Title: Music tastes
Post by: Juliet on 05-07-2003 11:56
I just wanted to know what kind of music do you listen to.

I listen to hip hop and R n B the most and I like a bit of soft rock.

I'm not sure which to vote for because I listen to loads of genres. I mainly listen to Dance and rock/heavy rock. But I also like some pop like All Saints, some hip hop like the Beastie Boys and other stuff too. Hmmm.. I'll go with dance though, because Prodigy takes up a lot of my listening time  :)

Rock.  Although that encompasses punk-rock and heavy-rock.  Should have been one catagory, and included Jazz and Orchestral instead.

Then we're truly eclectic.  ;)

Post by: TheMadCapper on 05-07-2003 14:52
It's a sad day when "classical" isn't a choice.

I chose Other, because I listen to lots of music, but my favorite songs end up being odd things, most of the time. Like video game soundtracks, DJ Sammy's remix of Heaven, the ending theme to Metal Gear Solid (sung in Gaelic, it's beautiful) and Weigh Hey and Up She Rises (AKA What Do We Do With a Drunken Sailor?)

I'm actually a bit of a strange case when it comes to music. Most people I know hate the music style associated with the decade of their birth, but love the music style that immediately followed it. Just to be different, however  ;), I don't like any popular 90's music, but am a big fan of 80's pop and rock (I guess I can blame my father for that  :p).

I also love some of the Rock from the 80s n some of the pop too for that matter though I stopped liking pop when the 90s rolled around n went to just rock.

I like a few bands from almost every genre.

But most of the new, trendy punk rock bands aren't very good.

I guess it depends, but I think it'd be cool to have on option for dance, and another for alternative dance as well       :)

Also, I'm surprised knowones voted for heavy rock yet, I guess some of it's more of an underground thing though       :)

My taste run the whole gamet of options. One day I may be in the mood for some clubby, dance music, another day I'll be in the mood for some good Opera or Classical. I do, though, tend to stay away from rap and country.

@rach: So Pop and Avril Lavigne deserve their own separate categories now then? Or were you just expressing ultra dissatisfaction towards her and her ugly ginger hair?

Actually for once I agree with Ben. Let's just say that I listened to that godawful garage shit, what should I class that as: Dance or Hip Hop, it's the worst elements of both combined with an extra layer of shit. I'd rather go to an Avril Lavigne concert.

Also the MOBO awards are the most backward-moving excuse for a high-profile gangsta shoot out in the world.  :puke:

Incidentally, yesterday I was listening to Studio Brussel (my fave radio station) in the car, and there was this English band, from Brighton (or Bristol or Birmingham, something like along those lines). They had a really weird name.
80's matchbox B-line disaster. I warn you, this is just what I heard on the radio, and might not be the right spelling.

Do any of these names sound familiar to you, nixon?

When 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster came to play in York we were asked to support them.  I couldn't coz I was working.  I've heard a bit of their stuff.  Sounds about right to me.

I listen to many genres really, but out of all those from the list, trance is my most favorite.

The two choices that attracted me the most were dance and trance. But I thought dance would allude to the cheesy techno stuff like Ian Van Dahl and Paul Oakenfold so I chose trance. Really, though. I like lots of electronic music. Trance, euro, jungle, goa, D&B, German hardcore, gabber, house, etc etc.

I'm also partial to the old-skool and underground hip-hop stuff like Beastie Boys, Jurassic 5 and Hieroglyphics.

Uh yeah, baby,  we have something in common    :D
But you miss your chance by mentioning Avril Lavigne…   :p

@Spiff, right now I'm going to buy some new music. Just wanted to ask about Guano Apes. I didn't here any of theirs. Are they something like System of a Down?
You see, I'm quite uneducated in alternative/progressive rock   :). What can you suggest me?

PS: And, yes, I think said it thousands times before:
I like most: Metal. From good old Heavy Metal (which is not really heavy) to Death and Black Metal. Also Gothic and some Folk…
But I listen to a wide variety.
Title: Re: Music tastes
Post by: Zed 85 on 05-10-2003 14:57
I like listening to practically anything that I feel has a good tune (and I mean anything)

I don't usually like much Dance songs, but if they put some String melodies to good use then usually it catches me. PPK is probably my favourite Dance...duo I guess I could call them.

