I don't know if this has been done before, but what do you think is the best song ever?
Led Zepplin-Stairway to Heaven
-
"I want to conquer the world" by Bad Religion has got to be my number one favorite song of all times. :)
-
'Break & Enter' by Prodigy is my fave song ever. And also 'Hella Good' by No Doubt, not only because it's a great song, but it has sentimental meaning to me as well :)
-
Joe Budden - Pump it up is a pretty dam good song just thought i might tell you :D
-
The lovely Ms. Fog sent me this. I think it could be the best love song of all time.
Not for small children, pets, or the easily offended

VelourFog: it's silence of the lambs
VelourFog: the musical
krakilin9: oh
krakilin9: ::interested::
VelourFog: that song is called "if i could smell her cunt"
VelourFog: as sung by dr lector

Pharcyde - Passing Me By
FACT!
-
i can't really decide. plus it changes anyway.
actually, since the whole album is just telling one story and all songs blend into the next song anyway, i'ld say:
the mars volta - de-loused in the comatorium
-
I tried to find the best song ever, when I had to decide which song I wanted to have played at my last school day, when I got my A-levels handed over. I finally chose 'the George Baker Selection - Little Green Bag', it's the title song from the film 'Reservoir Dogs'. This song has a lot of style and made me look cool (I guess mosst of my former schoolmates didn't like it too much because it's not a song, you can jump around and clap your hands to, but who cares).
Other songs I had in mind for that occasion where
'James Brown - It's A Man's World', 'Kool and the Gand - Jungle Boogie' and about fifty others. I can't tie myself down on one song.

its damn impossible for me to choose a song thats 'the best ever' but one song that'll always be a classic to me is "T.R.O.Y" by pete rock and C.L smooth.
-
My favourite song of all time would have to be:
U2 - Where The Streets Have No Name
The studio version (the one on The Joshua Tree) is nothing special but any live version is absolutly amazing.
Others which deserve and honourable mention would be:
U2 - All I Want Is You
Bon Dylan - Hurricane
-

Yes, the album Desire...
I bought it a few weeks ago, good stuff it is.

And as for Bob Dylan, I still haven't forgiven him for going electric.
Do I have to give an opinion now? I vote for Eye Level by the Simon Park Orchestra.
EDIT: Bob Dylan rant.
-
I'll vote for:
Beyond This Life- Dream Theater.

That's a pretty good song, but right now Delirium - Silence is my favorite.

Evanescence. i don't know which i think is the best, it changes every few days.
-
Eddie Money's 'Take Me Home Tonight' was always a good song when coming home during a sun set or at night with a passenger.

But answer this - how can you wake someone up inside? Do you cram an alarm clock in your body and let it ring? Or is it something really damn crazy to do? (Or is it a metaphor?)

I hate all songs, only orchestrated music is good. Especially movie soundtracks.

Hooary! I really like 'Bring Me To Life", and "Taking Over Me" the most of theirs, I think. "Fallen" is their debut, right? So it's hard to say they have the best song ever.

Actually listen to the song and maybe you'l figure out. All of Evanescence's songs have great meaningful lyrics, pay attention to 'm.
Ok, now that I'm done replying to quotes, I have to say I don't think there is such thing as 'the best song ever'. Too many good ones and people have too many opinions. If I had to pick my personal 'best song ever' I'd have a tough time cause I don't know much about music anywhere past 1994.
-
I listen to the song carefully. I even play it backwards for subliminal messages.
-
Eh, well, it makes sense anyways. You're frozen (not cold frozen) and he has to wake up her mind is what I've figured out.
-
Theres many a song I find as candidates for the best ever. Heres a few-
Gorillaz - 19/2000
Electric Six - High Voltage
Blur - Song 2
Theres more, but I'm lazy.

Excerpt from Aisle 10:
I seen you at my job
you're carrying yourself so well
I made myself a promise
not to get emotional
as I remain stable(stable)
I take another glance at you
if we were at the disco (whoa whoa)
then I would have to dance with you
this isn't cool....
and in my lonely eyes
I see my self in eloquent strides
in a sharp tuxedo
here goes nothing to her.....
Hello Allison
I want to hold your hand,
I haven't been,
the same man since I saw you comin' in,
let's have a toast to the girl in aisle 10
-
Oh, I remember those Gorillaz guys- they did like one song I cared about, that "I've got sunshine in a bag" one- the only line I remember- my friends and I say it from time to time when we're in that situation. You're right, there are too many to chose from.
P.S. I'm listening to "Fallen" at this very moment- very second I'm listening to 'Tourniquet" :)
-
hmm best ever thats a tuff call. Id say Blue Oyster Cult "Dont Fear the Reaper" was the best ever; close 2nd would be Tom Petty "Free Falling".
-
Shake Some Action.

It is a bit cliche, but it is still a great song.
My vote is for "American Pie" by Don McClean. Now that was his best song ("Vincent"? What the hell is that?).
-

Thanks for reminding me. Their song Clint Eastwood is just awesome, together with the video. That's the song you were talking about. I also like Dracula. I don't know what it is about that song, but it just puts me in the zone.
-
wish you were here - Led Zeppelin
-
Do you mean Pink Floyd?
-
There are many songs I like:
Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - The Smiths - I like the lyrics to this one, and just... the way it's sung.
Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits - Oh, a nice song to do air guitar to :)
-
Billie Jean, or Beat It by Michael Jackson.
Song 2 by Blur and Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana are right up there too.
-
'The Hideaway' by the Young Generation - "I woke up this morning and thought of you / It only brought tears to my eyes"
Ha ha! I am the master of obscurity.
-
I dunno I like London Calling by the Clash and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen that rocks too, plus Sex pistols and Evanescance. there are loads of tunes I like.
-
I have no idea...
a) what half these songs mentioned are :hmpf:
b) and that trivial matter of what I think is the best song ever...
I have an idea, that probably it's by Queen.
But to coincide with the "...Who???" theme (if you have the same knowledge - or lack of - of mainstream music as me) then I would say one of the best songs I've heard is Passion by 1 Gaint Leap - a fast rushing song full of African singing and the end is great how adults singing in a choir slowly fades into children singing in a playground.
Most of the 1 Giant Leap album is fantastic music. :)
Apart from that, most of the songs I hold very dear are mostly classical or soundtrack.
-
Best song ever?
Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd.
-
I love a lot of songs and it is unfair to choose one as the best of all time. So here I go...
It's one that nobody will have heard of: Lene Marlin, Unforgivable Sinner. I can never get tired of a song like that. :)
I wish that I had lots and lots of votes then I could also put in Queen and Evanescance and stuff. :(
-

