"20th Century Fox, Fox Broadcasting, The Curiosity Company..."

"Fox TV and the Curiosity Company retain all rights to Futurama..."

askfox@foxinc.com is one email address that's pretty public... so I wonder how prompt/detailed a reply would be. Try going to http://www.gotfuturama.com/cancelled/  for more contact addresses, or try the fox website. I couldn't find a Curiosity Company email address right off the bat, sorry!

You've probably heard this before, but it's worth saying again - Fox doesn't like fansites, and it HATES the idea of people using its copyrighted material; if you ask them straight out 'could I use some Futurama images?' they'll almost certainly say "No!", even if it is a school project.

The one way around that _might_ be to use 'promo' pics of Futurama that Fox puts out; these are designed to advertise the show, after all, and might be regarded as being in the 'public domain' i.e. not requiring explicit permission for you to use them as long as you say they're the property of Fox and the Curiosity Company... but that's a bit dodgy...

If you go to http://leela.com.ar/miscpics/index.shtml  you'll see about 2 dozen such promotional pics, under the heading "Futurama Promotionals", funnily enough!

I hope this helps get you started. Good luck with the project!

Marcus.

If you get anything but an automated email respons consider yourself the luckiest guy on Earth. They hate Futurama mail.

I think the Curiosity Company have them as well.

If you find out let me know.

Seriously, why don't you search the fanart forum for "how to do scans", and make them yourself?

Hey! i'm new at this..don't be so mean!

But what about text and quotes?
If i write the text myself that shouldn't be a prob right?
But quotes?
And this site isn't really gonna be so big, its just a school project and i ain't aiming
for really high grades.

Your own text should be fine, yeah.

Quotes in academic stuff are usually OK. You just have to cite where you got them from. Episode number and production block? Again, most bigger sites - cgef, tlz, fsac - state somewhere or other (try framegrab sections?) which 'production block number' goes with which episode, so you can get them from there.

Look, what is your project?

I mean, none of the websites ask FOX to use Futurama pictures, i'm pretty sure of that. I know The Fry Hole hasn't, and we're still open.

Use the pictures, use the quotes and FOX aren't gonna be any the wiser. TLZ is open after two C&D (basically shut down now) letters and is still going strong.

Ah, and put the basic disclaimer at the bottom of each page (go to any fansite, you can see what you need).

Joking aside Fox would probably sue you for just watching Futurama.

I think the problem's probably with whoever's marking it -

"You must get permission before using copyrighted material"

or something.

I wasn't trying to be mean. I'm sorry if it came across as such.

But, as aslate noted, I don't think any of the bigger sites asked FOX for permission to use the characters, quotes, etc. The only result you will get from a request to use Futurama characters is a definete no, and a watchfull eye from FOX.

If you really want to have written permission from FOX, you'll probably have to buy the rights to the show, and last time somebody did that (Cartoon Network) they paid 10 million dollar.

Just use whatever picture or quote you want to use, and place a discalimer at the bottum, telling that your site is not affiliated or endorsed by FOX, Curiosity Company or related organizations.

As example here is what PEEL use:

Ok, thanks
But are you sure the site is going to be legal then?

Thats the last thing i need to know, if it's not going to be legal then i must change my subject for this project.

A disclaimer never makes anything any more legal. You can't say "this is illegal, but I told you so, so it's ok".

If you want to stay legal with your project, go for "Fair Use". Credit your source, tell who holds the rights (legal notice) and don't overdo it with pictures and such. A Fry at the side of your page would probably count as fair use for illustrating your project. You can make it more of that by referring to the picture in your self-written text ("Fry, as seen on the right, is a ..."). You will never know if something is completely legal before a judge told you so, but you can do your best not to see that judge.