Other music I like could be movie soundtrack, game soundtrack, classical, modern, "futuristic"(New Age usually) Rap (in some cases) Rock, Pop (in somecases) R&B (in some cases, I actually prefer the old meaning of Rythem and Blues), Choiral...oh anything.
Title: Re: Music tastes
Post by: evan on 05-11-2003 00:10
I first heard of the Guano Apes when I was in Budapest in '99. The kid who I was staying with at the homestay was a really big fan of theirs. In fact, the week after I left, he went to some big outdoor concert that they headlined.

I wouldn't call them System of a Down-ish, because I hate to relate a band's sound to another bands. They are hard rock, but with a female vocalist. If anything, it's very skate-friendly punk rock. Don't take this as a bad thing, but it does sound like an extreme sports commerical. But in a good sense.

Go for "Lord of the Boards" or anything else off of "Proud Like a God." THat's what Adam (the homestay kid) listened to a lot, so that's what I know.

Title: Re: Music tastes
Post by: ZombieJesus on 05-12-2003 13:04
I cannot limit myself to one genre.

I am often looking for extremes: the hardest, the fastest, the weirdest, the most relaxing, etc.

The hardest music I got in my collection:
Ec8oR, Atari Teenage Riot and Alec Empire (all three from Digital Hardcore Recordings), Napalm Death.
I admire Aphex Twin for his versatility. He makes the most chilling ambient, as well as sparky and jumpy electro. Some of his pieces are extremely monotonous, where his more recent work never stays the same for even a second.

Music in my collection with meaningful criticising and often cynical and sarcastic lyrics: Dead Kennedys.

I listen to classical music from time to time. I am very selective though. I don't like Mozart or Beethoven.
Mahler is my favourite so far, but there are so many things I 've heard only very little of, like Berlioz.

When I am in the car, I always switch back and forth between Studio Brussel and Klara. Studio Brussels is modern and in the late/early hours they play rather unknown and alternative things. Klara is a cultural/classical radio station. Sometimes they play ethnic and jazz.

Tunneling yourself into such a small bracket as presented in this list, will not allow you to experiance the wide varity of music out there. (you do not need good speeling or grammer to have good musical taste.)
Let's see I genrally liek to listen to
Heavy metal (Iron maiden ect)
epic metal (Kamelot)
J-pop(Ai Orikusa ect)
Sound tracks
rock (Everclear)
Punk in general (AFI, Less than jake ect)
Rap (Beastie boys)
Soul (BArry White)
Cheese metal (bow to the might that is \m/Stan Bush\m/)

So I like to think I'm not boxing myself in. So I choose other.

I also like some hip hop- Ja Rule, Lumidee, J. Lo. Actually, I like whatever sounds good.  I could hate. say orchestras in general, but if it's s good song, I'll like it.  So whatever catches my ears I like. But mostly rock.

Other bands that day: Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Sick Of It All, Murderdolls, Pro-Pain...

Then I feel sorry for you. If you even didn’t hear of In Extremo, Lacrimosa, Finisterra, Blind Guardian, Guano Apes at last. Then you are really a poor kind. I suppose your music tastes are basically formed by MTV.

True.  However, two of the remaining members of Queen have been guilty of "dead horse flogging" and befouling the memory of one of the greatest frontmen in the history of music, with the amount of crappy cover-versions and abominable west-end plays they put their names to.

They should either:

1) Go away forever.
2) Recruit prodigious new frontman with amazing voice, and go on tour.

For the fans, go and buy the Queen Live At Wembley 1986 DVD, and remember them that way.