I don't remember this thread being about what other people think of your song choice. :nono:
-
Maybe not, but it'd be pretty boring if it wasn't.
-
No fair! I never heard of most of these. Some of an old fart's favorites:
"One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer," John Lee Hooker's cover
"Bold Marauder," John Kay's (of Steppenwolf) cover - Cool, cool, lyrics...
"Three Women Blues," Memphis Slim - My life story in song...
"It's my own Fault," Johnny Winter - Also could be about me, and Winter is the best blues guitarist, period...
"They're Coming to Take Me Away, HAA HAA," Napoleon XVI - Will be my life story...
-
I just remembered. Wasn't this already done on Channel 4. I think Bohemian Rhapsody won, then again I could be wrong.
-
On Channel 4 I think they did the greatest #1s of all time. I think 'Imagine' by John Lennon came first, and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen was second. There's probably a list on their website.
-
Too many to have a best song, but here's somee of my bestest songs:
U2 - Bad
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight
Guns N' Roses - November Rain
Led Zeppelin - Stairway or Rock And Roll
Dire Straits - Brother In Arms, live from some place I forget.
Dire Straits - On Every Street, live from some place I forget.
Aerosmith - Love In an Elevator (live and studio versions are both good)
John Williams - Victory Celebration from ROTJ.
David Arnold - Stargate SG-1 end credits theme.
Don Davis - Anything is Possible, The Matrix soundtrack.
Frank Sinatra - Let's Face The Music and Dance.
Samuel Barber - Adagio for Stings.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird.
-
Nuetral Milk Hotel - King of Carrot Flowers pt 1&2
The Shins - New Slang
Social Distortion - I was wrong
Less Than Jake - Rock and Roll Pizzaria
The Alkaline Trio - Conclusions
I cant think of one clear cut best song, so I had to list.
-
According to VH1, it's Bille Jean by Michael Jackson.

Ugh. I mean, most of these are really good songs, but is this really an all-time best list? It sounds like a collection you'd buy off TV in the middle of the night. A lot of these are big hit songs from bands who've done much better material that never got released on singles, you know? Like U2, Led Zeppelin, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc.
-
Ok;
Led Zeppelin: Going to California (live)
Led Zeppelin: Bron-Y-Aur
(I like all Led Zep, but I prefer the acoustic sets)
Electric Six: Dance Commander!
The Darkness: Growing On Me
Metallica: One
Everclear: Local God
Errortype Eleven: Better Than The Superbowl
Jimmy Eat World: Bleed American
Span: Found
Nirvana: Rape Me
Weezer: Crab
Muse: Citizen Erased
Nina Simone: Feeling Good
Katrina and the Waves: Walking on Sunshine
(http://www.peelified.com/ubb/avatars/RoboPuppyJBark_Paul.gif)
Erm, There are many more.
Get these songs. They are cool.
-
Your list smells of Polygrip and cat pee. You need more Pumpkins, Zwan, Perfect Circle, Polyphonic Spree, Flaming Lips and Cooper Temple Clause. Shape up, boy!

Have you heard every song that was ever made??
No, me neither.
These are the best I got in my miniscule ~1000 winamp list and I do accept the fact there could be better tunes.
But I haven't heard them yet.
I hope I'll be collecting music all my life, so ask me again on my death bed. :p
Edit: Also, U2's got better than Bad?

Ah, you did say Bad, didn't you. The exception that proves the rule. It was never a single and it's not the band's biggest hit, unlike Freebird or Stairway to Heaven, or November Rain. Good work on that one.

Since I don't know very much about music before 1996, here are a few artists (mostly recent) that I would pick the best song from:
Tool
The Clash
The Ramones
A Perfect Circle
Rancid
Nofx
Flogging Molly
Dead Kennedys
Misfits
RHCP
Smashing Pumpkins
Foo Fighters
Dropkick Murphys
Me First And The Gimme Gimmes
ATDI
H20
Casualties
NIN
Descendents
The Vandals
The Unseen
Less Than Jake
Anti Flag
Anthrax
Bad Religion
Evanescence
Green Day
Nirvana
Nelly (holy hell, I just found out there's a rapper Nelly, :( )
I know these are the ARTISTS and not the SONGS but these are just a few of the artists I'd probably pick from.
p.s. faze: i was being sarcastic if you didn't see my post in the test thread :p
-
Futurama_Hil, may I suggest starting downloading (or buying) music from, oh say, the classic or baroque periods and work your way through the last few centuries of music (yes, even the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's).
You'll be surprised at how much better stuff there is.

I don't want to start a argument, but GOD! I COULDN'T BE MORE AGAINST THAT POST! Fortunatly most people have a good taste in music, that's why Billie Jean won in the first place! How can you not like that song?! Michael Jackson is a musical genius!

ATD-I: Fab
Mars Volta: V. Fab
Sparta: Less than Fab :p
Mars Volta got the good side of ATD-I in Sammy's opinion :)
-
You know what spiff, you're right, apart from the Foo Fighters, The Beatles, and Weezer, I haven't heard of any of those bands! I'm sure they're good though, and if not, as long as you like them that's OK.

sparta are fab. having seen them live, i must say that they're awesome musicians. and they play very good rock. as i mentioned before, it's conventional rock. they won't create a new genre with what they're playing, but they sure are one of the most interesting "conventional" rock bands.
also, just a guess, the next sparta album will be more experimental and will feature more electronic elements.
-
I'll bear that in mind, i've heard little of Sparta's stuff and it wasn't encourging. But if you think it's worth it Spiff, i'll give them a try.

That list looks mostly like a collection of number 1 hits. Still, I have 62 of those songs in my playlist. Scary.
What bothers me most about that list is the fact the "Space Oddity" has somehow been chosen for the best David Bowie song. I know it the obvious choice, but he's made so many songs that are better. The same goes for Beatles, ABBA, Beach Boys, The Kinks and Stevie Wonder, to name a few. In my opinion, off course ;)
Anyway, here's a few of my favourites:
- "Word on a Wing", David Bowie
- "Waterloo Sunset", The Kinks
- "Cavatina", The Shadows (instrumental, but so beautiful I had to list it)
- "Tiny Dancer", Elton John
- "Lampshade", Kashmir
- "Alt hvad hun ville var at danse", TV-2 (I expect roughly one person on this board to recognise that one :))

Season of the Witch- By Steven Stills, Al Cooper, and Mike Bloomfield is excellent.
-
This is more fancy than anything. it wuld have been better to ask, something imporntatn like, what song would you listen to with headphones? or what song keeps you coming back for more, no matter how many times you listen to it? What's the song you'd want others to listen to?
-
I can listen to a lot of stuff withut ever getting tired of them. just a few of those are Tool (maybe cause their songs can be 20 minutes long...), Rancid, Nofx, The Clash, Me First And The Gimme Gimmes, etc...
-
Personally, I could listen to Fugazi's The Arguemnt, The Mars Volta's De-loused in the Comatorium and The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and always hear something new.
-
The mars volta's deloused in the comatorium is new, I must buy it.

