The last few weeks I've been thinking about setting up a website of my own, but I don't have any idea how to go about it.

Does anybody have useful hints, tips, cautionary tales or stern warnings as to how to get started?

Make sure you come up with a unique angle. Nobody wants to see the same thing on your site that they can see on a million others.

You need a concept, a design, graphics skills, HTML skills, content, and a good chunk of time. I do graphic and web design and I'm lucky in that the clients already know what they want and I make it happen. It's considerably tougher to come up with something from scratch, especially unique content.

After you know what you want to put up and how it's going to look, you need a place to put your site. There's tons of PEEL threads on webhosting, so I'll leave it at that.

The irony of doing a fair chunk of web design as part of my university course is that after I've done all the stuff for assessment, I can't be bothered maintaining a site of my own. A good website is too much work to do if you aren't either getting paid for it or getting marked on it. I've been meaning to redesign my pathetic site from almost two years ago, but as I said, I'm too lazy.

If you want though Fred, I can give you links to a heap of resources on design and especially design usability.

I'll move this to off-topic as it's not Futurama related really.

On topic: If you want any interactivity on your site in contrast to static information, you'll also need to know some scripting language and have a host that supports it.