The Three golden rules Music tastes
a) Have to play real music, none of that synthisised/keyboard crap
Is it just me or is the term 'Music' Becoming more and more loose?
b) Non-faggy bands are just as important to satisfy as the first rule. Eg. Creed, Gob, The Ataris Too many others to name.
So, there goes half of the punk bands
c) Good vocals... this is a really flimsy rule for me... Yellers i sometimes dont mind, i like Damaged (Damn i wish i could drum like that guy!), The Used, Spineshank and many others, but Slipknot and many others like them don't work for me

In short
A) Have to play real music
B) Can't be a band full of fags
C) Good Vocals

Fave bands include Grinspoon, Foo fighters and too many more to mention
EDIT : BTW i chose 'Rock'  :D

Metal rules.  I played in a metal band back in the day.  Gleno, I remember you posting about Dimmu Borgir in the favorite song thread, I find death metal/black metal (or whatever the hell you call that) to be nothing more than comical, unfortunately.  We used to get a lot of laughs out of covering just Manowar tunes, let alone Dimmu Borgir.

"Hogg hodet av hver kristen
og voldta deres kvinner og barn"

A lot of PEELers are gonna understand that, and it's just sensationalism.  I can't imagine it's serious.

But I'm into punk lately.  GG Allin, Choking Victim, Agnostic Front, Casualties.  Maybe I think they're funny too.  GG Allin is, if anything, more sensationalist than Dimmu Borgir.

And yes, you're contractually obligated to dance when you get a post at the top of the page.

I like softer metal, like Metallica, Adema, etc. I like the music of heavy metal most of the time just usually i don't like the singing. I also like more meaningful songs. Also I'ma fairly new metal and screaming rock fan, I just got into it. I used to hate LP but now I love them.

Cute. And to think that some Americans think Eminem's lyrics are too explicit.   ;)

This reminds of the group Red Warszawa which has made such memorable songs as "Santa's suicide note", "Hurrah the school's on fire", "I hate all people", "The EPO Song" and their wonderful song about shopping at German discount stores, "Aldi". Truly juvenile and funny stuff.   :D

Post by: canned eggs on 08-21-2003 19:42
Yeah, I don't think it's really meant in earnest.  Some of the punk bands I mentioned have lyrics like "I kill everything I fuck," or "Let's go kill us a cop."  It's so over the top that you can't really believe it.  Well, maybe you can from GG Allin, but I knew one of the guys from the other band vaguely back in the day, and I don't believe he ever killed a cop.  It's more likely he got beat up every day in high school and reinvented himself as a crackhead criminal to forget about it.
Same with death metal bands like Dimmu Borgir.  they all probably play Warcraft 20 hours a day and spent their formative years eating their lunches alone in the art teacher's office.  Which is not an indictment of their character, I still like them, I'm just saying they're overrated as a threat to civilisation.

I love metal. Turn on some SpineShank and im happier than a green snake in a sugarcane field.I recently got to see them in concert and they kicked ass. Other good bands:
Smashing Pumpkins, Pantera, Machine Head, Earth Crisis, Pissing Razors, Tool, and War In America.

Oldies also kicks ass. I love so many of the British Invasion bands. The Kinks, the Who, Pink Floyd, the Doors... I could go on.

yeah. people often have a fit because of lyrics that clearly are not meant in a serious way. a great example is a punk band from germany called "die kassierer" (the cashiers).
their songs have titles like "ich töte meinen nachbarn und verprügel seine leiche" (i'll kill my neighbour and beat up his corpse), "ich onaniere in den kopflosen rumpf von uwe seeler" (i'm masturbating in the headless body of uwe seeler*) *=famous german soccer player or "rudelfick im altersheim" (gang bang in the nursing home).
they have songs about killing people in pretty cruel and weird ways, having sex with 15 year old girls, infected dicks and so on.
at first, this sounds rather mean. but the lyrics are so stupid (on purpose, btw) and so obviously over the top it's just hilarious.
and yet, every time they release a new record, people try to abolish it.

I hereby demand that the term fags be banished forever, or at least never refered to when putting down bands lest the argument lose any credibility it once had. I'm looking at YOU Rage Dump.

@Spiff: I like it. We have a guy at work a bit like that. He never shuts up about wanking, blowing people etc. yet he is so obviously over the top that it is clear he is just joking. However if you didn't know himf rom Adam you'd think he was a sick fuck who needed serious mental help.

i can understand that all too well.
i can easilly listen to metal (as long as nobody's growling), but it's not my favorite genre. it just gets boring after a while.
and i'm sick of this megalomaniac song writing some metal bands have. just think of blind guardian. their songs sound as if they had about 12 guitars, two full orchestras and whatnot - and yet, there're still only one or two melodies being played at the same time in the song.
if you want that kind of song writing, make it sound good and make it sound complex. i want music that fucks with my head.