btw, venus, dunno if u take this as a ,compliment or not, but kinda remind me of amy (lee, not wong)
-

I like the actual version better than the crappy William Orbit mix, but their last album (All That You Can't Leave Behind) was just too close to pop-rock for my liking. Not saying it didn't have good songs though.
-
Hil, i like evanescence a lot too!
-
do u have any info on them, hil?
-
Yes, i do. got o their main site or here is a bio. If you want to know more, and also to answer fry2006's question (in the seventh paragraph):

death cab for a cutie - for what reason
-
oh, i like these songs a lot! lol!
-
another candidate: Time Of Your Life- Green Day
it's different than all their other songs and so sad and just so good!
-
Gollum's song on the two towers CD the only song i can stand to listen too.
-
Time of your life- I kept wondering why we didn't sing it at the closing campfire all 4 weeks I was at camp....but I choose one we did: "500 Miles (Away From Home)," by Peter Paul, and Mary....but I prefer the kingston trio's cover of it better...
-
i'm amazed nobody has said it yet: of coure the best song ever is the song mentioned in tribute by tenacious d.
as tribute is also the only song to mention it, i guess this alone makes it a great song too.
problem solved, this thread can be closed. ;)
-
Funny, because in one of the versions of Tribute I've got is that they segue into "Stairway To Heaven", hinting that that maybe the Greatest Song In the World, maybe?
-
Yeah, the original title for Tribute was The Greatest Song in the World and the entire thing was heavily based upon Stairway. When it was cleaned-up and commercialised for the album, they re-did a hell of a lot of it so as to leave the identity of "the song" a mystery.
My humble opinion: Stairway to Heaven is ever so slightly overrated :p

ok if anybody else has heard of the band Dimmu Borgir please let me know cos I'd be interested....They are a Norwiegan black metal group who in there early days used 2 write some of the most symphonic metal u've ever heard....Nowdays they are basic death metal, gone the way of most bands which is sad....
I literally drooled when I first heard them....anyway one of their songs off the STORMBLAST album, called ANTIKRIST I think is one of the greatest songs ever written, the ending is just well I don't have the words for it, it sends chills up my spine ....for me anyway obviously everyone has their own opinion on the best song ever....but if u like metal download this song, (or order the cd :D ) and tell me I'm wrong....

Best Songs? Favourite Songs?
3 of my all time favourite songs:

Herman's Hermits - There's a kind of Hush (all over the World)
3 songs, I think which may be some of the best songs ever:
Cat Stevens - Morning has broken http://www.allspirit.co.uk/morning.html (http://www.allspirit.co.uk/morning.html)
Rod Stewart - Sailing http://www.lyricsdepot.com/rod-stewart/sailing.html (http://www.lyricsdepot.com/rod-stewart/sailing.html)

The Official Best Selling Single in the UK is Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" followed very closely by Bohemian Rhapsody and Boney M's "Mary's Boy Child".
And I'm disgusted by the fact that there is no mention of The Tremeloes or Pickettywitch.
For shame.
-
The theme from Tron.
-
I just realised that all the music I like is not from America!!!
I think I just can't stand their accents when they sing or something, make the song too pop like or something.
I like U2 (Irish), Coldplay (UK), Travis (UK), Radiohead (UK), Oblivia (Australia)...
-
^ I just realised the only American music groups I really like are those that don't actually have a vocalist :)
...and Pink Floyd rock :)
-
I like Simple Minds "Don't You Forget About Me"
-
Tori Amos - Icicle
Sage Francis - Crack Pipes
Aesop Rock - Daylight
Limp Bizkit - Every song ever made. Ever.

Well, had I realised I'd not already posted in this thread I'd have said Pink Floyd's "Us and Them", but it looks like I already have. I do have a thing for U2, but I'm not sure about Electrical Storm. Nice song to chill out to though.
-
I dunno, but I really like the Beatles' songs "A day in the life" and "she's leaving home".
And REM's "losing my religion" and "at my most beautiful", and right now my favourite song is Phoenix with "everything is everything", but my favourite songs change very often...
-
er... songs I like...
Can I list orchestral pieces too? 'course I can.
Holtz- Mars: Bringer of War
Dire Straits- Brothers in Arms
Dire Straits- On Every Street
Dire Straits- Sultans Of Swing
(I don't know, orchestral)- Death
Pink Floyd- Wish you were here
The Doors- This is the End
The Doors- Riders on the Storm
Black Sabbath- Paranoid
Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watch Tower (only good cover in existence, imho)
Led Zeppelin- Stairway to Heaven
Dave Brubeck- Take 5
Miles Davies- So What
Betohvan- Moonlight Sonanta
Songs I like when I'm drunk:
Khe Sahn
Africa
Sunglasses at Night
I Ran (So Far Away)
Killing in the Name Of (take THAT, throat)
Love my Way
Hey Jude
c'mon... I can't be the only person who's musical taste differ vastly when drunk?

Whenever I tech a music event, party, or disco I can't drink because it'll void my insurance (and I often have to collapse the entire sound and light rig after the party, which is hard enough without having impaired hand/eye co-ordination) - and I've also noticed that when drunk people suddenly seem to like any kind of Hiphop/R&B when drunk - even people who detest it normally.
-
My favourite song is 'Where the Streets have no Name' by U2. It is just so fantastic in every single way.
-
Best song ever:
Electric Light Orchestra-Mr Blue Sky
-
Q magazine recently voted the best song ever as being "One" by U2. I like that song :)
-
I have quite a bundle of these, but right now I listen a lot to Jeff Buckley's version of the Leonard Cohen song "Hallelujah". I think JB's version has ruined it for anyone else who wants to cover that song. Compared to his, all others will look puny and unacceptable.
-
I really like Lola by the Kinks.
And the song I think is the BEST SONG EVER this week is Midnight Boy's Charge Group by Stance Punks.
You should also get Crablouse by Lords of Acid. I won't make any claims about it being the best song ever, but it's certainly fun to sing along with.
-
Dr. Demento - Star Trekkin'.

"Hallelujah" is a beautiful song, indeed. I rather fond of Rufus Wainwright's version myself, but Jeff Buckley's rendition great as well.
-
the doors - the end
metallica - creeping death
metallica - one
nin - hurt
nin - eraser
nick cave & the bad seeds - red right hand

.
william shatner - lucy in the sky with diamonds :evillaugh:
-
...and that's a ticket to hell for Gocad.

@Merky: Rufus does a good job, but after hearing Buckley, NONE of the other versions will ever quite cut it with me.
-
It is a good song. He sings with Feeling
You can really feel it....

