Hey has anyone noticed that Planet Express just got shut down...  That was getting to be a really cool site.  I think they got a C&D letter from Fox   :nono: , that really sucks!

I really liked that site, the VCD covers were cool and it was one of the old sites. They really don't like us fans.

Another site falls to the wrath of Fox.

They could have just said it was a parody.

It's a pity Anders gave up so easily, since another website is still going (not mine), despite at least 2 C&D's to it's name.

Hope Anders brings back the site in another form like he mentioned, it may not be exactly what is was, but it should still be a good one, it (PE) had the uniquest feature going in the Futurama realm, pick your own skin.

I had a good idea, though... he should just put it back up under another URL and a new name!  XD  LoLz.  FOX would never have to know... *g*

What are those C&D letters exactly? And what could be all illegal content?

C&D means "Cease & Desist", and are legal letters mailed by FOX lawyers to shut down fansites (not exclusively a FOX thing, but that's how we know them). The letters ask websites administrators to remove copyrighted material, and doesn't as such ask for the site to be closed. The problem is that by following FOX's interpretation of "copyrighted material" websites will be left with very little, if any, content.

Read more about C&D letters here (includes a C&D letter sent to TLZ).

A little quote from the TLZ C&D:

Quote
Fox tries to support its fans whenever possible.   However, after reviewing
your web site we must request that you remove all audio clips, video clips,
sequentially arranged framegrabs, wallpaper, screensavers, games, desktop
themes, calendars, episode guides and episode transcripts relating to
"Futurama," from your web site as soon as possible.

And this would leave TLZ with what? Fanart and fanfics, and FOX even trying to claim those as copyright infringement too.

What I don't understand is why everyone takes these C&D letters so seriously. Reply with a nice one-word e-mail: "No." Then switch webspace providers. Sending spooky letters is one thing, but do you honestly think they have the time, money, and energy to actually take serious legal action? I really doubt they'd bother with that.
God didn't just send you an e-mail telling you to shut down your site, it was just those losers at FOX. Don't let spooky words scare you. "We will take legal action" is a hollow threat and the new catchphrase among empty suits with too much free time on their hands.

Planet Express is the only site to my knowledge that actually shut due to a C&D letter, The Futurama Merchandise Page got removed off Tripod as far as i'm aware, nothing to do with the webmaster. He's going to get it sorted out i think.

Futurama Chronicles (well on it's way to become for the Futurama webcommunity what SNPP.com is for the Simpsons) was shot down by a FOC C&D letter too.

I'm quite surprised SNPP is still going after all these years. Surely Fox have noticed it by now. How many C&D letters do they have to their name?

I believe they came close to being shut down, back when FOX was going around with it's Website-Targeter set to kill. However, since there is little (or no) actual copyrighted content (i.e. episodes, sounds, etc) FOX would have difficulty prosecuting. Plus the site is very much the hub of The Simpsons community.

I hate to say it, but if episode downloadz are frowned upon, why should scans of comic books be treated any differently?

I fail to see the reasoning in shutting down an entire site because of 4 comics, even if you do for some odd reason respect FOX's claims. They don't deserve shows like Futurama to their name.

I never said I respected FOX's claims.  However if a site's going to include illegal content then it's gonna get shut down.  mArc and the mod squad are careful to squelch talk of downloadz on PEEL because it would probably give FOX an excuse to kill the forum.

Absolutely. What I meant was, why shut down the entire site rather than issue a strong warning saying "remove the comic scans" and then promptly shut down the site if the webmaster doesn't comply? It's not like it was a wAReZ SiTe or something.

Exactly Fred.

If things like downloading frame grabs and downloading episodes are commonly discussed - then this site is as good as dead.

I agree on the episodes thing, but I fail to see how framegrabs can hurt the show. It's not like they reveal any of the jokes, and only overall plotlines can be grasped from them. You (not aimed at you Knux Bender, but used as a general reference) would have to be a poor fan if you would rather see a series of framegrabs, rather than watch the episodes.

Also why are they going after wallpapers (and at one point they included fanart as well), how can it hurt their income that I have a sexy wallpaper of Leela on my PC? If anything it would remind me of the show everytime I start the computer, and porbably would make me buy more merchandise.

I guess FOX just really hates Futurama promotion.   :D