The Prodigy for example were a Hardcore group from the early nineties and as far as I'm concerned there last two albums were Hardcore, albeit upgraded with modern sounds and samples but his roots are still there(even though Liam says he hated Hardcore, I think) as he sampled The Horn Track for use on his tune Climbatize(sp).

I also agree with the Dance/Trance options (but who cares, this thread is old, right?)
It should either be just Dance or there should be a selection of the main dance sub-genres. The same goes for Rock too.

I chose Dance but I listen to quite alot, from oldies to the latest Techno sounds!

Nerdlingus, you need to get out more.  Maybe quit popping e and frugging with a bunch of 14 year olds for a couple days.

Hardcore is the genre that emerged from the confluence of punk and thrash metal in the early '80s.  Think Minor Threat and Black Flag.  It's diversified a lot now, and the scene ranges from straightedge to emo to power violence and grind, but it's all just punk with metal drumming.

Rush is a Canadian prog rock and glitter rock band started in the early '70s.  It's Geddy Lee and Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson.  They're kind of nerdy.

And how many threads do we have for music tastes?  Can't we pick one and stick with it?

Err, not really, no.
Happy Hardcore (for the 14yr olds) broke off from Hardcore around 1994.
Hardcore gave birth to two genres, Drum and Bass and Happy Hardcore the latter being complete arse.
The Breakbeat Hardcore I listen to is from around the years 1990-1993. There is still quite an underground following, especially on the net which is how I got hold of most my records.
Actually alot of the raves where this "Hardcore" I listen to was played were held by Fantazia etc.. and they were in the papers quite alot back in the day and was pretty much the reason why the government passed the criminal justice bill.
Hardcore you know the score!

Tiger Army are vaginas. It's just AFI with an upright bass(they even have the same damn drummer). Nekromantix rules all in that world. I'm also a fan of Reverend Horton Heat, the Quakes, Three Bad Jacks, The Cramps, etc.

Actually its AFI's old bass player that is in Tiger Army. Tiger Army's drummer is Fred Hell, and is a nice guy but not a former AFI member.

I personally like Ska, Punk(mostly 70's 80's but some current), Psychobilly, Orginal Garage Rock(ex. The Sonics), Singer Songwriter, Underground Hip Hop, Hardcore, Indie Rock, Reggae(60's, 70's and 80;s),  Power Pop(ex. Weezer), orginal emo(thus the 80's school, Samiam, Fugazi, Rites of Spring), Oh and I also really like The World Inferno Friendship Society but they defy genres.

Combine punk and rockabilly and you've got yourself psychobilly. Take songs at a punk beat, the fine slap tones of an upright bass, and crazy guitar lines(straight out of rockabilly land) and you've got the genre.

I like industrial, synthpop, 80s new wave (Depeche Mode, New Order, no freaking Tony Basil or Missing Persons), some goth rock (Fields of the Nephilim, The Sisters of Mercy, esp. their early bad synth stuff), some unclassifiable mope-out music like Leonard Cohen. I'm going thorugh a serious Smiths/Morrissey obsession right now. It's kind of funny because every angsty teenager I ever hung out with was a Morrissey worshipper and I never really got into him until now. It's like I'm 10 years too late to indulge my displaced teen angst, but I was too busy being an angry teenage dirtbag back then.
I also like a smattering of other stuff: The Damned, Adam Ant, string quartet music, Peaches, The Doors, Rasputina, Voltaire...geeky junk like that.

The Cure used to be my true love, but I found that listening to them inspired me to write too much bad poetry. Now I just listen to The Smiths and write stories about hott angstaholics. Someitmes I still listen to the Cure, if I'm in the right mood.
I forgot to mention how much I love Siouxsie and the Banshees /the Creatures too. That lady knows how to be creepy hott.
And I did get to see Bauhaus for the reunion tour a few years ago. Daniel Ash still rocks.