There are many I like:
Deep Purple - Child in time
Procol Harum - A whiter shade of pale
The Animals - House of the rising sun
Them - It's all over now baby blue
Queen - Bohemian Rapsody
AC/DC - TNT
Beatles / Joe Cocker - With a little help (Both versions are great)
the rolling stones - Start me up (And many more of the stones)
Many more Songs of U2 (especially the old ones), Nirvana
-
I already posted here but another one of my all time favourite songs is "Theme For The Innocence" by White Skull....beautiful, sad instrumental played with 2 mandolins....
-
There are so many, but I really love Pizzicato Five's Baby Love Child. It made me cry when I first heard it in Leela's Homeworld, and I still love it now. It's just such a beautiful, sweet song with a melody that just rolls so perfectly. I love the way it's upbeat while keeping its soft, flowing rhythm. A lot of the time I find that slow songs bore me, but this one makes me feel warm inside. A beautiful song. It's a shame that the techno-ish "attention, adults" bits are spliced in there, because they seem to have nothing to do with the rest of the song, but overall, Pizzicato Five have done exceptionally well on this one. Beautiful. :)
-
My best songs ever that I like at the moment are:
Eamon – F**k it I don’t want you back
Frankee – F**k you right back.

Best songs ever... It's hard, I guess. There are a few I would nominate...
M. Jackson - Smooth Criminal
B. Boucher - A Walk Outside
L. Marlin - Unforgivable Sinner
L. Marlin - You Weren't There
N. Imbruglia - Torn
Tricky - Black Steel
No Doubt - Running
I think it would have to be Running. I Just love that song. Brings a tear to this old (?) curmudgeon's eye...
-
I've already done this thread but it has to be um... Sean paul - get busy and
Black Eyed Peas - Shut up
-
I'm gonna go with Tom Waits' "Everything You Can Think". Anyone who hasn't heard it is a wet ponce.
Also, I must mention The Bug "Fuck Y-Self", which is a really angry, funny and gritty dancehall track. Turn it up. :)
-
*drips uncontrollably*
I'd also like to add the following to my list:
Lisa Loeb - Stay
Nelly Furtado - Explode
-
Current favourites:
Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill
Peter Gabriel - Here Comes The Flood
Franz Ferdinand - The Dark Of The Matinee
U2 - Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
U2 - The Fly

No way. Britney Spears' new one wipes the floor with those two in terms of shit-per-second (or sps if you will).
-
What about Busted's new one?

:hmpf:

-
Can't pick just one:
Capitalist Casualties - On The Take
Dead Milkmen - Leggo My Ego
Supersuckers - Coattail Rider
Primus - Frizzle Fry
Anal Cunt - I Made Your Kid Get AIDS So You Could Watch It Die
Dillinger Escape Plan - 43% Burnt

Well, the best three songs I've ever heard are definately Queen songs; one written by guitarist Brian may and the other two by their late, great frontman.
In my opinion, the best song that could ever be written must be Freddie Mercury's "Bohemian Rhapsody." The song is simply unlike anything anyone had ever done before or since (In my scope of awareness anyway). Combining rock, opera and a melodic, almost mystical opening ballad, the song grabs your attention and for nearly six minutes refuses to let go. How many people have consitently named this ong as the greatest of all time? Just goes to show what a visionary freddie was and how far his talent stretched. Even the title was well thought out - any other name wouldn't have fit the grandeur of the song.
The nex song would have to be fan-favorite "We Will Rock You." This song is simple, direct, short and everlasting. It's one of the songs that few people realise was ever written - like "Happy Birthday" - and the masses assume it just came into existence. It can be sung anywhere and most everyone knows the chorus if not the lyrics. And don't get me started on Queen's"Fast Version" of the song...
The third best song of all time is from Queen's second - and best - album creatively titled Queen II. "March of The black Queen" is a precursor to "Bohemian Rhapsody" and is, in many ways, a better song though not as accessible.
And there you have it.
-
Paradise City by Guns 'n' Roses
Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin (I don't care if its a cliche)
Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden
and of course, the best song ever written about a bum
Mr Wendal by Arrested Development
-
"Mr Wendel" by arrested development. anyone that doesnt agree is wrong. Whats all this arrested development sitcom crap on Fox? protest i scream PRO-TEST!

I'm going to recycle my answer from years ago, when this question was last asked. It's still my favourite.
Fresh Prince & Jazzy Jeff: Boom, Shake the Room
You know, I requested it just last Friday night out at the club. They played it. I had quite a good feeling of satification watching those other poor drunks on the dancefloor, unable to keep up with the lyrics, stumbling over the words, forgetting the lines to the song - while there i was: cool and collected. Rolling away those old faithful lyrics like it was no effort at all, which it wasn't. My best friend joined in with some hand movements and we stole the floor. It was a good night.
-
I say Will Smith should have let Jeff Townes lay his hands on some of his songs. They were great together. Two grammies- can't really argue with that... (almost)
-
Now I can not remeber if i posted here before but as musical tastes can change over time, a new list seems justifiable.
NIN- Hurt (Although in truth I really like Johhny Cash's version
Metallica-one
AFI-God called in sick today
Mizguchi Hajime- Grace:Jin roh main theme omega
Nobuo Uematsu- One winged Angel
Danzig- How the Gods kill
Foo Fighters- Everlong
Kamelot-Don't you cry
Opeth-Patterns in the ivy
Sprung monkey-naked
-
Yes! Everlong is also one of the greatest songs ever.
Are you embarrased by the fact that you like Johnny Cash's version of Hurt? Johnny Cash was one of the best we had- especially the last three/four albums he did. I also like his cover of DM's Personal Jesus. (and I also like DM)
-
@Pikka
Not embaressed I just guess I wanted to give te orginal artist credit first. In fact I think Johhny Cash's version is far more emotional and the video is amazing.
-
I almost forgot....ORION by Metallica....
I love instrumentals.... :)
-
Heroes and Villains by the Beach Boys
-

Bam! Its way too hard to say whats my favourite song. I dont have a favourite song. I have 220 favourite songs.
-
No Leaf Clover-Metallica
has been my favorite for a few year now, before that music wasn't in my life enough to choose a favorite.
Evanescence is a really great band and I love their newest hit "My Immortal".
-
I preferred 'Bring me to Life'. 'My Immortal' gets on my proverbial tits, actually...
-
I thought BMTL was bland- My Immortal and Tourniquet, on the other hand.. those are good songs.
-
My Immortal is a beautiful song. One of my favourite songs definitely :)
-

Mine too, it's quite Celine Dion-esque.
-
I prefer the single version of my immortal to the album version, can't beat "Taking Over Me" though
*listening to King Adora - Suffocate at the moment* a fine song.
I have too many songs about being unrequited :(
-
Bring Me To Life was played to death on the radio station I listen to, and MTV.
-
I've got to go with Paul McCartney's "Maybe I'm Amazed", simply because it's the song that was playing the first time my HS g/f and I...ummmm...made use of the "lower horn".
Call me sick and twisted, but I've always liked "Walking on Sunshine"...

