Howdy all. I just picked up season 2 on DVD and was wondering if there is any ball-park date or time set for the release of the 3rd season?  :hmpf:

They'll probably hold it off to near the end of this year so they get maximum holiday sales.

Theoretically it should be the end of July.  In reality...

Theoretically. But we're talking Fox here. They'll probably pre-empt a July release and release "Worlds Funniest Tapeworms" or something instead.

considering we had a season 3 episode, in season 5 , we may not be seeing another dvd set for a LONG time.  probably not until the end of the year

I really have no idea how fox will treat season 3, 4 and 5 of the dvd releases.

also, you must keep in mind, they need to gather up all the comentaries and bonus stuff, which im pretty freakin sure hasnt been done yet.

I''m curious as to how they're going to do the commentaries. If the production team have been told to find new jobs (see "sacked" ) then I don't think we'll be seeing as many people participating in the commentaries. There might not even be a commentary for every episode.

at this current time there will only be 4 dvds since there is only 4 production seasons.  and i think the writers and such would probably be paid to come back and do commentaries... simpsons 1 & 2 dvds im sure those writers have moved on to other things but i could be wrong

Hey, you got problems? I don't even have Season 1 here in the US. It's coming, but not soon enough!

I assume we're talking about a US release, as the UK non-satellite is currently waiting for the end of season 3, I Dated A Robot (I know it's not the production finale). Considering it will be a good 9 months til we get season "4", and then we will probably need to see at least as far as Route of All Evil in season "5" so that all production season 3 episodes have been aired, we're probably looking at a good yeah and a half before any announcement of season 3 DVD in the UK. However, FOX might release it when episodes on it are as yet unaired.

Smitty - I agree with your comment about commentaries, but I remember a while back on CGEF -mArc- posted that the "gang" (Groening, Cohen etc...) were actually about the record the season 3 commentaries. And this was after they knew they were not getting any more episodes ordered. Dunno about Season 4 though...

The last part is right. I got told by them that they were working on commentaries and this was after the season 2 discs were gold. So it must've been season 3/4. I don't think they'll hold back the DVDs because of one single episode (route of all evil) in the UK though.

I think Fox keeps a 8-9 month interval for these. At least thats what they do with the Simpson Boxsets.

Good good. -mArc-, any idea whether FOX would wait until terrestrial TV in the UK has had season "4" since that has a lot of production season 3 eps in it?

That's good to know. I knew they had recorded season 1 and 2 together at the end of 2001 but I didn't know when season 3 was being done.

Well, other countries must have got past season 3 by now and they'll probably just release a PAL R2 version anyway. I doubt they'd wait for us to air them.

Also, US release??? They haven't even got S1 DVDs, the set is on the way, but not for a while still.

one quick example of a show being on DVD before UK would be the show 24.  It was on DVD before the first episode aired in the UK (I think), meaning fans could just buy the dvd set or download episodes before the show is finished or aired in UK.

One might wonder if episodes get released on DVD in the US before theyre even aired in UK for futurama.

I predict an August release for the Season 3 DVD's. Btw, according to Sky magazine, Season 5 of Futurama is penned for an April premiere.

Sorry, but you're wrong   :D The final 24th episode of 24 Season 1 aired on BBC 2 on a sunday night. The DVD (and VHS) box set came on sale the very next day. This was I assume engineered by the BBC to get maximum ratings.

If you meant the DVD was released in the US before it aired in the US, then you're probably right

However, Friends is a good example of a show that is released on video before the series has finished on TV. At least in the UK anyway.

How about all those other American shows that get the DVD treatment in Europe, but not here in the US? Ally McBeal, The Family Guy, The West Wing, what's up with that? I don't understand how this kind of stuff can happen?

I think that is why C4 are showing Friends earlier in the year now (they are starting S9 on Friday when they used to start it sometime in April/May).

I think it is something to do with syndication (the same reason as to why Futurama hasn't been released so far in the US). We don't really have syndication in Europe (well, we don't in the UK and I think the rest of Europe doesn't either) so it isn't so much an issue.

If that's true, then "Route of All Evil" should air by the end of May.

I'm sticking by my guess of July 2003 for an S3 release date.  All the S3 episodes will have aired in the UK by then, and a July release would make it 10 months after the S2 release, the same gap as between the first two boxsets.

There might nothing like syndication, but the reason, why can't release DVDs is the same. No Network would pay for a Series that is already available on the market. That's why the US DVDs are going to be released after Cartoon Network has broadcasted the first season.

That's all very well and good, but remember that there is a large number of production season 3 episodes in the airing season 4. I would imagine the season 3 dvd would not be released with so many of the episodes on it still unaired on terrestrial tv. Hope I'm wrong though, cos a July 2003 release would be right after my exams, nice treat for getting through them. Also a 6 week summer holiday to commit them all to memory.

FOX don't care about what's aired on terrestrial TV! Infact, they'd probably prefer to release the DVDs before they are aired, as they can label them with 'Featuring unaired episodes'. They've sold C4 the rights to air Futurama, that's all, so C4 can't do anything to delay the release. And wouldn't FOX rather get the money now?

Plus, doing this sort of thing wouldn't exactly set up a good business relationship for the future.

I'm hoping for a Summer 2003 release, as the Futurama box sets are released soon after their Simpsons Season counterparts, and The Simpsons Season Three is scheduled for May according to FOX (but hey, scheduled means they can pre-empt it! With When DVD Box Sets Miss Their Release Dates!)  ;).

Why is everyone banging on about C4's deal with FOX to air episodes, and how it'll affect the S3 release date?

SKY air new Futurama episodes long before C4, and once "Route of all Evil" airs on SKY, it's aired in the UK.

Yeah, we just don't know if FOX will wait until C4 have aired it first. We just need to wait and see, as this is the first box set to be released soon after (some of)the episodes have been on C4.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Season 2 DVD set come out about a month after 'Cryronic Woman' aired for the first time on C4? That was pretty soon after.

Yeah you're right. That's not the topic of discussion though, as there are lots of season 3 eps in the airing season 4. So they won't be aired on C4 for a while.

Don't know if this has already been posted on CGEF or PEEL but according to the Region 2 DVD project there are some Futurama 3 DVD extras currently submitted with the BBFC. Including audio commentary (huzzzah!)

I saw it on the BBFC, but there wasn't really much to report on .. there were 4 commentaries rated at pg/12... the first commentaries for s2 were submitted a great deal before the DVDs arrived. It gets interesting once the BBCF rates the other extras.