Most people I've met have never heard of them, but it's good Doors-style semi-goth rock.

I just realised how awesome the year 1997 was for music.

6 of my top 10 albums...
Radiohead - OK Computer
Blur - Blur
Elliott Smith - Either/Or
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
The Verve - Urban Hymns

And a few other really good albums...
Echo & The Bunnymen - Evergreen
Oasis - Be Here Now
Travis - Good Feeling
Prodigy - Fat Of The Land

Will we ever see another 1997? 2005 is great so far, but not this great. And what's everyone elses favourite years for music?

My fave year for music is probably 1992...

The Prodigy Experience
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Alice in Chains - Sap
Rage Against the Machine
Extreme - III Sides to Every Story
Megadeth - Coundown to Extinction

Not all of those are fave albums of mine, but it's a lot of awesome stuff...

I agree that 1997 was also a good year. Mainly for...

Prodigy - The Fat of The Land
Radiohead - OK Computer
The Verve - Urban Hymes
Metallica - ReLoad
Deftones - Around the Fur
Mindset
Megadeth - Cryptic Writings

And while we're at it, 2004 was one of the best years for music of late too...

Prodigy - Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned
Fear Factory - Archetype
Lenny Kravtiz - Babtism
Chevelle - This Type of thinking Could Do Us In
Lostprophets - Start Something
Beastie Boys - To The 5 Boroughs
Seal - 1991-2004 Best Of

Korn Guitarist Finds God, Leaves Band

By Jonathan Cohen

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch has parted ways with the hard rock act, citing a recent religious awakening.

Welch broke the news Sunday on Bakersfield, Calif., station KRAB-FM.

"I had it in my heart to come here and explain to you," Welch said. "I'm good friends with Korn. I love those guys, and they love me, and they're very happy for me."

Addressing the aggressive tone of the music he made with Korn, Welch said, "Anger is a good thing, and if kids want to listen to Korn, good, but there's happiness after the anger. I'm going to show it through my actions how much I love my fans."

Welch added that he would be appearing at a local church on Feb. 27, during which time he would "speak (about) how I got to this place in my life, and I'll answer all your questions."

On its official Web site (http://www.korn.com), Korn's remaining members said they respect Welch's wishes and hope "he finds the happiness he is searching for." The group is in the studio working on a new album, due in September, which will be its first since fulfilling its contract with Epic last year.

For now, no replacement for Welch has been named, nor has a new label home for the band.

Wow I didn't see it comming, well not this way anyway! I hated KoRn's last album, but always hoped they'd find their form again. I guess the next album could be quite different, and quite possibly their last with how things are looking...

Led Zeppelin's Knebworth show

That ought to be enough for anyone.

My favourite year for music was 1994, and the reason is one single album:
Jeff Buckley's Grace. The album that has influenced me the most of all albums in the history of everything.

The worst year for music? 1997. The tragic death of Jeff Buckley on may 29th.

I don't really have milestone years besides that, at least not ones that I have noticed. I may have a cluster of favourite albums from one year, but it'd be 100% coincedental.

2001 was a great hip-hop year. Nelly's Country Grammer, Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP, Dr. Dre's 2001.

I'm trying to switch my music tastes. If I was to listen to a different type of music other than rap, I would go for rock. (Sum 41, Simple Plan, Uncle Cracker) Any suggestions for songs?
Title: Re: Music tastes

Sum41 - "We're all to blame", its almost a bit to heavy for me at the start, but its nice once it gets into it.
The Servant - "Cells" - not so much rock, but i like it nonetheless.

Right, I'd be sad too if some guy quit a self-destructive lifestyle and found happiness. Especially if his approach to it was different from mine. In that case I would feel compelled to call him a scared idiot who can't understand the world.

You're a scared joyless idiot who can't understand the world.

for someone who's all like "you guys could bring out my good side, be nice to me" you sure do act like a dick. "Love me! And by the way, a large number of you are retards".

