Most website builders tend to give broken/bloated code... Try learning HTML and CSS, then being 1337 and coding in notepad. It's satisfying, and you can fine-tune the result yourself. It also makes your website one-of-a-kind.

Some HTML tutorials:

 http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/

 http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/

 http://www.cwru.edu/help/introHTML/toc.html

And CSS:

 http://www.w3schools.com/css/

 http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/css/

...And a wired tutorial with a URL that would stretch the page.

Good luck, and as RS 2thou said, find a unique subject to base your entire site upon, otherwise it's not likely that anyone will visit.

If you're up for learning HTML, go for it, learn it and do a website in notepad. It is satisfying, and highly useful. I did my AS-Level coursework in about a day due to my knowledge of PHP, MySQL, CSS and HTML, all due to creating a certain Futurama website. I've also been paid to create websites for people. Notepad is very powerful!

On the Futurama-website front, try and come up with a niche for your site. Unless you've got time and the team to make competition for CGEF, i wouldn't try and make a general site.

Why does everyone assume a site has to compete with cgef?  I think there's room enough for multiple futurama websites, as long as they look original and unique... if not for information, then just for the pleasure of looking at them.

I think people brand new to websites will try and compete and do too much at once, then give up with a load of broken links and no content.

True.  But you shouldn't concern yourself about the competition.  What you should be thinking about is doing something that you enjoy and making it look as fantastisch as you possibly can.

Personally, I'd just buy Fireworks, but I see you want to save your money, so.... all of the above. Sorry, I don't know much about the "free" ones.
