Because we faired so poorly in the recent Peelies awards I thought I would come back and make everybody aware of another Futurama message board that is still alive and kicking. It is the Futurama Foundation and is fairly active and lively. We have been around for about a year now and have some pretty good members. For a change of pace stop by and join in on the fun.  :)

I said this to every message board thread, so I will say it to this one, too  ;)

You are trying to sell ice cubes to eskimos...
The board lacks a good running site to back it up and reach the critical mass. The board foudners insulted all PEEL members before. The board software is a pain and they don't have a guru like me who can take requests and make things fit as needed  :p

On the good side ... they got blue and they aren't as volatile (at least not the board, their first attempt at a content site was shut down after some people on peel didn't react with "you are my hero, just what I wanted")

Well, I think you are missing the point of the board. We are all in this together - that is the Futurama community. FF is more of an alternative - not better, not worse just different. We have a different set of members who offer their unique perspectives on matters of characters, episodes, merchandise, etc. I post quite a bit over there but even I get bored with the same old theme of conversations and I come over here to see what is going on and participate, however, not as much.
As far as not having a site to back it up I do not think that has been a hinderance at all. It would be nice to have that but it certainly wouldn't preclude us being successfull or not. We have over 200 members and I am always surprised at how new members find us. True that not all 200 are active and we are probably relegated to a good core of 20 or so members who are regular and dedicated.
I also agree with your assesmen of some of the attitudes of the original creators of the website who let their personal feelings get in the way of the bigger picture. I won't apologize for them as it is not my place to speak on their behalf but I do agree with your assesment of their attitudes.
That was part of the reason of posting here again. I was surprised that we did so poorly on your awards considering that we are fairly active and are Futurama dedicated in contrast to the Hip Joint who last I saw has evolved into a Futurama/Simpsons message board. It made it apparent that people didn't know we were out there or still had a bad taste in their mouths from before.

If I post on any other Futurama board or any board not approved by marc he gets his choice of my immortal soul, firstborn son, or $25,000 US. Do I really wanna take that chance? Do I? Punk?

And the customizations on PEEL make it better than any other board I've ever seen. Most everyone else has the standard iB clone with different catagories. PEEL looks fresh and alive.

I'm probably biased, but that part is crucial to me. One can't expect a good catch in a lake one previously poisoned.

Even when I ignore both the feud caused by the board's founders when promoting the board as "the board where people don't jump down your throat like on peel" and the imbecile stink they created here after not everyone fell in love with their content site, to me the board only has one selling point and that's talk on merchandise because its members are basically recruited from another merchandise board AFAIK.

I myself would neither bother to sign up nor give my address and stuff to chronically underfunded ezboard - keen to sign me up for dozens of "product information" newsletters (optionally, but it tells where they are heading) - for talking about one of the 3-monthly releases.

Not that I have any problem with you personally at all, just that board doesn't cut it for me.

I like your site, Bendo  :) It's really intersteing, and nice to chill at. I like it more as a source of information than a message board though.

Maybe so but that has not stopped other members from stopping by and participating. If people cannot get over that it is cool and I can understand it. The only thing I ask of others is that they not be biased by your opinion as well and to decide for themselves.

Like PEEL, most of our discussion centers around talking about the show itself. Futurama fans, as far as my experience goes, are not notorious merchandise junkies like Simpsons fans are. And yes, the board did spring from a Simpsons merchandise board but we have a surprisingly low recruitment rate from them. The better part of our membership has come from other sources and most of them are more show oriented than anything else.

Not sure what you mean by chronically underfunded but let me try and quel some of the rumours surrounding ezboard. Yes, to run an ad free board there is money involved. For FF the money primarily comes from the Admin staff as a service that we provide to our members. Do we ask for money to help support our community? Yes but it is at the members discretion. Nothing is free in this world even when you think it is.

Now, as an option of joining ezboard you can apply to gold status which basically means that you pay your dues and no matter what ezboard community you visit you will not be bothered by pop-up ads. This is more for people who visit many ezboard communities and really wouldn't apply to people just coming to FF since the Admin staff has taken care of the ads already.

I have been a member of ezboard for almost 2 years now and the only emails I recieve from them is when the servers or software is being upgraded. I can't say how many I get from them but that shows how infrequently I recieve them. I would guess about 3-4 a year and like I mentioned before they are to let me know that their are upgrades happening. I have never recieved a product spam from them for as long as I have been a member there. As comparison I get more emails from hotmail at my hotmail account than from ezboard.

As an added incentive for people to try us out we are experiementing with not requiring people to sign up with ezboard in order to post. That means you can come in and without signing up you can post. The only thing we would not allow a visitor or guest to do would be to trade or sell on the board but this is more for everybodies protection than anything else. Not sure how long that will last as there is some control that is lost through it but in the long run if you try us out and like it hopefully it will compel you to join us long term.

That is fine and fair as far as I am concerned. We won't be everybodies cup of tea but then again neither will PEEL. And Otis, not sure what you mean by that as I am not sure if you are talking about ABPoG or FF but thanks either way.  You are the jivinist jiver who ever funkified a jive.  :)

Anyways, the purpose of my original post was to make people aware that we are out there. I did not even know the Hip Joint was still around until I stumbled upon it again about two or three months ago and was a little surprised to see that it is no longer Futurama centered. At this stage of the game we need more Futurama dedicated fan sites out there cause after awhile that is all there will be left of our favorite show.
Peace out y'all!!

Let me clarify on that:
I did not mean to target the admins with this. I just now posted a topic about donations myself.
It's just that I get very suspicious when a company asks me for things like where I come from and a dozen other things for something as simple as signing up. Usually, these "datacapture" methods are used to increase the value the data for later selling. I'm not sure if ez actually does this, but it smells very fishy indeed.

I use PEEL. I registered on other message boards, but found this the best. Better community, posting and offtopic aswell as ontopic. Also, i never kept up with the other message boards as much as PEEL.

Marc, what you said about insults made by the original founders was true, but now those who made those comments have left the board.

We are currently working on a new site (last time we tried we got too ambitious and many of the people who were helping out backed out so we started again). We are now trying to go a completely different way to the one we were before. Before, we were trying too hard to be a big Futurama website, much like CGEF, but now we have decided to try and aim for a site which is unlike CGEF, same with the message board. The new site will try to keep in the same vein as FrCr and SNPP withouthaving mutlimedia or interactive content.

We feel that whilst PEEL does have the larger member basis and is more lively we are an alternative. PEEL is more the NoHomers Club to the SCS in the way it functions. PEEL is about fun discussion and so forth, FFMB is a bit more serious (like SCS) and tries to be informative as the website will be.

We don't want to try and start any rivalry between the boards, we just want to be there as an alternative for those who want it.

If anyone wants to help out with the website, then please email me at ph354@hotmail.com

Well face it, rivalry is not something one can wish away. There is a limited number of people who are willing to talk about Futurama online and they got a limited amount of time on their hands for that. My aim is to have all of them spend all their time on PEEL  ;)

On the site: I hope you are aware of the amount of time it needs to create something like snpp. The multimedia part on CGEF (but for the sounds/quotes) takes the fewest effort as it's mostly automated. Things like the capsules and articles on CGEF are what cost time.
However, if you find usefull information that isn't already available on the net and also are able to keep it running and updated, why not try.