New Audioslave album coming in May, snooner than I thought! I've just listened to the first single "Be Yourself". Very meh affair, it's ok, but way too radio friendly and safe. Where's the aggression, I need more heavy RATM riffs. This album better not suck, or I'll start to worry that everything I was looking foward to musically this year will disappoint. Maxim's new album was disappointing, it's good, but no Hells Kitchen. If this goes the same way then I'll loose faith in music for 2005 and just stick to the cloolsome videogames coming. At least they won't disappoint. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat has already proved that!...

Hooray, great news for all North of America fans!

Michael Catano and Jim McAlpine of North of America have a new band called The Holy Shroud and they've just released their first album, called Ghost Repeaters.

You can listen to one song here: http://www.myspace.com/levelplane (http://www.myspace.com/levelplane)

Let's see this...(from the now closed thread Cap'n linked)

Quote
1. blink 182
2. new found glory
3. good charlotte
4. greenday
5. the offspring
6. sum 41
7. boxcar racer
8. bowling for soup
9. jimmy eat world
10. no doubt

None of those are true punk bands. The only ones of those that is close is Green Day and The Offspring. Blink 182 is in hiatus, NFG sucks, as does Good Charlotte. Sum 41 and Jimmy Eat World are more alternative rock. Boxcar Racer is more emo, if my memory serves me right. And No Doubt is nowhere near punk.

True punk is those said by Cap'n, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, etc. Other bands with punk-ish roots or punk style are Nirvana (Bleach and Incesticide have some partially punk tracks), Green Day, and The Offspring. All of today's "punk bands" aren't anything near punk. I'm sick of people saying they're punk when they're either emo, goth or "Hot Topic" and bands/people saying bands are punk.

The only of those "punk bands" listed by the closed thread I like are Green Day, The Offspring, Sum 41, and Jimmy Eat World. All the others either suck or I don't care about.

Also, I like real punk and partial punk that I listed alot better than today's crappy "punk"...if you haven't noticed yet. Also, emo is "okay and all". Some of it sucks, others are okay/good, and others I don't care about.

Finally, a MuDvAyNe fan! I don't see Metal as a genre; that's a pretty large group. BTW, "Heavy Rock" is properly called "Hard Rock". I'm very particular about music styles.

Oh my...newer rock and metal, older metal (speed, doom, thrash--NOT "TRASH", you friggin Euros!!! SAY IT RIGHT!!!), classic rock, some grunge. I'd say "Heavy Rock" sums it up for me.

Muse is great. They started out as a bit of a Radiohead rip, but their album 'Absolution' from 2003 is awesome (probably my third favourite release of that year after 'Elephant' and 'De-Loused in the Comatorium'. I can't believe you haven't heard of them. I'm sure if someone played you 'Hysteria' or 'Stockholm Syndrome', you'd recognise them.

To answer your question, kind of heavy-but-kind-of-morose, bends-period-radiohead-esque brit rock.

You should definitely check them out. Especially so if it's gonna get you some action..

EDIT: Oh, and their live show is fantastic.

Lousy Ben and his "I actually know stuff" approach to music.

Infact, damn everyone who knows about music.

Stumbling through absolutely blind is the only way to be. At least I can come up with on-the-spot rants about anything I hear and hate without actually having to justify it through use of actual music terms.

Granted, this means I'll often say stuff like "This sucks because there's no melody, the guitar guy has been playing the same sound the entire song and it's boring, and the singer... shouldn't," but then, you know what I'm talking about, right?

Of course, I tend to get chewed out by musos, but hey, penalties of the life.

...

I'll check them out, then. Muse, that is. I haven't come up enough reasons to hate Radiohead-ish music, yet.

EDIT: Just listened to Apocalypse Please. If it was a dairy product, it'd be "I can't believe it's not Radio Head!" Seriously. Perhaps a little more electronic...

I finally discovered Muse last year and think they're fantastic  :) They're probably the most rock-ish of bands I like ...

I've heard Muse described as an operatic Radiohead. Which is pretty close to right. Bliss is a top song. I'm quite fond of their first album, Showbiz, Absolution was alright though.

