For the people that have purchased the Vol 2
of Futurama, I was wondering if you can give me your opinion on weather or not it has a better commentary flow then Vol 1?

This topic should go here    :)

IMHO the commentaries flow a bit more in S2...but buy the DVDs if only for the "Put Your Head On My Shoulders" commentary  :)

Spoiler for "The Devils Hands Are Idle Playthings".  Seriously.  I'm not kidding.  Don't read if you haven't seen, and don't want to be spoiled:

There should be a commentaty where all the voice actors, Matt G. and DXC (David X. Cohen) do a commentary. Although it'll never happen.

Maybe.

Timo, I was very worked up watching TDHAIP because it was the last episode.  I found that knowing did not spoil it at all; I would have been no more affected had it been a surprise.
This fact, that it didn't matter, surprised me: usually I hate knowing.  This time I could forgive anything.  Those of you who knew: was it the same for you?

I, as most other European Futurama-fans, have known for a long tinem and we've even debated it on PEEL. After a few posts it was painfully clear that it would happen in "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings", it just didn't fit anywhere else.

It didn't spoil anything. Mianly because it's not really that big a deal in the episode (I mean the shock-value isn't important to the story or anything), besides you can see it coming when Bender get his horn. So no fuss, I actually like tidbits like that.

And in 3 months I'll have season 4 in my sweaty hands.  :p

Question: Are the commentaries captioned in the later seasons? They aren't in season 1. I figure if you're watching the commentary, the commentary should be captioned, not the show that you can watch normally.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Being hearing impaired sucks.

They're captioned in season 2 and 3.

You can't select it in the menu, but have to use the "subtitle"/"caption" button on your DVD player to toggle between the various captions.

The Neutral Planet (http://www.geocities.com/theneutralplanet/) has some commentary transcripts*.  I don't remember for which episodes.  ISTR that they were annotated with timecodes, which means that it's theoretically possible to rip the S1 DVD, add the subtitle stream, and burn the result.

* I have also seen episode transcripts at:
- Futurama Pagorama (http://nibbler.8m.com/)
- The Low-Bandwidth Futurama Site (http://www1.things.org:8080/~jym/y3k/)
They may have commentary transcripts too.

Thanks for the comment, Teral.

Rub it in, you lucky sod.

I just got my S2 DVD.  Big variation in commentary quality.  Except for a few bright Cohen moments, I thought the one for AOI1 sucked.  On the other hand, WITHW had me in stitches throughout.  I won't have an overall rating until I've heard them all.

Actually, Teral, for the heck of it I was playing around with the subtitle button.  The commentaries on the R1 S2 are not subtitled.

That's weird. They're on the R2 discs. I always play them with subtitles, as it's sometime difficult to understand what people are saying, particular Dimaggio.

I don't have English subtitles of the commentaries on my season 2 DVDs, only German and Spanish. Why it is so, I don't know.
They're OK on the season 3, though.

I can't get to them on my R1 S2 DVDs either. Also, I agree, tremendous difference in quality of commentaries from before "PYHOMS" and after it. Heh heh heh, funny.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who was thinking the same thing!  To me, the first few commentaries were really slow and there wasn't a lot of information.  But starting with Put Your Head on My Shoulders and every commentary thereafter, the pace really picked up!  Also, I was wondering how the commntaries were handed in the foreign languages versions of the Futurama DVD's, like German.  I find it interesting that they're subtitled.

Yeah, I had thought about your situation in R2-land.  I think if I had had it that far ahead of time, it wouldn't have bothered me.  I probably would have even forgotten about it.  And as you say, it isn't that big a deal.

I am just thinking out loud in "what if" mode.  If S2 had been released in the U.S. with only that one episode left to air, I would have been irked.

Thankfully, it wasn't, so I'm not.

I have a question about this actually.  In the commentary for X-Mas Story, David Cohen says that it was being recorded in late 2001, why so long ago?

Because this set was actually released almost a year ago in England, that's why.

I know S4 was... this past spring, and S3 was... last summer? But when was S1 Recorded? 2000?