I really can't pick a favorite or anything so I will just list a bunch
The Smiths--Heaven Knows I am miserable Now
The Damned---New Rose
Weezer--Only in Dreams
Spring Heeled Jack USA--Jolene
Among millions of others but I figured no one would read beyond my first couple anyway
-
Ahh that reminds me of a few other songs that are truely great.
Weezer- Only in dreams (Good choice Levitate_me)
Everclear- Wonderful (I'm sure alot of people can relate to this song)
Pearl Jam- Betterman (nothing compares to this when you see it live)
Soundgarden- Superunkown
Sublime- What I got (always a good choic to put on)
That's all I can think of for now. One thing I don't get is why peopel rave about Evanesance, I really do not see anything special to their music but there is no accounting for peopels taste I guess.
Now I will return to Coheed and Cambria, who I am starting to realise a preaty damn cool.
-
Has anybody heard the songs by Butterfly Boucher? She's released a couple, which rate among my favourite songs, but no-one else seems to have heard of her...
-
err, no not really.
Moving on :
Can we have a best tune thread because I prefer my instrumentals to actual songs (although I did try).
In which case I have loads of hardcore classics I'm just itching to tell everyone about... :p
-
I have a mate who considers instrumentals to be "songs" as much as vocal tracks...so go ahead. ;)

Second. And besides, Gleno posted a friggin' Metallica instrumental earlier in this thread so nerdlingus essentially has no excuse not to share. :)
-
On classics: I am quite a follower myself (but don't expect me to get technical or anything). Composers I like include Dvorák, Beethoven, Händl, Chopin, Rachmaninov, Bach, Tchaikovsky and a few more.
The greatest piece of classical music ever (and one of my all time favourite "songs" since I heard it in Earthworm Jim) is Beethoven's Mondlicht Sonata- beautiful.
The greatest full piece is Dvorák's Ninth- From the New World.
But spare me of Mozart! Sure, he was a prodigy, but the pieces themselves are really boring. They're composed and laid out in the most perfect fashion, but they don't touch me in any way.
-
Best instrumentals:
Anything by Los Straitjackets
Dead Milkmen - KKSuck2
Reverend Horton Heat - The Prophet Stomp
Mastodon - Elephant Man
Burnt By The Sun - Arrival of Niburu
Primus - Hail Santa(if you can even call this a song)
-
I like the following:
Butterfly Boucher - Gift Wrapped
Bal Sagoth - Reversible
Cardigans - Nil
-
A few favourite classical pieces of mine;
Pachabel - Canon,
Barber - Adagio for Strings,
Pietro Mascagni - Cavalleria Rusticana (from Raging Bull),
J Ungar - The Ashocken Farwell,
Strauss - The Blue Danube,
Ravel - Bolero
-
heh, thanks Jeremy :D

That song was great, a bit like Flight of the Bumblebee (kinda fitting) I had that as a ringtone for ages.
Bach - Air symphony in G String is a great piece of classical music. Also I like to listen to Gustav Holst - the Planets in the car sometimes.

I've yet still to look into all those composers. For the time being, Mahler and Rachmaninov are among my most preferred.
For now I'd say that I like Mahler's first and fifth symphonies best, except maybe the part based on the Death March by Chopin (?)
I got completely turned off of Mozart. I used to like his music when I was seven, but when looking back I see that he was overrated, and that my easily kneadable mind was influenced too much by my asshole 2nd grade teacher who is really into Mozart. (I'm sort of on neutral terms now. He changed jobs and did some directing for a national TV youth programme which I did really like.)
Fav modern composer: Philip Glass. I just listened to the repetitive yet vibrant celebration of life called Floe. Besides some of his music sounds like what I'd hear in a auditory hallucinations when I smoke too much weed.
For all clarity, my taste in music is very diverse. Classical music is just a fraction, and within in every fraction I am very picky.
-
right now my favorite songs would be:
Q and not U - X Polynation
Bjork - Verandi
Cibo Matto - Theme
-
And mine:
Prolyphic - Iron Maiden
RJD2 - Ring Finger
Robust - Pessimist Recipe
Brother Ali - Love on Display
-
Good choices, Coilette. I especially like "Bolero" and "Canon." I had the privilege of arranging "Canon" for my trombone choir.
I've already mentioned my affinity for Bizet's "Farandole," but a few other operatic works that should be mentioned are Carl Orff's "O, Fortuna" from Carmina Burana and "Meditiation" from Massenet's Thias.
-
Under The Bridge by Red Hot Chilli Peppers is one of my favourite songs ever.
-
Australians:
'You're the voice'- John Farnham

*puts on some bad 80s anthem-rock in an attempt to be just like Rachael*
Seriously though, the best piece of music ever is obviously Prokofiev's 'Dance of the Knights' sequence from Romeo & Juliet.
If I'm ever the CEO of a large corporation, I'll have that played through loudspeakers every time I walk down the corridor to the boardroom.

Not the Darth Vader theme?
Or Benny Hill?
-
I'd probably use one of those if I were ever being chased in double-speed through the corridor, as opposed to walking through it...
-
Hmmm, my favourite song seems to change a lot, but at the moment it's probably Idioteque by Radiohead.
-
Today, it's The Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash. The way the lyrics work with the music has a profound effect. I never know whether to be scared or exalted by this song...
-
At the moment my fave song would have to be "Handbags and the gladrags", by Stereophonics.
-
hmmmm, today it would have to be Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, but tommorow, who knows.
-
This list survived a long time as my favorites:
U96 - Das Boot
Faithless - Insomnia
DJ Shadow - High Noon
Dom & Roland - Can't Punish Me
-
I think that the best song ever Man or Astroman? - Um Espectro Sem Escala (A Spectrum of Infinite Scale)
Why? Because it ventures deep into the limits of musical ability, and then it cuts that limit in half in your face.

I prefer Rod Steward's version, or the original from Chris Farlowe. But the song itself is really good.
edit : I changed virsion to version
-
I'm not sure which version of U96's Das Boot I prefer, the first or the 2001 edition?
I'm also slightly confused, was the original Das Boot soundtrack, way back from its initial release, synthasised or done with strings. I've got a version that's synthasised and I was convinced that was the original soundtrack till I saw the film again and it turned out it wasn't - certainly with the director's cut.
Some songs I've liked recently (though some of them are a tiny bit ancient)
Apocalyptica - One (cover of the same One as the Metallica One, which I also quite like, though I disagree with how they sang certain parts of the lyrics)
Enya - Cursum Perficio (found it while searching the auld vinals for Watermark - really reminded me of STALKER - dark, mysterious and oppresive)
James Horner - River Crossing to Stalingrad (From Enemy at the Gates - stiring and inspirational - though at 14 mins long there are bits I prefer to listen to more than others)
Jean Sibelius - Finlandia (in particular one section since adopted to form the Finlandia Hymn and also Be Still My Soul - a Christian hymn. Extremely moving music that always leaves me close to tears)

Klaus Doldinger made several versions for the movie, all were synthasised, in the main theme you can hear the synthesiser.
He made also some versions with strings only, but these were strings from the synth, too.

