They ARE actually released by the seasons. But it is production season (the order in which they were produced), not the seasons that Fox showed them in. In production order, the episodes are made to be viewed in 4 distinct seasons, and hence 4 DVD sets.

The couldn't actually maximise profts that way, at least not by much. 5 DVD sets would equal less episodes pr set, and the pricetage would be considerably lower because of that. Then you have the production cost of the packaging, the artwork, etc. for an extra set. These are pretty much fixed rates, and the extra DVD-disc they'd save on each set would be the least of the expenses. So in the end FOX could end up losing profit if they'd went for 5 sets.

Color me late to the R1 Futurama DVD Season 3 party, started listing to the commentary beginning with Roswell. Going to have to go back and listen to the entire season with the commeentaries on now. Awesome DVD Set.
