Eh, a quick few reviews...

Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch: It's a forgettable episode, but that doesn't mean it's not good. It's an odd little tale, but Kif's charm and some nice gags help move it along. Other than that, there's some good use of secondary characters, and nice interplay between Amy and Kif. B+

Leela's Homeworld: What can I say? Brilliant. We'd always needed an episode about Leela's roots, and I couldn't have asked for a better one. The story is well-written, and emotional where it needs to be. Leela's parents are, for the most part, good characters (a bit annoying in latter episodes, but they're fine here). Oh yeah, and the ending has to be one of the sweetest ever. Way too underrated, if you ask me. A+

Love and Rocket: A very nice season four episode. The two stories running concurently worked well, and Sigourney Weaver was certainly an outstanding guest star. There were some terriffic gags (I always liked Leela's "If there was one thing that I learned from my mutual break-up with Sean that was totally mutual..." ), and some sweet moments as well (Fry giving Leela his oxygen in particular). The ending was also very nice, with a very funny Zoidberg narration. All-in-all, one of the best of the season; one that I've always had a soft spot for. A+

Less Than Hero: A great episode if you're into comics and campy '60s superhero shows, and a great one if you're not. The plot was, at its core, a take-off on all the old superhero cliches, as well as the shows and comics. But, this was a farce anyway, so the style of writing is, of course, a bit different than that of a "normal" episode. Funny, and...well, that's about it. A+

More later (or maybe not...)

Why do so many love Season 4? Seasons 2 and 3 were a lot better than Season 4.

Yes, seasons 2 and 3 were better, but season 4 has its own appeal.

Season 4, while it had it's clunkers, was overall a very good season. My main beef with season 2 is that there are too many repetitive storylines (Fry getting a new girlfriend, for example, which made up about a fourth of the season). Sure, it has some greats ("X-Mas Story", "War is the H-Word" ), but overall it's pretty mediocre. Season 3 is actually my favorite season, although I think it has even more clunkers than season 3 (still, it has the great character driven stories like "The Luck of the Fryrish" and great gag-driven ones like "Roswell that Ends Well" ). Season 4 added upon season 3's success, and it had such greats as "Leela's Homeworld", "Jurassic Bark", and "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings" on the emotion front, and "Where No Fan Has Gone Before", and "Less Than Hero" on the humor front. I guess, because I've always been a sucker for a good character-driven episode, seasons 3 and 4 have always been my two favorite seasons, respectively. I mean, the characters gained real depth, making them more sympathetic and relatable, which was problem in seasons 1 and 2.

I think seasons 3 and 4 are the best, because they had better stories, and the characters were more developed. In season 2, Fry was pretty much your average stupid cartoon character. The show really got good when there became relationshipps between characters.

Hey, an excuse to rank the seasons!

Season 1: A nice sort of introduction season (as I believe most first seasons are). We had the character-development episodes ("Space Pilot 3000", and some of "Episode Two: The Series has Landed" and "My Three Suns" ), and the just-for-laughs ones (admittedly, they were more prominent), like "A Big Piece of Garbage" and "Fry and the Slurm Factory". Sure, the characters weren't as developed as they would later become, but they were funny enough to get by. Really, my only season one characterization complaint is on Fry--he was like the Scully-era Homer: for the most part, a jerk.

Season 2: Not that big an improvement on season 1, but it had its moments. There was the top 20 "X-Mas Story" which at least created more character possibilities (it made Fry more accessible and focused on Leela's upbringing and tragic life somewhat as well--in short, all the characters were sympathetic enough), and the rest was basically a bunch of just-for-laughs episodes (which aren't "bad", just mostly predictable). Also, like I said earlier, there were many similar episodes, like the string of "Fry's love interest" eps ("Put Your Head on My Shoulder", "How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back", "The Deep South", "The Cryonic Woman" ). Still, there's no denying that it was a funny season--it just lacks the characters-driven episodes that were all over its successors.

Season 3: My favorite season. It has the right mix of character-driven episodes ("Parsites Lost", "The Luck of the Fryrish", "Time Keeps on Slipping", "Godfellas"--tied with "Jurassic Bark" for my favorite episode) and gag-driven ones ("Roswell that Ends Well", most notably). Also, Fry had finally become a grounded, well-rounded character (he became more sympathetic and more overall likable). Granted, this season probably has the most clunkers of any other ("That's Lobstertainment!", "Where the Buggalo Roam", etc.), but even they aren't half-bad (alot of them are, dare I say, underrated, actually). All in all though, the writers had finally made Futurama the show that I love.