"Rusty Cage" by soundgarden is everything a rock song should be. I can actually say that about every soundgarden song, but that was the first that came to mind.
-
Mine changes a lot, but right now it's You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC.
-
AC/DC. Great guitar, but I swear that Lead singer is choking on a cat.
-
Well, that's part of the appeal. Likewise, you don't listen to Bob Dylan in spite of his voice, you've got to like it.
-
"Mocking bird gonna fly awaaaaaay!"
Oh yeah. Dylans' voice. *shudders*
Top songwriter, though. :)
-
Track 8 on The White Stripes Elephants album.
Ball and Biscuit.
A damn fine track.
"I maybe your 3rd man girl, but its a fact I'm your 7th son"
sommin along those lines...
-
I love 'Bat out of Hell' by Meatloaf.
My brother has started playing that Gorillaz song recently too, "I'm happy, feelin' sad, got sunshine in a bag" and it's stuck in my head.
-
*puts on some bad 80s anthem-rock in an attempt to be just like Rachael*
Now, that wasn't too hard, was it?
In other news, I do have a normal taste in music when I'm not drunk. At the moment I love 'without you' by The Waifs, because I'm in a happy roots music kinda mood because I'm on holidays. And I'm on a bit of a queen thing again because I saw 'We will rock you' and it was awesome to the max.

It's between 'Undone:The Sweater Song' by Weezer, 'Gigantic' by The Pixies and 'He's Simple,He's Dumb,He's the Pilot' by Grandaddy.
-
Ummmm today it's got to be a showdown between Led Zepplin: Black Dog, James Brown: Sex Machine, Johnny Cash: Hurt, it's probably going to be the latter; such an amazing song, so real and raw, yet full and powerful, that's what you call a voice.......none of this Liberty X crap!!
-
Last night I listened to this cool song from Spinal Tap called The Majesty of Rock. I love that song and it turn out to be one of my fave.
-
Ah, Spinal Tap. I love that song. The video is cool too. It opens with letters flashing on the screen that say R! O! K! C!
-
Well, this week my favorite song is House of the Rising Sun by the Animals. All thanks to a TV Spot for a miniseries they're going to show at Cinemax.
-
As I finally bothered to find the title of it one of my fav tune/songs would be Carmina Burana: O Fortuna.
Actually, does anyone have a link to a decent recording of this?
-
Pfft, Radetzky's March owns Carmina Burana!!

And don't forget the Gay Barbie Song!
-
"Where is my mind" with Pixies. Pure genious. I saw them live this thursday, and they're still great!
"It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)" with REM for nostalgic reasons, and because I've actually learned all the lyrics by heart.
"Kill your boyfriend" with Candysuck, because they were the coolest band ever.

You know, looking through this thread reminds me of why I don't post in music threads here often. You guys all have the most depressingly bad taste in music. Oh man, I'd better not elaborate on this.
-
Ask anyone, and they'll tell you that they have impeccable preferences in music and that everyone else is a tasteless dork that couldn't tell an oboe from an elbow.
That said..
I can't stop listening to the Scissor Sisters, and Take Your Mama is hardly their best song. Return to Oz and Filthy/Gorgeous are way better.
-
I can't be bothered to see if I've posted here before, so I'm going to now regardless.
If pressed, I'd have to say the best "song" -- meaning music with lyrics -- would probably be "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters. The best piece of music -- no lyrics -- would for me definitely be Mussorgsky's "A Night on Bald Mountain".
Right now, I'm listening to a lot of The Killers, Interpol, Death Cab for Cutie, Jem, Velvet Revolver, Daft Punk, Flaming Lips, Weezer, and Coldplay. "Mr. Brightside" by the Killers rings all too true to me (if I'm interpreting the lyrics right).

I can't stop listening to them either :D I wasn't too keen on them at first, but they've grown on me. I love Filthy/Gorgeous too :)

Everlong is just fucking sweet, no argument there. The Killers I'm liking too, their other song Somebody Told Me, I like just a tad more than Mr Brightside.

I like the sound of "Somebody Told Me" more than "Mr. Brightside", but the main chorus for it (somebody told me/you had a boyfriend/who looked like a girlfriend/that I had in February of last year) is a little ridiculous.
I love the techno stings in it, though -- especially the one at about 1:20 in, right after "it's not confidential/I've got potential". Sweetness. :D
-
I just got a hold of that album, I'll have to give it a listen. Somebody Told Me sounds fabulous. The silly lyrics don't matter.
...in other music news, I'm in love with Belle and Sebastian's Dear Catastrophe Waitress. I'd never listened to them much, now I know I'm going to have to buy/steal/burn everything.
-
The Hives have become my favorite band in the last month, I've been listening to Veni Vidi Vicious and Tyrannosaurus Hives. Also, Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand I've been listening to.
-

Belle and Sebastian make some really awesome, beautiful music. Their album 3...6...9..seconds of light is the best. I recommend it to the max. :)
-
Atmospheric Conditions - Beck
Or possibly...
Heterosexual Man - The Odds
Or maybe....
Tiny Days - Scruffy the Cat
Wait, can you come back to me?
-
Hahah, the silly Killers lyrics are endearing. I heard them, and it was really funky, and I heard the chorus and thought "What the Helen of Troy was that?" It only made me like the song more for its oddness.
-

The Hives are great. Not a musical masterpiece but they're fun and energetic. I first liked Take Me Out, now it just seems too monotonous and repetitive.

The best song ever, well tied for the best:
The Velorium Camper 3: Al the Killer (Coheed and Cambria)
Battery (Metallica)
Pst Lamp, Punk Rock is DEAD!

I like it too -- it's purely infectious -- but I can more easily identify with the themes in "Mr. Brightside" than "Somebody Told Me". I've never run into anyone that supposedly had a boyfriend who looked like my girlfriend of the previous year. ;)
"Who Let You Go" is great, too. And "Jenny". And "Smile Like You Mean It". Hell, the whole album is great.
-

Well, technically, what Lamp listens to is not Punk Rock but Grindcore. Listen to both kinds of music and you will notice that there is a slight difference. Go to a Grindcore live show and have your face beaten in while moshing and the difference becomes bigger.
In related news, I might be able to get my hands on some Spazz records. Let's see how this works out...
-
Spazz has some great song titles, but they have to have the worst vocals I've ever heard. It sounds like a ten year old boy trying to sound real tough and do growl vocals, but his voice hasn't changed yet. You gotta love a band with a song called "Now With 50% More Pants Shitting," though.
Best grind bands: Siege and Discordance Axis and Napalm Death.
A bit more on topic, I've been listening to L.A.M.F. over and over again, and I have to say, this may be the closest thing to perfection rock & roll has ever attained. Not to say it's the best album ever (not to say it's not), it's just that every single note is perfectly organized around the theme of being the quintessence of rock & roll. I mean, people have said this about Sgt. Pepper before, but that's bullshit. Sgt. Pepper is a rambling, half-successful experiment in psychedelia. It's barely a rock & roll album. Johnny Thunders fucking rocks.
-
My best song ever, well for the last week or two it has been U2's Beautiful Day.
Mainly because it cheers me up, espcially when at work, which can only be a good thing.
And I've also been pulling out Radioheads Creep lately as I just find it a cool song.
-
I can't think of two songs that are more different, heh! But they're both good. Though my favourite Radiohead song is still My Iron Lung. I saw an FLCL video to that which blew my miiind.