I had tickets to see them last year, but couldn't go because of swimming.  :(

I voted for other, as I like pop-punk i.e. Green Day but i also like 'inaudiable' music such as Slipknot and in-betweens i.e. My Chemical Romance. However I wouldn't vote for rock/punk rock because that puts me in the softer, more easy-going section with Mr. Good Charlotte and (with some idiots) Mrs. Avril Lavigne

Muse are great - I've only got Absolution so far. Kerrang! classifies them as rock, along with Weezer, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, RHCP etc.

My Chemical Romance is emo, or emotional rock. And those last two bands/singers you listed in the first paragraph, I hate. They say they're punk, but when a real punk comes up, they'd run away like sissies.

Muse is pretty good. I haven't heard much of their music, though.

I thought:

a)Emo was short for emotional hardcore
b)That it applied more to Taking Back Sunday i.e. slightly quieter, less distorted guitars
c)My Chemical Romance were Post-Hardcore, as very few of their songs are what would be classified as emo (only example I'm sure of is 'I'm Not OK), they have very Hardcore, almost Metal songs ('Thank You For The Venom') and an experimental edge (intro to 'Hang 'Em High')

The point of my previous message was, although Good Charlotte aren't Pop-Punk Rock any more (as they were in TY&TH) and Avril Lavigne was never Pop-Punk Rock, idiots such as almost all labels and commercial radio stations would classify them as as that.

That was a long, serious post. My fingers ache.

Bah, classical music is not even avaiable. To think I have to vote for the same alternative as those, uh, other people. Yeah. Scandal I say! We need more Piano-music.
Title: Re: Music tastes

No, emo is emotional rock. There is no such thing as emotional hardcore, as those are two contradicting sections of rock.

Post-Hardcore? Hardcore is from the 70s and 80s during the punk area, and again with some grunge bands putting out punk/hardcore songs and albums. And let me tell you, I have the album "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge", so I know some of the stuff that they do.

Finally, emo cannot mean emotional hardcore if it applies to bands that have a more softer tone as Taking Back Sunday does, since hardcore is a more punk style. Taking Back Sunday is emo because emo means emotional rock.

I don't mean these things in any offensive way or in anyway that says that "I'm right, you're wrong."

And where's hard rock or alternative rock or grunge up there on that poll? Like the PEELer I said, it's a scandal!

Emo originally was emotional hardcore, but the semantics have drifted with musical fashion.  listen to Rites of Spring, for whom the term was coined, or Kurt; they're fast mid-period hardcore bands with the emo trademark annoying sort of wail-y vocals, and crappy lyrics about emotional problems.  A lot of non-emo speedy-screamy hardcore bands from the '90s got called emo because of this.  Orchid!, Shikari, etc.  The whiny pop shit didn't appear till later.  The mainstream music that gets called emo is nothing like this early stuff, and is certainly not hardcore, as Dr. Weiner pointed out.

I stopped trying to define 'emo music' long ago.. it seems like any remotely depressive song/ band will get shoved into the emo fold- it's a culture that defines it's own music, rather than a hard-set genre.

Muse are my favourite band. Having been to the last night of their tour last December, I can confirm that their live act is fucking incredible, both in terms of experience and music- I listen to a live version of Bliss from that night more often than the normal version.
The Radiohead connection is there, but I don't think it goes past Showbiz, they have their own sound. 'Orchestral rock' describes it nicely, with guitar riffs mixed in with elaborate piano pieces and choirs etc..

I'd recommend Origin Of Symettry to anyone, it's probably the most normal one they've done. Absolution is probably the better album, but takes much more getting into.

Oh, and their b-sides are great too. Fury and Deadstar are good enough to be main tracks on an album.

Good luck with that musey girl M0le!     Lucky bastard...

some VERY strange music i came across a while ago, and i have only just listened to one of the songs in its entirety is actually pretty cool.

"Providence" - Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

the track is 28 minutes long, but its split into sections, if you can find "Kicking horse on brokenhill" thats the best part. Very hard to classify what type of music it, so lets just say alternative...very VERY alternative.

It's orchestral/noisy/ um... sorta... yeah. They also play guitars with screwdrivers and make weird wobbly noises.

Post by: alexvilagosh on 05-15-2005 00:51
Godspeed You! Black Emperor are pretty cool. Just ask Speli. I prefer Mogwai though... I guess they are not quite as experimental...