Season 4: It had its clunkers, but overall it was a very good season. The stories focused around the characters more than anything ("Leela's Homeworld", "The Sting", the brilliant "Jurassic Bark" ) and all of those episodes were great (the last is my co-favorite episode, as I mentioned). We also got some very funny episodes ("Where No Fan Has Gone Before"--which I love despite not being a Star Trek fan). There were the underdogs, too ("Bend Her" is beat up on far too much--it's actually quite amusing in my opinion). Really, I think that season 4 is far too underrated, mostly because it has some of the most original storylines ever, in my opinion. It's just that some work better than others ("Where No Fan Has Gone Before" worked better than "300 Big Boys", for example).

So, loosely speaking, my rankings are as follows:

3, 4, 1, 2

I see that next week Target is going to have it for $35.99, which isn't that good of a price.  They had season 2 for $24.99 when it came out last year.  As others have said, Best Buy will probably have it for $29.99, but I should know for sure in a day or so.

Well, Best Buy's online store has it for $32.99, and that'll probably be the in-store price as well.  It's the lowest price I've seen, but it's still more than their original price for season 3.  Another store could still have it for less.

Here's the deal at Best Buy: Season 4 will go for $32.99, the same as their price for season 1.  Seasons 2 and 3 are $40.99 each.  However, if you buy two of those, you'll get $10 off the total.  Buy three and save $30, buy all four and save $40.  So if for some reason you don't have the others already, this might be a good deal for you.  But if you're only looking for season 4, it still might be cheaper somewhere else.

I think $32.99 is as cheap as it'll be for a while.  DVD boxed sets usually run that price when they first come out, and then are jacked up a few bucks.  The only time that wasn't the case was when Best Buy screwed up and offered Simpsons Season 4 for $20.99.

Yeah, and even that was just a glitch at your Best Buy I think.

Yeah, don't expect it to go any cheaper on release.  33 bucks is the best deal we're going to get...and for that matter not exactly a bad deal for 18 episodes.  I officially plan on buying the set there on Tuesday morning.

Personally, the best place to get it would be Best Buy, and to get it on the release date because there's usually a sale, and the sale is usually almost half off the regular price. Simpsons season 4 was $29.99.

If I may be so bold, I declare the string of A titles from Jurassic Bark to The Sting as Futurama's peak. With all of Disc 1 on Volume 3 a close second. I'm looking forward to this set most of all because I only have TFP and TDHAIP on tape, and the rest I haven't seen for a year or more. Plus the commentaries, the deleted scenes, the improved picture and audio quality, the other special features, and the overall easier to use DVD format. Oh my.  :p

I liked the way the sound bits were used on the Volume 3 set. I know humor varies from person to person, but are the bits on Volume 4 funnier? And does each episode (at least in Region 2) have a little introduction from one of the characters like in Volume 3? I know I'll find out in four days, but I must know now so I can avoid disappointment!

Most of the stuff that pre-order from amazon.ca I get the day before the official release date, it's pretty cool.

I'm not going to rank the episodes, it's been nearly a year since I've seen most of them. I'm getting pretty excited about this DVD for that reason, though.

It's a bit weird to ask that now, considering that only in Region 1 did Season 3 have the little quips in the menus.

Therefore, while many people from the other regions may very well have got both of the sets, the lack of menu quips on S3 means that they can't actually make a comparison.   :p

Yeah, I forgot about the lack of menu quips in Region 2-4, stupid question.  :nono: But still, are there the introductions on the episode submenus like before? Just curious.

And don't worry, I personally don't think you non US/Canada people are missing out on much. Except for some of Zapp's one liners, many of the sound bits in the menu are unfunny IMO. The gems include:

Quote
Zapp: (on I Dated a Robot) Now in this episode, I get beaten senseless by a robotic Lucy Lui. Oh, the sweet, sweet, humiliation.

Zapp: (A Leela of Her Own) I prefer to call it, A Leela of My Own. (kissing sound effects)

I think most of the menu quotes were great personally.  The only stuff I wasn't always keen on was Bender's; for some reason some of those weren't very funny.  But the Zapp/Kif and Omicronian discs were great, and the Nibblonian lines were pretty good too.