There's two kinds of punks I've met in my time. There's the street punks who spike and dye their hair, wear demin vests loaded with studs and patches of crappy bands like the Misfits and the Casualties, skintight pants, giant combat boots, studded belts, and look constantly like they haven't showered in a week. I've also seen stupid shit like using those giant back patch things as what appear to be loincloths. Like garbage. Then there are the crust punks who are basically like punk lite, pretty much just the vest. They seem to look normal enough. Their taste in music is a little better too. Most of this is based on what I've seen at shows.

Thats actually a pretty accurate description.

Punk #2, as you call it, would consider themselves "indie". Basically just a watered-down punk -- or one that just ins't completely devoted tot he scene. We gots loads of 'em in Portland.
-
We got loads of column A in Santa Cruz. Lots of them are runaways. Fucking kids. They panhandle constantly and hang out in front of the music store trying desperately to look cool. God I hate them.
-
Yeah, the only punk types I ever see around here are in the deep downtown, either panhandling in front of area landmarks, music-related stores/events, or at MAX stations (MAX is our equivalent of BART).
-
I went to see Flogging Molly at the Catalyst, the local nightclub, and the Casualties opened for them. Now the Casualties are fun to see live, but who the fuck let in all the 16 year old kids? I was really pissed off at the scene in there, especially because the kids didn't leave when the main act took the stage, and I couldn't even stomach being on the floor with them. They weren't even drunk and they were falling on people and jumping around like cokeheads all night. And it didn't help that the bar was closed because of those snot-nosed pukes. Why couldn't their mommies have come and picked them up?
-
I saw Toxic Narcotic and Discharge play back in September(those two bands are actually going to tour again, but that's another story) and when I was there, the show was filled with type A. I accidentally bumped into one of them, apologized, and kept wandering around. This guy must have had an alcohol content twice my age, because a minute later, he was in a circle with his buddies and he basically used my shoulder as an armrest for about 15 seconds. Then when the bands started, the first band to play was this local act called Contempt For Humanity, this guy proceeds to try and start a mosh pit during the first song, which was basically him swaggering around the center of the floor and everyone else clearing out of the way. So of all the people I could have bumped into, I caught the drunkest guy at the show. I mean, I have a few friends who are into this stuff, but even they're not that stupid.
LAN: The thing about Portland is that's home to Defiance. If that band hadn't sprung up, you probably wouldn't be seeing as many punks as you are, but they probably managed to stir up some huge scene. At least it's a band that almost has talent.

Portland actually has a fairly decent standing as an alternative music town, believe it or not. Also, lots of bands seem to like playing the Crystal Ballroom, which is a great venue. The floors were originally designed for competitive ballroom dancing; your feet never get tired or sore throughout a whole show.
Mix all that with Portland's reputation as a city of rebels (Bush Sr. referred to it as "Little Beirut" in the 80's), and you've got a match made in punk-rock heaven.
-
I wish there were good punk scene around here. Florida's just.. all pop and heavy metal and country. Good in doses, I guess, but..
Is it me or would "Walk Idiot Walk" by the Hives make a damn neat Futurama MV?

Hey, don't complain too much. Florida gave us Into The Moat. When I heard A Settling Of Ways, I must have listened to that song about 200 times in a row.
-
I'm glad someone else likes Baby Elephant Walk.
Uhh.. moving on..
Yeah, Lampy, I guess we have that much..!
-
This week, I mostly be listenin' to:
The Ramones - Remember Rock n' Roll Radio, I've just started listening to them and apparently they remind me of the Beach Boys. :hmpf:
Led Zep - Gallows Pole, never heard this one before.
Thank you Audioscrobbler for your top songs list for every artist!
-
This week I have mostly been listening to.
Coheed and Cambria- Second stage turbine engine
Coheed and Cambria-In keeping secrets of silent Earth 3
Nightwish-Once
These have bought my attention t some very good songs
Nightwish-I wish I had an angle
Coheed and Cambria-Blood red summer
Coheed and Cambria-Everything evil
Coheed and Cambria-Delerium Trigger
Coheed and Cambria-Three evils (Embodied in love and shadow)
-
Coheed and Cambria's lead singer has a really neat voice. I like it almost much as Ringo Shiina's or "That Guy From Modest Mouse" 's.
-
New song by Chevelle, 'Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)'
Chevelle (http://www.chevelleinc.com/)
edit: TOTPD :laff: aww wait, I don't have a dance :(

I will agree he does have an interesting voice. At the moment I am still trying to work out the entire story that the CD's are telling. Teh more I listen the better it gets.
-

Issac Brock, I believe his name is.
I only bring this up because I absolutely can't stand the lead singer's voice of C&C. Personally, I'd rank him as one of the bottom five vocalists that have songs out now. (Include the guys from Good Charolette, Blink 182, Yellowcard, more pop-punk whiners.)
-
I can't decide whether Coheed & Cambria is actually good. The fact that this band is telling a story makes them very interesting, the music is good but nothing ground-breaking.
As for the singer ... I've gotten used to his voice, but I can't really say that I like it that much. It's okay once you're used to it, but it's definitely not the best voice out there. Sometimes it's meta-annoying.
-
I'll admit that Cludio's voice grated with me to start with but I am starting to like it. it is the same with Davey Havock (AFI) I use to think his singing voice was terrible but the more i listened I began to think it was a great voice.
A mate of mine bought the C&C comic and I think it is quite impressive. Not the art but the sheer scale of tis concept. It is very cool.
-
Another one of my all time favourite songs is Coma by Pendulum
Also Blood and Gasoline by Virgin Steele
-
*The More Than One Year Bump*
Best song ever...
Either Imagine by John Lennon or Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. The two songs that never get old to me. The real question to myself is which is better.
-
My tie songs are Rock And Roll by Zeppelin or Any Way You Want It by Journey. :hmpf:
Imagine isn't that great. :hmpf:
I know it won best single or whatever, but that just means more chumps heard it and didn't hear MY favourite ones. :p
-
I never posted in this thread. How utterly bizarre. I can only assume it is because I didn't feel it possible to quantify a list of greatest songs ever. Even so...