I think the genre is post-rock, isn't it?

Sunn 0))), now they make an interesting sound (and that one sound goes for 30 minutes).

I'm listening to the new Audioslave album at the momnt (it comes out next week btw). It's not a complete waste of time, it's hit and miss. The opening track is crap, a total rip-off-riff from Metallica's "Bad Seed". The title track is awesome to the max though! The rest so far is just good, but not very heavy. I'll buy it next week...

Feeling good is a cover of an Eels song.

Anybody like Eels?

I used to listen to nothing but rock, SOAD is still one of my favorite band but last summer I got into more mellow music.  I've been hooked on Eels ever since- have over 150 of there songs.

I'd highly advise at least checking out a few of the following...

Novocaine for the soul, Flyswatter, I like birds, Efils' god, I write the B-sides, Bus Stop boxer, Cancer for the cure, and (the original) feeling good.

In my more mellow phase I've also enjoyed Badly Drawn Boy a lot.

Greatly straying from the mellow... anyone listen to DDT or Dog Fasion Disco?

sorry about the possible negetive association

I bet you when he first started liking you he'd listen to "Jeannie's Diary."  After your first date he'd switch on "pretty Ballerina." And "saturday morning" when you two were going steady... when things started to fall apart he would listen to "Daisies of the Galaxy" (the greatest song/album title of all time).  When you two broke up he listened to "It's a motherfucker" and Four years down the line he might be listening to "I'm gonna stop pretending that I didn't break your heart," or "dirty girl." and at any point in your relationship he could indulge in "Hey man (now you're really living)"  hopeful no "Restraining Order Blues" were in order.

::Swish::

Which album was that anyways?  Someone needs to educate me on the art of a good TOTPD.

Hey Show- you seem to be pretty on the ball with your Eels stuff... But please- Fucker is by far the best breakup song.

Yeah, I've been into Eels since I heard Susan's House back when it came out, and ever since, I've been a faithful buyer of their stuff, and should you be following the materialist thread, you may have noticed my semi-recent influx of Eels loot. I have no idea how many songs I have, but it's darn close to all of them. So yeah... approved.
Title: Re: Music tastes
Post by: Show on 04-30-2006 21:40
Fucker is a great so, i guess I've got a soft spot for songs with piano that have "it's a motherfucker" as it's first line.  I couldn't find the theard that you shared all the eels loot you just got, so I gotta ask, have you heard "I Write the B-Sides"?  I never saw the CD anywhere except this online mp3 site.  it's pretty excellent.  I also have close to all of their songs but there's this one, something like "covers and b-sides" or something, that I haven't been able to find, but I know it exsists because my friend downloaded it off of limewire or something.  Anyways, yeah, they're an excellent band to get into because they have so much material, it's crazy.

Title: Re: Music tastes

I don't love hip-hop, and I'm a white guy, so I can't dance.

I can stand some dancing music and some hip-hop/rap. Pop I can't stand. Heavy metal gets annoying after a while. Some of it's okay, but it aches my head. I like rock, hard rock, punk, and all that jazz...and jazz. Even some classical stuff is good. And music from movies, television, and theatre are in my liking as well.

Really, the only styles I hate are country and emo. All the rest are fine, even polka, but country sounds the same, more so than rap, and emo is...emo.

Never heard of them before. Time to fire up Soulseek.

I have some other doom/drone shit on my computer like Ocean, Grief, Deadbird, Jesu, etc. It's okay, I guess. At least if the bands are going to play slow, they're going to play extremely slow. But I prefer fast most of the time.

Edit: Holy molar. Never look up "Earth" on Soulseek. You'll get a swarm of locusts and possibly bit by an albatross. Someone might force you to become a Green Beret.

I suggest you simply download their second album, aptly titled "Earth 2". The titles are "Seven Angels", "Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine" and "Like Gold and Faceted". That's roughly 70 minutes of music, that should be enough.
And believe me, they're slow.

Lamp & Spiff: There's this cool sludge band called Dead Meadow that my old drummer just got me into.  They actually sound like a '60s psych-rock band over the top of Noothgrush.
