sara Cox does/did. When it's 7am and I'm trying to enjoy a wakening shower I don't want some northern bint screaming in my ear and laughing at random moments.
I gues this fits here too, I was covering a store in Slough for a whole week a couple of months back and their local station is Star 106.6 FM, which is truly terrible. It's the sort of station your Dad would play in the car. Anyway in their morning show they played a clip I recognised... the two Benders from Farnsworth Parabox saying "Our universe is doomed... DDOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMEEEDDD". Always brightened up my morning.
-
I know. Triple J does seem to be succumbing to commerciality. They seem to have a very loose definition of "Alternative" But lets see you retain your principles when your government funding dries up.
Seeing a Music clip along with the song does alter my perception of it.
And not in a positive way. It seems empty. Just listening to the song is much better. A lot of film clips are good but you assume they they are intrinsicly linked with the meaning of the song. When in reality they have just been whipped up by some director who didnt play the song and the artist/s just had some "Creative input"
The Idea behind Music clips and MTV who came up with the idea was to make the promtional clips that record companies made to sell thier songs into entertainment in its own right.
Thats all Music clips are. Ads.

Northern bint!! :laff: cloth eared too.
On Kiss100 on BamBam's breakfast show they had sampled Amy saying "spl'uh" or something along those lines at the end of a jingle they used between tracks.
-
The only kind of music on the radio I like is classic rock, stuff from the 70s and 80s (and some 90s). I love how my hometown gets American and Canadian stations so I get like 4 classic rock stations to listen to.
-
I never posted here before, but I went with the "There's very little that's good" option...
-
I usually only listen to the radio if I'm in the car or say now, if I haven't got anything I particually want to listen to. I usually listen to Virgin 1215AM, as they play good music. My local radio station plays the same pop crap over and over.
-
There's no good radio stations here. Even the dipshits at college radio play the same garbage every other radio station's playing. I hate top 40. I hate mainstream rap(though I do respect the underground). I hate alternative rock. Can't say enough bad about the radio.
-
Studio Brussels, that is if I can be bothered to turn on the radio. They try play alternative and rock. In the evenings they play more specific genres. Fridays and Saturdays it's usually techno followed by drum 'n bass.
-
I can't pick it up from here, but XFm is supposed to be quite good. I only heard it late on a Friday night once when it was Drum n Bass followed by the Metal show, and by metal I mean proper music of the apocolypse. During the day I think it's more mainstream though.
Radio 1 does have the Rock Show too don't forget.
So nerdlingus you live in London then?

I listen ro radio all day at work, I would've torn all my hair out by now if it wasn't for BBC Radio 2 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2)
Weekends I do listen, especially on a Sunday when Parkinson plays some nice Jazz + Big Band.
So Radio Rules!!
-
Triple J has upped its game with today today in the afternoon with the chaser crew. Those guys are great.
-
Chaser has a show in Triple J now?
Frankly Its not as if they are "Execptionally" funny
-
They are not the merrick and rosso that filled that spot so perfectly but they are a welcome change.
-
NPR is amazing, the National Public Radio in the US is commercial free (its supported by donations and public funding) Though most NPR stations are Jazz or classical, the one by me, WBGO, (www.wbgo.org) Django Reinhardt . James Moody, all the great Jazz musicians.
-
I'm with coilette on this one though, Radio 2 is pretty much the only station I listen to especially Steve Wright's Golden Oldies!
I ain't sad for that, am I?

I like the Golden Oldies, but I don't like Steve Wright, he's a bit egotistical.
-
I would listen to radio two but I cant get it to work. The Box opens but then I cant hear anything.
-
Do any of you know any good interweb radio stations? And I mean really good (or weird) ones. I'm currently listening to Goatslayer (http://www.goatslayer.com). Which is really odd (but good for background noises.
Any recommendations?
-
i chose there is very little that is good. If i were to tune into the radio it would be to a classical station. The Chicago radio stations all suck, if it's a rock station it's all just we get paid to play this songs. if it's hip hop, then it's alljust we get paid to play this songs. over and over and over for all of them.
i completely agree with Just Chris when he says it's more visual marketing now than music. look at eminem, kylie, evanscene - they can delude themselves into thinking that they are musicians but really they are just marketing tools.
-
Don't you get any Blues stations in chicago?
I would've thought there'd be quite a few but then I've never been there or to america either...
One day though.
As for the visual marketing, I agree, music (for me anyhow) is intended for the ears, a video provides a distraction to the quality of the tune.
Also, instrumentals are better....(http://www.backtotheoldskool.co.uk/phpBB2/images/smiles/eusa_whistle.gif)
-
In Holland we have the Arrow Classic Rock station, that's pretty cool. But it's not on the ether or whatever that is called, only cable so I can't listen to it at work.
Most of the other channels suck
-
chicago isnt about real blues like Leadbelly for example, but hokey ass yuppie hard rock / blues.
-
You mean Teen Angst?
-
yeah sort of. The Smashing Pumpkins are from here right ;)
-

Finally someone agrees with me about Chicago blues. Not that the Blues Brothers didn't rock.
-
I listen to the J's as well, but not very often. Only in the morning, for Adam and Wil, who are actually funny most of the time. And I have a crush on Wil. The music they play has gone down big time. Otherwise it's CD's, and if we're driving home early in the morning 94.5 that plays old time sing along 80's pop.