Agreed, in my top list.
Also Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (about war)
Iron Maiden - Aces High/Afraid to Shoot Strangers (also about war)
NIN - Hurt (and the Johnny Cash cover, about cocaine abuse or self harm)
Clannad - Theme From Harry's Game (used in a Thriller of the same name about the IRA)
Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays (also Tori Amos cover, about a school shooting)
The answer is, make a song about suicide or war and I'll probably like it.
-
Ya, Imagine is overrated.
My current best song ever is We Didn't Start the Fire. So very bad.
-
Hahaha, awesome to the max.
Personally, I love Javert's theme from Les Mis- but the The Confrontation rocks out.
My love of music is so diverse!
My duties to the law... you have no rights! Come with me 24601...
-
impossible to pick one, so i got a couple
express yourself-NWA
daydream believer- the monkeuys
the trooper- iron maiden
Beast of Burden- the rolling stones
Sunshine of your love-Cream
Cum on feel the noise (its really spelled like that)- Quiet riot
wont find it here- Black Label Society
tomorrows dream- black sabbath\
alirght, more than a couple
-
yeah, cum on feel the noise is really awesome.
atm my fav is
the killers - all the things that i have done
and it has been since the album came out.
My love of music is so diverse!
same here, i like pretty much everything expet deathmetal ie cradle to the grave, those sort of uber hardcore bands.
just dled delerium - silence. Now i remember what song it is! i don't know how i could forget, it is awesome to-the-max.
-
It's spelled "Noize" for the Quite Riot song title.
Hmmm...I'm going to rethink those songs that I said were the best ever that I posted earlier and change them later.
-
disregard any song i've said previously as well as all the others mentioned:
it's Tori Amos- Honey.
naturally.

same here, my theory is if i can understand the words, i will like it. i dont like screamo, or death metal. thats it. i like blues, rap, rock, r & b, country, metal, 80's metal, punk
-
i don't understand why people like screaming style music. i once decided to be op[en minded and let some of my friends who like that music sned some of it to me. i listened to avenged sevonfold, slipknot, cradle to the grave, some manson etc. it all sounded exactly the same, all it does is make a cry for attention.
-
The first time I heard Cum on Feel the Noize was in Marching Band when we were given the score. No kidding... What a way to be introduced to a song...
So I had to download the original mp3 to get the real idea of it - and hahaha now I kinda like it :p
Best song ever? Hmmm I'll have to think about it. The last time I answered it was Boom! Shake the Room! by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince of BellAir. :laff:
-
they ususally like it because it makes them seem cool and dark or scary or hardcore or whatever. I guess it can be fun to headbang or dance to, or is a good way to let your anger out.
I believe there are a few actually talented bands like this out there (read: Opeth), but they're rare and shrouded in the vastness of shitty ones. I doubt most of these people listen to it for the talent, though.
-

i usally like bands based on talent. i dont really liston to avenged 7 fold, but i think that their guitarest is talented, so thats why i like them. the song bat country is not screamo. slipknot sux.
-
I hate Screamo (Scr-Emo? Scream-o?)... to me, they do all sound the same. And I like to think I listen to a variety of styles. I just cannot bring myself to sit down and listen to a whole album of that growly screamy stuff.
A band really has to be able to hold a melody at some stage in my books...
Edit again: Nevermind, read that wrong...
-
i'm going to ..er.."aqquire" some opeth now, give it a test.
while i do hate screaming music i have to admit marylin manson does have some absoulute rippers, like his version of "sweet dreams" by the eurythmics is just awesome, or his score for the first resident evil movie. they are both really good.
-
Don't get me started on emo and screamo.
-
*pulls cord on weiners back* off you go!
listened to some of opeth, they have really good music, they just need to cut the lead singer and be an instrumental band...
-
check out Damnation. No screaming; it's kinda acoustic really. His voice is wonderful on that.
-
hey your right,i just listened to "windowpane" it is awesome. he sounds good in masters apprentices, expcept for the odd bit where it goes uber hardcore
-
windowpane= greeeeat song. i'm not a big fan of the heavier stuff though, only because i can't really stand constant growling/screaming.
-
hill you'll be happy to know i converted a friend from avenged sevenfold to opeth :D
-
All these good things being said about Opeth made me check them out. Then I come in here and asimov has already made the point I was going to. Some awesome melodies there, but death growl vocals in general turn me off.
-
Metallica - Fixxxer
Nice n' laid back, yet heavy and strong, also intelligent. Good tune.
-
Beatles - Rocky Raccoon
-

yeah the growls can get annoying, I'm not a fan of heavy stuff like that myself really.. but his voice is great too.
song update:
Tori Amos- Spark
Jeff Buckley- Hallelujah
or Matthew Good- Near Fantastica

Did I mention Led Zeppelins Lemon Song? It's got everything in it, killer riffs, a sad bluesy bit, Plant screaming his heart out... <3
And I think I mention Journey - Any Way You Want It, but Don't Stop Believing is just as awesome. :D
Or the Baywatch theme?
*breaks into loud song*
"SOME PEOPLE STAND IN THE DARKNESSS!
AFRAID TO STEP INTOOOO THE LIGHT!!..."
Haha.

So I had to download the original mp3 to get the real idea of it - and hahaha now I kinda like it
Did you get the 'Quiet Riot' or the 'Slade' version?
Both have their good points and bad points.
-
I don't have a favorite song.

As for Zeppelin, I'm a fan of:
-Kashmir
-Good Times, Bad Times
-Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
-Dazed and Confused
-The Ocean
-Over the Hills and Far Away
-Thank You
That in addition to the majority of their catalogue... :D

Meh, it's good, but I've heard it too many times...

Melllvar's right, you know. I mean, I can tolerate Kashmir in there, just for the killer riff, but Immigrant Song clearly is their best.
Also, I want to say add two songs by Drive Like Jehu: Luau and Sinews.
These songs show how emo (or do DLJ count as post-hardcore or math?) songs should be: Not whiny but incredibly pissed off, a singer that sounds as if he's on the verge of a mental breakdown, extremely complex, two dischordal guitars battling each other and 10 minutes long. Yeah.

Call yourself a fan? You're not supposed to tire of the good songs.
Four words: "Valhalla I Am Coming!"

I love the Immigrant Song but all I see NOW are the 2 Viking Kitties in the rowboat.
-
There can't be "a" great song
Johnny Cash - The man who couldn't cry
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
The Doors - the end
Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony, second movement

The Lemon Song has the best bass part. It's fun to play.

You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish.

And that's why nobody brings up REO cookies... wagon.
How about Supper's Ready by Genesis? Truly a great psychidelic era album-side song. And the live version from "Seconds Out" is, IMHO the better sounding version.
